JULY 9. The Catholics of Paducah are takins Mops to fniaree their church. Tiik Rcpulllain J'ress. of Petersburgh, copies an editorial from the fWtVrof this city, and credits the Journal with it. We beg of the 7Vs not to do that tiling again. Our reputation is dear to us. The rapidity with which the Republican State Administration is paying off our Stattf debt is attracting ou.-ulerable attention East, and made the subject of complimentary notices. It is very different from the Perooeiatic policy ot increasing the debt, which was the custom prior to the time the republican party took charge ot the State. Indiana does not owe one-eighth ns mueh as she did five years ago, notwithstanding the enormous "expenses which she incurred during the war. ' Five yeaT3 ago our debt was 000,000 ; now it is only 1, (C0, Hti. This fact is sufficient to gag all the noisy Democratic claquers who attempt to humbug the people with charges of Republican extrava fiance. Trip Divisifiv ov Ft.orida. The substance of the articles of agreement .t.rn,l into W tl.A mm missio ners of Florida and Alabama for the transfer of West Florida to Alabama is to the effect that Alabama shall pay one mil liou of dollars for the territory in eiht per cent, bonus, Alabama to assume an I pay the unpaid State tase due by the several counties of West Florida, and the territory annexed to have the same representation in the Alabama Legislature as in the Assera bly of Florida. The agreement will bo submitted to the vote of the peo ple for ratification. There is consid erable opposition to it, New Albany ts. Ine Straight Line. The New Albany Commercial is in spasais'over the probable resurrection of the Straight Line llailroad. It says: "Strong efforts are being pat forth by the Evansville interest oh one hand and the Ohio and Mississip pi Kailroad interest on the other, to prejudice the people of Gibson county aainst the New Albany and St. Louis Railroad; that it is for this purpose that Evansville is now trying to reor ganize that graad swindle and humbug, the 'Straight Line Road, and that the O. and M. Road has put in motion the projected road from Shoals, .Martin county, to Rockport Spencer county a road that would havcto penetrate the most hilly and non productive portion of Southern . Indiana, and that could not be built for $(10,000 per mile, and if built would never be of any advantage to the people or the country." We copy the language of the Com mercial, because it shows how small an apparition gives the New Albany & St. Louis Railroad enterprise a nervous chill. Kvansville is not try ing to reorganize the Straight Line Railroad. Some eastern capitalists aud shrewd railroad men, we under stand, arc talking of resurrecting the road and putting it in complete run ning order, if the people through whose country it runs, aud who will be greatly benefitted by its comple tion, will contribute a small proportion ol the expense. We understand, furthermore, that these capitalists will not ask the people to pay one dollar on the road until it is finished and the cars are running its entire length. If this information be correct, we dare say the people will respond favorably. Certainly it will b.i wiser in them to do so than to donate thousands upon thousands of dollars to men, fur a paper road, who have little or no money invested in it, themselves, as is the case with the incorporators of the New Albany & St. Louis Railway Company. The people want additional railroads and will have them, but they will act wisely in looking around them before investing their money. If the people on the line of the New Albany & St. Louis Railroad are expected to furnish all "the money that will be spent in its construction, we respectfully suggest they are very foolish in placing their means at the control of a few men in New Albany, whose personal subscriptions amount to a mere bagatelle, compared with what the road? will cost. Evansville, at the present time, is devoting her efforts to other railroad enterprises, and is payiDg very little attention to the Straight Line. If, however, Eastern capitalists coirplete that road, and call ou us for some assistance, we have no doubt our people will respond promptly and, favorably. But the Commercial is wide of the mark in the assertion that "Evansville is trying to reorganize that road." - Allen County Schoul Returns. The Fort Wayne Gazette was very unfortunate in basing its claims for Fort Wayne as the second city in-the State in population, upon the returns made of children for school purposes. Those "Returns " have already been alluded to in our columns, and are, we sec, attracting attention in other localities. The least said about them by the Fort Wayne press, the better, for it is evident to all who have paid attention to statistics that the returns are incorrect, or Fort Wayne is an anomaly as regards population. We see that the attention of the editor of the Richmond Humming Bird has been attracted by the singularity of the Fort Wayne returns. He evidently, . in the language of Hamlet, thinks the: "i s something rotten in Denmark. He says: , "Allen County reports the total

Hut the cast ot the matter turns upon the number" children, and not on the number of inhabitants." The Indianapolis Journal thinks it is evident that torac advantage has been taken by the officers of Allen County, and hopes the Superintend ent of Public Instruction will inquire into the matter. We pecon l the suggestion, and think the Superintendent w'll fail in his duty if be neglects to make the desired investigation. Chops.
