Ou last Saturday, a little daughter of Dr. Floyd Stinson was bitten in the hand by a vicious cur. The wound was immediately cauterized although it was uot supposed that the dog was rabid. Circuit Court. The only case tried was Oberdorfer vs. Gavisk; suit to enforce payment of a debt. The case was continued, and will probably be decided to-day. " Fight. Charley Kinkcl and Hill Powers, two muscular young men, hail a fight in tho vicinity of the Court House yesterday afternoon. We did not learu tho ciu-m of tho row, but understand that Kinkcl came out first best. Base Hall. Tho base ball game last Saturday was quite interesting. Soth Coolidtfc and Dr. Unas were tho Captains of the respective sides. Tho sooro stood Coolidge, 15; ilaas, 10. Skn r Hack. The piece of artillery that has been in this city for a long time, nnd-?r the charge of the (3 rant Artillery, was shipped back to Indianapolis yesterday, au order having been sent here for its return. Colorkd Picnic. Mrs. Tennis' Colored School closed yesterday, and the pupils have made arrangements for a picnic to-day at " Blackford's Grove, which is specially intended as a rrj )ieitig over the new School Law, granting free schools to tho colored peop'o. All those who desire are invited to visit tho Grove during the day. a Hoard of Equalization. The County Hoard of Equalization will be in session to-day, and as it is desired to get through all business today, those persons who wish to make complaints for erroneous assessment or valuations, are requested to appear before the Hoard as early this morniug as possible. Let all those interested make their complaints. Fillinu Up. Frank Edmonds, with a tq iad of men, was engaged yesterday ia filling up some cisterns that had caved in, situated ia the rear of some negro shanties on Syca more Street, between First and Second. They were an unmitigated nuisance, and their abatement was most timely. . Passing Ayvay. By direction of the rubicund and efficient wharfuvas' ter, Phi D. Vcits, the Democratic hickory pole that ornamented the corner of Main and Water streets, was cut down yesterday aod manufac tured into fire wood. Like tho party it rep resented it was growing rotten and dangerous, aud it was deemed politi to reraovc it. Peace to its ashes. Opera Hocse. In consequence of the rain last evening the German Theatrical troupe did not receive an audience sufficient to justify them in playing. Tiny therefore dismissed the audience, refunding the money. We understand they will give an entertainment to-night at Mozart Hall, but have received no official notice to lhat effect.
Good Investment. In this age of j
modern.hurabugs, swindling lotrerie?, and clap-trap sensations, it is difficult for the ttia.ss of the people to understand what is a safe investment for their money. Hut, for once, we can recommend to them an investment that, is prrfectiy reliable. We refer to the great Henderson Land Sale. Although certificates are issued, and the whole atl.iir conducted like a lot tery, it is a genuine Luna fide sale of land, and Mr. MeLain has been granted authoiity by the Kentucky Legislature to dispose of his large estate in. this minuv. Sworn Commissioners have obaigewof tho entire affair, and tho drawing will take place at the Masonic Temple, in Louisville, next Sjptc-iiiber. It anything sliouhl occur, so that the drawing cannot take place, every cent of money paid for tickets will be refunded. If this is not lair anil honorable, we cannot understand tho definition of those terms. TiCktt3 only Tobacco Sales. Martin, Gardner & Co. will sell to-day about fifty hogsheads of tobacco, and will offer some fiae gra les of the staple. , Wt ldon, Bros. & Co. will have a big sale, the offerings embracing about severity hogsheads. In this lot Judge Kino, of Greenville, Kentucky, will havo about thirty-five hogsheads, and Mr. II: no will appear on the breaks ia 'propria pmona. All tobacco men know that Judge Iteno's tobacco is finely bandied, and that but few men in Kentucky raise a better article of ' the weed." Buyers will make a note of the above, and be on hand promptly at ten o'clock this morning Green Hive a Tolls. Captain Jo. McH-ynolds aal Phil. P. Gant, ovicis of the steamer Hartford, now in the Evansviilaod Green lliver trade, have by their attorneys, J. W. Bickers, cf Calhoun, Kentucky, and Azro Dyer, of Evansville, Indiana, filed a suit in the McLean Circuit Court against C. G. Sniailhouse, for unjustly and without authority having collected $1,302 05 tolls and lockage, and to test the constitutionality of an act of the Legislature entitled " A.n Aet to incorporate tho Green and Barren Kiver Navigation Company." Sale op Cotton. AVcldon Bros, iv Co. will sell, to-day, seventeen bales of cotton, , most of which will class Middling. The staple is from Alabama and Mississippi. We desire to impress upon our merchants the importance of su-taining our cotton market for the benefit of next season. There is no good reason why Evansville should not be a good cotton market, but i;' small lots are allowed to be sold at reduced figures, it will undoubtedly injure our future prospects. Let shrewd, farseeiDg business men .make a note of this fact, and use their influence- to increase the receipts and sulcd of cotton in this market. Recorder's Court. John Snyder, for slaujiht' rirg animals within tho city limits, thereby maintaining a nuisance, was 'fiord $8 TO, which he replevied. It seems strange that, after our repeated warnings, the people should allow themselves to become liable for a fiae by going directly contrary to the city ordinances. Those who read the proceedings of the Heeorder's Court will observe that the ciiy officers aro utrictly enforcing the ordinances ou nuisances, as is tLcir duty, especially during tho warm weather. Let ail others be warned in time. Steer clear of the Recorder's Court. John Dowry, from Warrick County, for an " ordinary drunk." was as sessed 7 25, which he replevied. Dowry sold a couple of horses in the city about a week ago, Vut by seme unfortunate circumstance lost all his money, some $200. lie has been uolueky, and has our sympathy. Criminal Court Boom. The work of refitting and remodeling the old Post OlHee for uso as the Criminal Court Boom will be completed today. Fine seats have been provided, a nieo rostrum made of white pine and black walnut, oiled, and a platform for the clerk's desk, have been put in, end the general appearance of the pluo is first rate. The carpenter work wis dfiu by Mr. . J. D. Fair, aud is a end. table job, tho old building being completely metamorphosed. We suppose that Judge Hobinson will take formal possession shortly. Personal. Prof. A. M. Gow left icsterday to attend the meeting of the State Board of Education. Dr. IJ. W. Cloud also left on the evening train for Bloomington, to be present at the meeting of tho Board of Trustees of the State University. Mr. Evans, of the Princetoo Democrat, was iu the city yesterday on a "flyer." Ho reports that the wheat crop of Gibson County will be very large this year. Gen. Alvin P. Horvey and daughter arrived by last night's train, and are stopping at the Sherwood House. The General looks remarkably well. Mr. II. V. Terhume, the accommodating Clerk in the American Express Office in this city, returned from Cincinnati last night, where he has been attending a trial in which ihe company was interested. He has our thanks for a copy of Sunday's Couxmcrcial. Before Justice McTernan. The only case of note before , II is Honor yesterday was Boardman .vs. Stahlhoefer. The plaintiff brought suit against defendant for allowing somebody else to take his stand in the vegetable market. A jury tried the case, which was considerably mixed. The jury could not agree, and tho matter reuiaius iu statu quo. Late. The session of tho City Couucil last night lasted until llulj, with plenty of business unfinished.

I'harles Allller - John Dannettell Considerable discussion ensued in regard to the palary of the Mayor, there being some doubt as to whether the Council really had the legal right to change his salary. It was proposed to refer tho matter to attorneys for their opinion. Judge Parrett, who was present, suggested that the easiest way to decide the matter was to make out an agreed case and submit it, by attorneys, to the Circuit Court, aud if the decision there was not satisfactory to each party, (hat it then be appealed to the Supreme , Court for a final decision. The matter was referred to tho Committee on Claims, Mr. Walker not being ready to say whether he would agree to settle the question as suggested by J udge Parrett or not. The bills of Willard & Stinson, John A. lleitz, Groshan & Hart, Bachanan & Gooding, and various other claims, were referred to tha Committee on Claims. Several yirds of doctors' bills for vaccinating2 800 persons, at ten cents each, were presented, and caused quite a number of witty jokes from the in embers of the Council. They were referred back to the Committee ou Claims, who were directed to act on them by tho yard. The committed to whom was referred the coiupliitit of J. P. Elliott, iu regard to some sidewalk im-provo-uieuts, rtcommended that the prec qit issued aeainst Mr. Elliott be returned to him. On motiou, the report was received aud concurred iu. The committee to whom was referred the question of a proper salary for the City ilecmder submitted a report, re ommc udit.g that he be allowed koOO per ear, in addition to the regular fees of his office. The report was quite elaborate, aud contained sevtra! good suggestions. On motion, the report was received aud concuried in, the order to take effect from April 1st, 1 Si The Committee to whom was referred the" petition of sundry citizens asking that John Street be extended, reported iu favor of the same. On motion, tho report was laid over lor future action. Sam. Havlin reported flOd collected for w hari'ae. Phy. D. Viets reported $170 01 collected for wharfage. John Nuveut. at his own request, was relieved from hauling Eogine .No. o, and August Gun lermau was appointed to fill ihe vacancy. At the request of McCorkle & Tweed S. P. I'arrell, their watchman, was appointed a special policeman. On motion, the janitors at the public school houses were appointed special policemen. The 1'ojlowing ordinance was read by Judge Parret, and the rules being suspended it was read for the second time, and passed unauimous'y. A supplement to an Ordinauee, i asse.1 July -St h, lsol. euti l.d, "Au Ordinance concerning tho Wharf ol tiie city ot KvansvII.e," repealing loraier Ordinances : Section 1. B- U ordalued by tho Common l ouncil ot I he cily of Kvansville Hint It fchall hereafter be unlaw ul for auy pcr ou or persons to erect, build, or pine--, or to cause to be elected, built or placed, any house, fetore'iouse. shop, sued or building n auy wharf of said city, or ou liie. shore i f the Ouio Kiver, whether the same be a pubiicor private wharf.b tween Water street and said Kiver. or between Front Street and said Kiver, ia front of or bdjoiuing said city. The object of the above ordinance is to prevent the erection ot a tobacco warehouse cn the wharf, between Divison and Pine Streets. Tiie q itstion of sidtwalk improve ments was then brought up, and a general discussion ensued, although no settled policy was decided upon by the Council. The following sidewalk improvement", which was petitioned for last year, was ordered to be put down, viz: ou the south side of Franklin Street, between Sixth and Seventh. On motion, it was ordered that a new bell, weighing 250 pounds, be purchased . for the Jackson Engine House. On motion, it was ordered that the alley situate between Sixth and Seventh Streets and extending irom Syc amore to Vine Streets, be paved, the property-holders having petitioned lor the same. Dr. ltalston appeared before the Council, aud made complaint that those persons living on Fourth Street, between Chestnut and Cherry, were greatly annoyed by tho market wagons during the night time. The matter was referred to the Committee on Markets. A petition was presented, asking that a brick sidewalk be laid down on the west side of Franklin Avenue,
Item Second lo Fourth Streets. The pttitioo wa granted. The Street Superintendent was directed to clean up the market space three times a week. ' . The Street Superintendent was also directed to haul such amount ot sawdust to the Public School grounds as may be needed. A petition was received from the residents on Washington Street, asking that Washington Street be graded from franklin Street to Tenth Street, and also to grade. Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Streets, from Washington Street to the Lonworth Tract. The work was ordered to be done under the supervision of the Committee on Streets and Alleys. Benjamin Ilirschman, Hamburger's successor, was granted license to sell liquor on Water Street, between Vine and Division. On motion", adjourned. Sycamore Street. Ilaffey & Boyle are pushing forward tho work on Sycamore Street, and Ihe Conglomerate Gravel has been spread on three fquare3. It makes a beautiful Street, and gives promise of universal satisfaction. It has been suggested that it might be a good idea to spread about three inches of the Conglomerate over the bowldered streets, there by di-pensing with the incessant noise that is caused by wagons going over them. We did think that it could not be spread over the bowlders bo thin and do any good, but we noticed yesterday, at the intersection of First and Sycamore Streets, where some gravel was spread over the bowldered street on last Saturday night, that it is already very hard, and looks as if it could be successfully used on all the bowldered streets. Main street is where it is most needed, and we learn that the gravel can be spread over the streets at a cost of about $3 per cubic yard. We believe the mat ter is worth looking into. Hope Walking. Agreeably to notice given, a large crowd assembled on yesterday evening, to see Prof. Tilley, in his daring feats on the tight rope, which was stretched across Main Street, between First and Water. Hundreds of little children assembled as early as 4 o'clock, and patiently waited until 7, at which hour Mr. Tilley made his appearance, and crossed the rope twice. Just at this time, a heavy storm of rain passed over the city, and we venture to say that no crowd ever before assembled in this city dispersed so quickly. Men, women and children dashed up and down the streets, seeking shelterfrom the storm, and to a disinterested spectator (he sight wa3 quite amusing. But the raiu put an end to the exhibition, and we suppo-e the Professor will appear again this evening. Unsettled. The question ef ordering sidewalks put down was discussed considerably at the Council last night, and after the debato was over, the matter icmaiued about as near settled as at the start. Some of the Councfimcn think that when sidewaits are wanted, five'eighths of the property-holders should petition for the same, whila others think that a petition is not necessary. L O CALJfOTICES.
