St. this FUBLIHHtD BY THE - KYAXSYlLLX JOUKXA.fi COMPANY, K. 6 Locmt Street; EvitnaTlll. JULY 5. 18ti9. Still Thei Go. On Thursday fifty clerks in the Pension Office were notified that their services were no longer needed. On Saturday one Vinnilred in the Bureau of Internal Revenue expected to be discharged. The Madison Courier claims that to Senator Cravens, of that county, is due all the credit of the discovery that the resignation of one-third the members of the Legislature did not break up the. Legislature. That in President COLFAX and Senator MoUton only discharged the argumentative thunderbolts which had been forged by the little "Vulcan of Jefferson County, aided by Steis, the "able young Senator from Tippecanoe," as striker.- This all 'may be true, but it is evident that the people didn't see it until Senator Morton's speech opened their eyes to the true intent and meaning of the Constitution on the question at issue. If Senators Cravens and Stein know so much, it is a pity that they could not have told it better. We presume there will be no satisfactory solution of the Pacific Railroad problem. 1 The reports concerning the condition of the road are so contradictory that 'an impartial observer can not tell what to believe. First, Mr. Snow gave us a terrible account of the road, setting forth that the people of the United States were most wretchedly swindled by the contractors and that travel over it was positively dangerous. Follow ing this was the statement of sundry correspondents, all asseverating that Mr. Snow's reports were not correct. Next we have Mr. Isaac N. Morris, of Illinois, who was appointed a Com missioner to examine the road, on the stand. Ilis 1 testimony corrobo rates thit of Mr. Snow. He details a number of particulars in which the road is not built according to contract and asserts that portions ot it are positively dangerous to travellers Bat hardly do we rise from the perusal of his statements filled with indignation at the dishon esty of contractors and Congressmen when we are confronted with the let ters of A. D. Richardson, of the New York .Tribune, and Mr. Boyn TON, of the Cincinnati, Gazette, who passed over the entire line at the in vitation, of course, of the officers of the r ..J, and saw nothing but beauties j-nature and excellencies of meel i.iism. " : ' ' So we conclude that the condition of the Pacific Road depends very much upon the way. in. which one looks at it. If regarded from the windows of the Palace Car, with all its luxuries at one's disposal without charge, the road looks all right. But if, on the other hand, a close scrutiny ef the track, the bridges, the cross-ties, and the curves is made, the road presents a more unfavorable appearance. Poor Fellows. :) Our Democratic exchanges are positively disconsolate over the recent argument by, Judge Perkins in favor of the llegality of the legislative proceedings after the Democratic secession. Like Rachael mourning for her children, they will not be comforted. The Courier of this city led off with a dismal wail, and other papers are taking up the melancholy refrain. The following is a sample of what we daily read: A Ore at Error. YV e observe by tne izmte csentmel that Judge Per kins has permitted himself to make an argument before the Supreme Court.as a (airyer, wnicn ne aavised the JJemocrats of the last Legislaturfi 'against as a man I This is wrong. Position, money, reputation, nor anything else should make a Democrat, in these perilous times, give an opinion against the law and the truth, not even as an attorney, who is allowed great latitude. We are proud to observe that Joseph E. McDonald, on toe same case, refused to say that the Legislature of Indiana could do business with less than two-thirds of all the members of each House present. tvansville Courier. We agree with our coterapcrary. We cannot see how prominent Democrats can bring themselves to accept a fee in advocacy of an act which they know and fetl to be clearly and unmistakably wrong, at war with. the spirit ot our State Constitution, partisan and revolutionary. The fact that the arguments are made by them simply as advocates is not sufficient to justify the act. The questions involved are far above those usually encountered in our Courts they are bound to have a mighty influence hereafter upon the politics of the State, for weal or woe and the points which gentlemen have taxed their talent and ingenuity to sustain as advocates may hereafter come back to plague them, when they go before the people in their proper roles, in denunciation of the vile partisan outrages of the last Legislature. Vineennes Sun. So we are to believe that Judge pRKi.N3, who, these same papers have taught the people to believe, is the perfection of judicial purity and integrity a3 of legal ability, has sold out his party by accepting a fee in advocacy of an act be knows and feels to be clearly and unmistakably wrong. If the integrity of the chief men in the Democratic party is such pur chasable stuff, what shall we say of tne lesser lights; such, for instance, as the Vineennes Sun? Can they be trusted? Yet the people are told almost with the same breath that denounces the leading men of the Democratic party as purchasable stock, that their only hope is in that party. We cite this fact and place it on the record for future consumption. We dare say it will plague the Democracy not a little, when the leaders of that party go before the people, in denunciation of the last Legislature.

The line traverses a doui, bixt teen miles ot tbe northeast portion oi Saline County. llarxisburg, Illinois Lttironicle. , - -f ' This is another railroad in wnicn I Evansville i3 greatly interested, and from which she will derive great bene fit by tapping it with the rosd which she designs building in that direction. All the indications demand the im mediate commencement of a road into Southern Illinois,, so. that our merchants may prevent the trade of that section seeking other markets, from which it will be hard' to divert, hereafter. Oar road ought to be completed by the time the other railroads in Southern Illinois are in operation, and it will be if the proper wisdom and energy is displayed by those having charge of its i management. . - - e- . - ANOTHER TERRIBLE CRIME. SliocMrg Murder, Robbery ; and Arsoiv " ' ' ' Cumins of a Depot and Store: ' We have another fearful crime to add to the long black li?t that " displaces Washington County a more horrible affair, in all its details, than any of the many horrible murders that have1 :in the past six or eight years been committed in that county. The crime involves robbery arson and murder. : . : On Wednesday night, about twelve o'clock, the large lrame depot and store building at Farrabee's Station, on the .Louisville, iNew Albany and Chicago Kailway, twenty-seven miles out from this city, was discovered by Mr. Farrabee, who resides near by, to ba on fire. The store contained a valuable stock of goods, and was owned by Messrs. Harrison Welch and William It. Smith, both formerly of New Albany.- Ihe names ppread rapidly after their discovery, and soon the building, with all its contents, was destroyed. ; . ;: i The alarm, by this time, had spread, and a number of citizens had gathered at the scene of conflagration. In searching among the ruins the body of Mr. Smith had been discovered in the area of an old shed that had been burned, the head arms frightfully charred by the fire. Further investigation led to the discovery-of blood on the steps of the house; and scattered about the shed, giving evidence that a struggle had taken, place, and that;Mr. Smith had been murdered and thrown into the shed, and tha storo then robbed, 'fired, 'and-' the buildings destroyed. ; This" theory is streDgthed by the following facts: Mr. Smith slept in a room in-the building adjoining the store, and was in the habit of leaving the windows of his room open. when the weather was hot. v hen ' Air-.' Farrabee arrived - at! the burning building the window and a a back door, were' open, ..'and ' it is thought that- Smith, shearing robbers "in thrf o store, got ,op to drive them off, ' aud i was -murdered by them and his body thrown where it was found, after-which; thet robbers secured their booty and then fired the building toif possible, oover thoir crime. ; .v Yesterday morning a , .suspicious looking individual got upon the cars at Harristown, where he had purchased a ticket for Mitchell. His conduct was such as to excite tbe suspicions ot Mr. ilanlon,' the condctor, who telegraphed , Superintendent Sloat. Mr. Sloat, after communicating with Marshal Akers, telegraphed Mr. Hanlon to notify the officers at Orleans to arrest the man on the arrival pf the train at that town. . The arrest was made, and the suspected party is now in custody. ' ' Mr. Smith was a son of Phillip Smith, of Franklin Township, fbis county, and a cousin xf Mf. Walter L. Smith, of this city. He was a ujost estimable young man, and his horrible death wiil send bitter pangs of anguish to many hearts. N. A. Commercial. A New Railroad Prospect. The Hickman Courier says:' We are reliably informed that negotiations are now going ou between President Cole, of the Nashville & Chattanooga and Nashville & Northwestern Railroads, and Mr. AllenT of the' Iron Mountain Railroad, to the end of immediately commencing an extension of the Iron Mountain road from some point at or Dfar Charleston, Mo., to Hickman. Mr. Allen, we are informed, has de termined upon this extension, and is being strongly encouraged by President Cole with hiswo railroads. '; Woodburn Stock Sale. The annual sale of thoroughbred and trotting stock at Woodburn the farm of A. J. Alexander; Esq., came off on yesterday, and was largely attended. Seventy five head were sold, chiefly yearlings, and the aggregate of the pales reached the neighborhood . of $25,000. An Asteroid 'colt?," out of Bay Leaf, was knocked off to S..D. Bruce for Mr. Sanford, of New York, at the high price of $4,100. Another yearling brought SlSW.Frankfort J eoman, 24th. i It 13 inferred that the art critic of the New York 'Tribune is a woman. The inference is drawn from the passage, "We are as familiar with all the litter of his full length portraits as we are with our carter," which occurs in a recent en -;cism.

. The Vincenties in speaking ible railioad of that town as a poss center, indulges in some comments which may be read with benefit in our city. Indeed, we know of no other locality to which they are more applicable than Evansville. We rather wish some of our people would regard the language a3 personal, and be stirred thereby out of their old fogyism. Says the Times, of Vineennes: : TTnf.irtnnntelv her enemies have fnr VA,rs beer, depressed by the sloth - " rmnflnt of a race that has never - . .. hoon ah e to appreciate tne progress of the age, or the possibility and imof devclooing the ve?t re sources within her reach. They started in life with a slow, inactive gait, and they are now unable to move with greater speed, and seem unwilling that others should do so. Somebody remarked that nothing would give St. Louis a greater impetus in the march of improvement than about thirty first-clas3 funerals. The justice of that suggestion applies proportionately with equal-ioice to this city, and every other that dates its origin back forty years. That old sluggish element is afflicted with a chronic selushness that will always paralyze the energies of those with whom it comes in contact, and who would otherwise move in unison with that spirit and enterprise which, has in a few years carried the civilization of the ageftp'the farthest verge of i the continent "and the distant islands of the ocean. Venerable, . old fogies, where are the monuments or your en fnnao oronhi fca wTiuih vou tiiav nn;nf witli a proud consciousness that . - - r , i . 7 ... o '.IT.i..you nave not iiveu m vaiui zix,i you contributed with a. Jiberal haad to the improvements around you:, and from which you, have reaped such Vast benefits? Where are the houses you have built? Have you given encourfirfment to emigration, or is it not trim that -vou haru always discour aged people from abroad, and depreciated te;bSiCfer" of your " town,f from a Setfislrapprehensioti that you may have increased cojnpetion? You have many such sins to-answer for. Had youfmanitCEted tee Tight gpint and encouraged emigration to your city, aod! fostered improvements and manufactures with a liberal policy, the population of Vineennes would now be three times the present number, and her wealth tenfold. The bromide of ammonium is recommended by Dr. (Jibb, of London, to those who suffer from an excess of fat. When taken in smalt doses for a length of time, it will absorb the fat and diminish the weight of the body with greater certainty than any other known remedy. (Jin. Gazette. Now, can't the learned Doctor suggest relief for those who are suffering from an excess of leanness? We see it stated in the Chicago Journal that Iowa can boast of the largest school fund of any State in the Union, having the magnifieent sum of $3,000,000 set aside for the purpose. This would sound very well if Indiana had not nearly $10,000,000, or three times as much, for the same purpose. The author of that statement had better britrhten up his statistical knowledge a little. Fort Wayne Gazette. A Portland man has cured one of the most dangerous cases of cancer by drinking red clover tea and applying a red clover compress, and thinks it' will prove an infallible remedy in all cases. . Olive Logan has written up the "Nude Woman Question " for Packard's Month' y. At the present rate, Olive's writing-i will soon be sold by men who stand in alleyways, and keep a sharp lookout for the police.
