The annual ex amination of the Hebrew School will begin next Tuesday. Prof. J. W Knizht is Superintendent of the English course of study, and Rev Simon Ilecht, of the Hebrew course. The examination will last two days, and will no doubt be quite interesting Almost a Fire. Yesterday evening, about eight o'clock, owing to the gas being turned up too high, some embroidery in the show window ol Click & Schwartz, in Chandler's block, caught fire, and in an instant the light fabric was in a blaze. For tunately the fire was put out at once hut it was a narrow escape, as half minute mora would have probably involved the destruction of the entire stock. Bear Loose in the Streets. A betr belonging to Mr. Wchrstedt, and kept sa his saloon on Main. Street, got loose yesterday morning, and was pursued by two dogs, until it died. Quite a number of persons were sitting in the saloon when the bear rushed through .from the back yard, creating great consternation among hose present,- and causing some of them to leave in a hurry. From the saloon, his bearship ran across the street, and passed through a store, -into the alley, and after running awhile laid down and died. Quite a largo crowd were attracted by the excitement. Narrow Escape. A young lad by the name of Gross, son of Nathan Gross, came near being drowned in the Ohio River yesterday evening. The lad . was playing on the saw log3 near the saw mill of Ahlering & Brummelhaus, and accidentally slip ped into the water, which was quite deep, and being unable to swim, he would have been drowned if it had not been for the heroic conduct of Marshal Carter, who jumped in the river and rescued him. This is an other warning to boys to be careful about playiag near the river. We rejoice to chronicle the fortunate escape of young Gross. COMMENCEMENT DAY.
Our liillio Schools. Great Interest Manifested. . I Yesterday terminated the. BCtaooI year, the public examinations which Lave been in progress for more than a week past, culminating in the commencement exercises of the , senior class in the High School. . , 1 The morning, from eight to twelve, was occupied by the examination ot senior and junior classes ia Outlines of History, Algebra, Physical Geog ranby. Geometry and United States History, the exercises being interspersed with choice music by the pupils. ' : The examination was highly satis factory to the large audience present. The young students gave their an swers in their own language, almost invariably correct, sbowiDg that they understood the spirit of the authors as well as the text. At 3 P. M., the commencement ex ercises were began, and long before tW hnur fhe snafiions Hall was litcrally packed full, and hundreds were . , e 1 . j: . unable to find even standing room. I'he front of the Rostrum was ornamen ted with a sort of balustrade of green forest leaves, and the piano with leaves and flowers. Promptly at the hour the graduating class. composed of eight young ladies and seven youDg gentlemen, entered the sile room and took seats I I hpon the rostrum. The young ladies were dressed in pure white, with but j few ornaments, while the young gentlemeu were neatly dressed, the coun- ,. , J . . . tenancesof all beaming , with intelli. eence and hope, their modest deport-, merit winning the hearts of all that vast audience. The exercises opened with music by the members of the High School, accompanied by the piano", at which Miss Kate Hornbrook presided. Rev.J.P.E Kumler then pr offered up a fervent and eloquent prayer, invoking the Divine blessing upon the occasion, the schools, and the graduating class. The Crescent City Silver Band then entertained the audience with a piece of" their incomparable music. Then followed the orations by the young gentlemen and essays by the yoaisg ladies, as follows: Salutatory Oration By Maurice T Jones. Es3ay 4,Do Something, Do it Well, Do it Now," by Hattie I. Dur ham. Oration " Early Education. by James W. Welborn. Essay "Nearer Home," by Jennie Coif. Essay V When My ShipComea Home from Sea," by Ada L. Tolbert. Ora lion "Ambition," by George P. Heilman. Valedictory Ora tion-" MeniWanted," by. Philip S. Baker After each fourth performance the exercises were varied by vocal or in strumcntal music. Prof. Willett, then delivered an address relative to the low estimate placed upon a finished education by the people of Evansville, which abounded in many prac tical truths, though some of them were, perhaps, unpalatable, and rath er humiliating to the pride of our people. The address was received with warm applause, and on motion of Col. John W. Foster, the audience, by a unanimous, rising vote, requested the Board of Education to procur the manuscript of tbe address, and have printod three thousand copies for gen2ral distribution. The Diplomas were then delivered bv Judse Parrett, President of the Board, after tho following highly ap propriale a eloquent address. Before presenting to you the diplo mas which have been awarded to you bv the Trustees and Superintendent of this school, you will permit me to tive ouafew words ot coneratula tion for having completed its well arranged and carefully prepared course of studies Various causes have contributed to reduce the number ot successful com petitors f or tne prize which you have each won by the creditable manner m which you have completed the course of study prescribed by this school. The tedtousness ot the task, inainer enco and inattention, and often an almost culpable carelessness and neg licence have intervened, suc cess and promotion have been surrendered. and further intel lectual accomplishments forever abandoned. So it has been with oth ers, while your annual promotions have beeu to each ot you a source of unmin2led gladness, and to your friends and parents of true gratihca tion and pleasure. Step by step you have mastered and overcome the diffi culties with which all students are more or less surrounded, and under which so many others have given up and fallen away, until you have at tained your present positions of honor to 5 Gurselves, and honor to your parents and friends, x our teacbers may well feel, as they do, a high degree of pride in your present attainments, and they certainly will ever cherish and feel a deep anxiety lor your future success. Occasions like this, in high schools and colleces, are called commence ments." In this there is a meaning which might well be impressed upon your minds. Commencement why? You thought your course of study, your intellectual developments and literary acquirements, commenced when you entered the primary depart meat of the schools, and, in one sense, this was true; but it was a commencement under the watchful care -of instructors and teachers. Through their assistance, you were then expected to advance. So far, you and they have cause to congratulate each other. But this was advancing walking with the aid of - an assistant, as by repeated training and efforts the child attains the period when it can eaf'ely be
nermitted to walk alone: it may then be eaid that tbia ia its commencementin walking, bo nwyou Have each attained the period when your instructor, with a feeling approximating to parental pride, may say that you, in the intellectual, in the lite rary pathway, can .waiK advance alone. From henceforth, in the aei l- nrtnrlatfta mtl T1 'I V P 1 f mencement. Tint, well as von have earned your present honors, you cannot-afford to stop here. The occasion itse'.f presents an opportunity to admonish each one of you not to think: thai Dcause ju have completed your studies and your school days are passed, that the work of self-improvement is also nnioneu. You should rather think and feel that you have only entered upon a career of intellectual advancement and im provement which should continue throughlife. f0 with the power to make your lives useful, perhaps illustrious, and to adorn the communities in which your future years may be cast; but this can only be accomplished by a continued devotion to independent self culture. You should each bar in mind that one of the primary effects of intellectual culture is usefulness in whatever sphere of life the future may open to I . . lit' you. now muen your success m m may depend upon your respective acquirements of knowledge is almost . -I,! - . 1 i 3 , , imDossible. bv anv given standard, to measure and determine. Turning. t the audienee, Judge Parrett snid the spectacle before them was ample compensation .for all the money they bad paid for school tax, and assured them that the hops thy had entwined around the High School should not be turned tc ashes. Professor Willett addressed a few parting words to the class, after which the class sung, in excellent Btyle and with much feeling, the fol lowing beautiful ode, the musio and words of which arc original: Loud swell our songs, our strains are glad When happy hours are Hying; Low tall our uoie. our hearts are sad When hours we love are dying. Bowden then pronounced the benediction, and the audience began slowly to disperse, while the Crescent City Silver Band played another delightful air. Then commenced a scene of thrilling eloquence tha parting of the other pupils with the graduating class. Every f ice was suffused with tears, and the partings were pathetic and highly affecting. We have given the programme without remark. We can only say the orations and essays were all credi'iiule, and seme of them of a highly superior character, generally practical and full of good common sense. The day's exercises were well calcu latrd to inspire. pride and hope in the i-chool Fystem of Evansville, and with admiration of the great efficiency manifested by the Superintendent and his very excellent corps of teachers. Artesian Springs Park. There will be a concert at the Artesian Springs Park this evening, commencing at seven o'clock. The Evansville Cornet Band will be in attendance, and furnish the music for the occasion. The concerts at the Artesian Springs Park are the most pleasant and enjoyable ever given in this city, and we presume that quite a large number of our citizens will be present this evening.

dale at 4 P.M. To-Dat. A rare op- , ag-or(je(i to-dav to persons who wish to secure eligible property for residences at a moderate price, and at the same time convenient to business. While there is no portion of the suburbs of our city more desirable, the permanent location of the street railway route through this property gives it all the advantages for residences of more central positions. We particularly admire the liberality displayed by the proprietor in the width of the streets, avenues, and alleys. The lots, too, arc of a judiciously liberal size, the inside lots being thirty and the cor ners thirty-four and a half feet wide by one hundred and forty-four and one hundred and seventy-five feet deep. We understand a great many persons have been - out during , the week examining; jthe premises and selecting lots, and w? presume a large crowd will be on the ground this afternoon.
