DAILY JOUKNAIj
riBLISHCU BY TUB &VANSVILLK JOUKJAb COMPASY, So. 6 LofOil tret, Evnnaville. THURSDAY... ..JTJ Y8,L69. We copy from the Boston Post an arnusipg account of the first day's operation of the new liquor law in Boston. It seems to have been a very dry day, and the anxiety to wet whistles was'unusually prevalent. The decision ot Secretary BoutWELL to purchase three millions of bonds in addition to the usual half million a week, is hailed with much satisfaction by the business public. Thene bonds will not ro into the Sinking Fund, but into the Treasury to await the action .of Congress. By this operation au equal amount ot currency will bo liberated from the Treury, whereby needed relief will bo given to the business, classes. TnE largest crowd ever assembled in Cincinnati tj witness a game of base ball, was present on Monday to see the ?ame between tho lied Stoikinc of that city and the Olympics of Washington. There were between six and seven thousand people within the incdosure. The day was beautiful and bright, with a good breeze in the valjoy. Dayton and Hamilton were wU represeuted by both sexes. The games was very interesting, ana re sulted iu the Cincinnatis beating their opponents by a core of 32 to 10. in HcNNieur, the Virginia Radical, who onse made speeches in this State, and wtt denounced by the Democratic pupetHuia. the vi. est ot tne vile, nas ieen -reformed, lie now turns up as tho Democratic candidate for Con gress, and the Richmond Whig, which before denounced him without meas ure, supports him with all its might. Another candidate of the Conscrva tives is Gen. Charles P. Stone, of Capital Prison memory, now running for the State Senate. A carpet-bag-per of the most palpable kind, the Democracy of Virginia find no liifiirultv in supporting him. Indiana Democrats ought to take back their f jriucr abuse and welcome these con verts with outstretched arms. The Courier has already urged that policy upon the party as the only way to win. We urge that paper to lead off iu an article glorifying IlrjNNlCCT. The Fort Wayne Gazette says we take exception to the fact that Fort Wayne i: the second city in the State. The Gazette is mistaken. W t too exception to its statement, to the effect that Fort Wayne was the second .city iu the State, because the state mcnt was not the fact a distinction with a difference. We are not sur prised that the Gazette should not - quote us correctly, when its blunders as to the relative populations of the two cities are so palpable. The Gj.::ctte don't like the evidence which we pro ducc, showing the population of the two cities. We don't find fault with it on that account. The evidence to it is of aa unpleasant character, but nevertheless conclusive. As for the importation of voters, double voting and all that, if any city on this conti nent can beat Fort Wayne, in propor tion to population, we have yet to hear of it. Our reading of the Gazette has long since.convinced us that from twenty-live to thirty-three percent, of the votes cast in that city are usually fraudulent. Allen County frauds are as notorious as Alleu County majori ties. It comes with a poor grace from the Gazette, to talk about good ferry communication. What is that to the railroad communications of which it boasts so loudly. We are content to await the next census returns, provided the Gazette don't get the same man to take the census who made the last return of children for (school purposes. lie is an arith Dietician of such expertness that like Captain Scott's coon, we would have to come down the minute we heard of his appointment. So expert is he that the Superintendent of Public Instruction ought to cake his acquaintance Jand ascertain how it is he figures such an enormous number of children out of so small a population. It is a problem in which every city in t4ic State is interested. "llltins their Scalps." The Crown Point Register has been "lil'ticg the scalps" of the county officers of .Lake with the sharpest of knives, cutting into them with the "following sample of charges:" " Laka County pays an amount averas; In? 81,.tuo ter vear for blanks, blank books ami stuiiouery, at rates set forth by tne following fcauiple of charges, taken from bum of Messrs. Don't ua niggardly with your indiauap jiis friends -i- it's county money. If the foregoing figures are true and fair, they. certainly make out a pretty damaging case against nhe officials but we presume the showing mut be taken with some grains ot allowance. We are indeed aware that Messrs. W.&J. Braden, Mr. Wm. Sheets, and other stationery houses in Indianapolis, are in the habit of bestowing many and very obsequious attentions upon tho county officers visiting the Capitol, airing them "round town " in two-horse barouches, and making them small presents of gold Iens, dozens ot pencils, et cetera. And we know there are men (and not bad fellows either) who can be caught with such cheap civilities, and innocent little bribes, but we never had a thoncht that Messrs. M. & J. 13. or M. W. S., had bagged any game in this part of Indiana nor are we yet williDjr to believe it. .Naturally enough the local newspapers are somewhat uneasy and jeal
ous at seeing printing business (" fat takes," too, often) going away from them to Indianapolis and other cities
to men who, (whatever they may pretend) really in the general way care no more for the county (officers included) than they do for the island of Madecacar and its royal family. But we lave never shared largely in this feeling, although the patronage given us has been but a trifle, while our facilities for doing all the work (save the binding) are ample, and the foreman of our Job Office, Capt. V.. Taylor, is just as good a printer as tho best in tho employ of JJSradec, or Wm. bhects. Lapurte Union, U7id lleralJ. The complaints of the Register and Herald are well founded. County of fieers who will send their orders to Indianapob's, or any other point when they can be filled as cheaply at home, in nine cases out of ten are influenced iusome such manner as above tated, or even more directly. Counies ought to patronize those who are aboriug to build up their prosperity v attracting to them population and wealth. We are informed by the Ledger that the New Albany and St. Louis Air Line llailroad has employed lion John M. Wilson, one ot the most clonuent orators or Indiana, to go over the hue ot their proposed road and discuss its advantages to the people. The only way to divert the surplus capital of Gibson County from being investe.f in that road is to push lorward the Straight Line. Lvansville Courier. ' If vou think so you ought to pass through the county and be convinced of your error. The people are enthusiastic upon the subject of an east and west road, and having been swindled once by the Straight Line enterprise (a north and south road) they will be very carelul not to be taken in on it . r.1, - . 1 - ( . . . t auain. lucre is somctniug aooui me New Albany and St. Louts liailroad movement that is plausible and cap tivating, backed by a moral certainty that it will be built. Princeton Cla rion. The idea that the people of Gibson County are more interested in an East and West road than any other, is principally entertained about Princeton. Tho Clarion says the New Albany and St. Louis Koad is " backed by a moral certainty that it will be built." We do not know what it regards as a moral certainty, or how much moral certainties contribute towards constructing railroads. We are very sure it is not backed by a. financial certainty. The people in the northeast part of the county don't altogether endorse the idea. They wouldn't object to another Northern and Southern connection. Every mile ot the extension of the T. LI. & I. 11. 11. to the Illinois line is being worked, and the grade will be ready for the ties and rails 'it the earliest possible date. T. II. "Sot for Joseph" ot for Grfen hicks ilie Deposition or KShg Alcohol In the t lty of Motions The Frantic Appeals or the Thirsty Thronir The Germans lu Clover. From the Bostou Post, July 2. The new Liquor Law went into operation yesterday. It was an event of ho little interest in our city, where the trade is of such great extent. As most of our readers are aware, the Juw is one ot unexampled severity. and, if executed to the letter, would produce a serious effect on the liquor interest. Some will contest the law, believing it to be both unjust and un constitutional, while others, as at hotels and saloons, have closed their hars, and the scenes so common two Vears ago were reproduced. Some places were under lock, and admission was only to be had through the imagie of the key. The proprietors in some cases take the law pleasantly, if not jocosely, and philosophically allege that if they mute stop business, tn;n must is tne word. Thev think it hard, unjust.if not tyrannical. ami will submit with as much grace as is possible under the ntw state of things, determined, if they can no longer follow their chosen business, to improve the next six: months in Swelling nnd directing public opinion $o as to bring about in January next a repeal of the law. Such as believe they .cannot relinquish their only means of support will bide the issue of time and event. ' i ! AT THE STATE CONSTABLE'S. 1 The office of the State Constable, Major Jones, in Bromfield Street, was a scene, yesterday, of great activitjy. Everybody was in an exhileratLng state of buatlo. . The Major himself, in his blue coat, brass buttons, glistening, expectant countenance, was in a fever, if not perspiration of planning, ordering, and doing. His rank and file were waiting, ali eager for the fray. Callers were numerous, 'f Can I see his; Honor the State Constable?" "Where is Major Jones? 'we got a large family; I'm a poor man ; my expenses are dreadful, and want to see if he won't let me quietIV keep on selling liquor." Half a dozen came in on a similar mission. They all ask to have the soft side of the law turned on them. The Major inwardly don't "see it," but at the stone time don't say it. AT TUE PARSER HOUSE. The public bar at the Parker TTmisfl Jas closed. A placard announced, ii.-ji.uuS tu uc uaa over the bar. t was no ose to-call. Thrrp was r o rbsponse. The favorite beverage was njot at all forthcoming. As well call mon the spirits of the deep. "We can give you crackers and cheese spups, pie, stews, coffee, fish, flesh ahd red herring, but nothing 0f a spirituous nature not for greenbacks." Up stairs in the side closet it is lmnossiDie to tell what went on Or Off. f ; AT XH E TRE-UONT.1 : V Squire Pitcher, I'll take a little something with a stick in it." " Will y6u ? Glad to hear it: but our sticks ate all up, or rather down. Couldn't sdll a drop, if the Mayor bad a lively ciiic. . It is July 1, you know, and things are at a period.'" - Regular 'patron leaves, hi countenance a pioture otl mingled disgust, amazement and iiijconiprehensibility. "Can't 1 have my morning cocktail, nor my eleveno'clocker?" says another. Squire Wil-
Hani responds, " No, not for Joseph, or any other man." AT THE AMERICAN HOUSE, The bar-room is at time entirely deserted. A demand for any article
that contains more than dh per cent." is met with a polite but firm refusal. Some smi!d and think it a good joke others don't see the point, and Jament the luck that brought them into tho puritanical city of Bos ton when the prohibitory law happened to be enforced. All have to make the bestof it, however, and in turning to the REVERE HOUSE, The same scene is re-enacted. As in other hotels, the placard "Bar Closed" appears in a prominent position. JJut few guests remain in the bar-room, and as one occasionally steps to the bar and gets a glass of water, the ever ready barkeeper wines the entire counter probably to keep up the appearance of things and to 44 keep his hand in." Last night, in some of the streets, miuht be seen small express wagons laden with barrels and casks, wending their-way to some stronghold, and then, after depositing their burden, return again for another load. WHiT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? " Major Jones, what are you going to do?" asked one -of our reporters yesterday afternoon of the High Constable. ' I am placed here to execute the law. I shall do it. I hope to act with prudence I bear no malice toward any man ok set of men. I am the servant of the public, and shall try and do my duty. I think I know what 1 am about, and shall not forget the place I occupy, nor underestimate the obligations that rest upon me." Do you suppose you can stop liquor drinking in Massachusetts?" "No, I do not, but I shall try and stop the traffic, lhe State House, rppresentmg the settlement ot the Common wealth, has instructed me by statute to do a specific duty how am I to do otherwise than obeyr LAGER WHAT THE TEUTONS SAY. Teutonia does not believe in the new order of things. It does believe m lager. Its faith is but another name for its practice. In fact, the lager business yesterday, was almost unexampled. Not only Germany took lavishly to itsmuir. but Saxon throats rang with the beery beverage. Bologr a, sauer krout. sandwich, cheese and other solids kept merry company with the extracts of malt. The tonic in demand was especially teutonic, but which was not considered a bit too tonic. All demands were answered No lager beer saloon of which we hear displayed the repellant words " Nothing sold over the bar." From Chelsea Ferry to the Highlands, from Camondge , Jiridge to JLong whart, the saloons were graced with an uncommon patronage. Those who never drank higer before now valiantly ordered up, not ' Iponies," but full-sized mugs, while those to whom it was an accustomed beverage, were free and easy in their demands. No such lager day was ever known in Boston. Germany counted its profits with the biggest of figures, and said, Mine Got, it dis is von liciuear law. bv dam, give us dree two. four mere of 'em." And Ger many soothed itself on its pillow with the recollection of much profit, and the hope of little." G li A N D Midsummer Night's AT THE . ARTESIAN SPRINGS PARK, Thursday, July 8th.
