THURSDAY.. ..JUNE 17. 1 "1UTM0R3 arc rife tliit a new Republican daily paper ia to be established at Indianapolis about August 1st, by Hon. Jons P. Peprees. The State liquid oi Agriculture offer extraordinary premiums for the best five aero of wheat this jear, the first " premium being t'JM; second, $156, aud third, SI 00. A Convention ha been ordered to prepare- a new Constitution for the State of Illinois. Delegates will be elected on the second clay of next November, the day of the usual Tall elections. The Convention will. met t in SpriDgSeld on the Ctli of .December next. Henry Cr, ay Dean is urged by certain Democratic papers in Iowa as the candidate for that party for Lieu tenant Governor of Iowa. Mr. Dean would m ike a tit and proper candi date, having been an outspoken aiid persistent rebelduriug and since the war, Evansvllle i Soiuli 'r.i Illinois Hall road Miellinr at McLrnnsboro. A meeting of the incorporator of the Kvansvillo & Southern Illinois Railroad, resident in that locality met at MeLeansboro, Illinois, on the 13ih, and elected the following Direct ora: lion. John M. Casus, and Dr. A M. McClain, of White Coun'y; Hop H. S. Marshall. A. (J. Cuin, Kq. and IX. W. Townsed, of Hamilton County; S. K. Casey, Ksi.t and Dr. W. D. Ureen, of Jefferson County A. O. Cloud, Jv-q., of MeLeansboro was chosen President. A delegation of the directors am citizens along the proposed line wil visit JOiransviUe and confer with th Board organized in this city for the Indian division of the road, at an early day. Tho road leading to St. Louis from McLe.msboro, is now under contract . from McLeanaboro west, and on soni portion of the lino tho work is going on. The Railroad lioute to Illinois. A number of the directors of the , Southern Illinois Railroad and othe citizeos left yesterday fur an cxtendei' trip, overland, into Illinois, along the proposed lino of the railroad to be built from this city. The olj.efc of this visit, as wo understand it, is to examine the route and coufer with ; citizens en routj as to what aid they will give to tho enterprise. The fact is not to bo concealed that there is quite a difference of opinion among our leading business men and property holders as to tho bet route to bo selected into Southern Illinois, tho division being between the routes to Grayville, to connect with the projected route to Olney and Mattoon, and the route to Carmi and Fadueah. Our great need now, as a city, is a railroad into Southern Illinois. Rut it is hardly advisablo to attempt to build on the twj routes s-e'.ectcd. We must freely canvass b th ruu?es and then combine all our resources on the ono which may be selected acontaining in the greatest degree the advautages to bo secured to tin's city. The Directors of the new organization styled tho Kvausvillc, Carmi fc I'adueah Railroad, should not bo too hasty in their action, and should avoid committing themselves and our city to any route until they are thoroughly satisfied that it is the best for our local interests, and such as will com bine the support and resources of our leading business men and property holders upon it. We must have vo tiivided councils, for we cannot nlford to divide our resources. iNhnx.U'OLis : o n it k s pox n ex c r . Indianapolis, June 13, 1SG0. Editors Journal : I gladly perceive from the columns of your paper that Evansvil'e is enjoying its customary amount of animation, aud that the railroad interests of your city are engrossing the attention of your business men. I read with much satisfaction the instructive letter, of your old acquaintance, Mr. G. V. Reatfy, and I consider the arguments he uses very good in pointing out the western route into Illinois from your town. The principal thing now, however, is to get your men of means to arouse to the fact that, if they coutinue sui iae as to tho importance of a Western outlet from Rvansviilo, other places will not, and you will be left behind in this ago of railroad enterprise. Looking as I do from this distance at Rvansville, and considering the advantages of its position, 1 see nothing to hinder its growth and prosperity, except an indisposition on the part ot those to be benefited to improve those advantages to tho uttermost. You h ive facilities for tratlic and trade to a considerable extent already, but they must bo increased, or your enlargement will cease. You have but ouo inconsiderable railroad outlet, when you ought at least to have three, i am well aware that railroad building is expensive, but the resources of the southern part of the State through which the roads will tend are amply sufficient to justify and defray those expenses. And my opinion is that the owners of property in the counties rtuough which the projected roads will run, will eheeriully contribute of their means to forward the undertakings. If any other city in the State possessed the advantages which Rvansviilo has, the question of the expediency of constructing those much needed avenues of trade' f would have been decided long ago' and the roads would have been built! Indianapolis, like Rvan&ville, has
two grat needs, viz: water-works
and a lirst class hotel. The first is required to supply the peronal needs ol tho inhabitants, aud to serve as a protection and delense a-.r-tin.st conflagrations, while the t her is t!eod. d lor the accommodaion oi tho?e who come to you lor the purposes oi trade. In both cases Evansville is very much worse off tlun Indianapolis, for you have noth ing like the hotel conveniences that t !,?; citv possesses, yet this people are agitating the hotel question in downright earnest; and judging from present indications, I deem it probable that another year will not pass ere this want will be supplied. In the m lttt r of the supply ot water, this city h; s greatly the advantage of Rvansil!t., lor a shallow well, sunk any where in the city will yield the owner a never filling supply of clear, pure, cold, sweet water; yet Iodianapolitans demand tuat a water works be erected. These improvements will bo opposed by the i arsiinouiou on account or the expense, but the advantage of possessing ttieni ougnt to outweign objections so frivolous. The same objections were urged when your wharf was graded, your gas worts was erected, your streets bowldered, and your school houses built; yet see what those improvements have done ior you. Your wealth, even for taxable purposes, Ins been increased in ten years lrom a little over ?;,UUU, UIH) to somewhere in the nc'ghborhood of 15,000,000, and it. you would attract purchasers from abroad to visit you and buv from you, furnish them with suitable home accommodations, and if you would promote the health of your city and defend vour property lrom the devouring calamities of fire, erect water works. There has been no lack of attractive amusement for pleasure-seekers fcince my sojourn in this city commenced I'arcpa Rosa, and her troupe, have been here, and Professor Rlack, a evident, fas given a succession of sacred concerts, which were well exe euti-d by resident musical talent, voca and instrumental, and were wel paii ioiztd by the public. Picnics and strawberry festivals, too, continue prevalent. Strawberries are more abuudaut in the Indianapolis market than I over found them anywhere and of a quality and cheapness truly astonishing. They are raised in this county, and but a short distance lrom the citv The rtlmous revival still prospers and conversions are very numerous The SuLdiv liquor law is nuidly en forced, and H good citizens unite in 'supporting Mayor Macauley.in his t!!orts to suppress the odious and heinous tratlic on the Lord's day. The whisky sellers are very indignant, and demand that the bun day law be en forced cguinst livery stables, drug stores and the street railroads, but th -ir clamor is impotent and unheeded Velocipedes are common on the streets of this city, and I never see or meet ofi, mounted by a lull grown loped of tho masculine gender, that I am not forced to exclaim, " what a fool I what a nuisance!" I consider the man a fool because his legs would do for him what it requires both legs and arms to do when perambulating the streets on his bycycle; and he is a nuuaucc because, running his machine on the sidewalks at high speed, he end augers tho feet and shins of pedestrians, or the dresses of ladies whom he meets while takinsr his in sane exercise. I gather from the published proceedings of tho City Council, inceptive steps have been taken to suppress them Indianapolis is to have a corps of carriers to deliver letters, lhis will be a great convenience. The city is iiiMi to have a system or sewerage, an improvement much needed, but beinsr so fiat, tho city will not be easily sewored. la this respect, Jvansville lias another deeded advantage over iIm Capital. I visited the R!ind Asylum on Fiiu ay al'ieriiOon, and was much impressed and benefited by what I saw. The ou!;: lady who chaperoned us through the establishment is blind. She read as easily and correctly a portion of the ew 'lestament as 1 could have done myself, her perceptions guuled by tho sense of touch alone. v i'httcss (hough she is, God t'js ijh'- a her (jm at the tijis of hrr iiiytrs! fc'le took a dissected map of the United States, disarrange! the pieces leprvsentiug the several State-, and then put the whole together, nami.ig each State as she replaced ii in its nppropriate position. The names of the capitals, and the principal cities in each Slate, represented Oy I ras nails aud pin heads, she rave rcudtlr aud exaet!y. Two hemispherical maps, in relief, passed under her hands, and were accurately delineated by her, as well as I have t.ver heard them described by any scholar whose vision was perfect. I learned one singular fact in relation to the conceptions ot persons born blind. They conceivo that the countenances of all human beings are alike; and to disabuse their minds of this mistake, busts of celebrated persons are put. under their bands. The features, of the faces of Clay and Webster are very different, and feeling them, they easily perceive the dissimi'ai ity. Gov. Conrad Baker has been very ill since L last wrote, but he is convalescing. In politics, the chief item of interest here is in relation to the validity of the Morgan raid claims bill. I am not posted as to its merits, but I have an opinion that it is rather a bigger haul out i f tho pockets of the people than in justice ought to be allowed. I am at a loss to know why a man should claim from the State payment for the loss of a horse or a cow, and a soldier's widow and orphan children not bo permitted to claim damages likewise from the State for the husband and father slain in battle. Puriug the past week, a Women's Rights Convention was held in this city. The stroug-minded gathered in considerable force, and many resolutions were passed, denunciatory of man's injustice to woman, and complimentary of woman's title to be man's equal, if not his superior, socially, morally and intellectually. A Mrs. Livermore, of Coieago, editress for fifteen years of the Chicago Agitator, and a Mrs. Swank, wife of a cancer doctor of this city, were the leading spirits c.f the meetings. They are women ot talent, but are using it to a wrong purpose. One remarkable fact connected with this movement demanding the ruht of suffrage for women, is the utter indifference of the mass of womankind to it. Evil, and only evil, can result to woman by the airitatiou of the question. The marriaco relation, which underlies the social fabric, is pretty well undermined among us already; aud should polities enter tho family circle, good-bye to family peace. Rvery year the tepugaance of" our young men to commit matrimony increases, and the social evil gathers power and numbers in an increasing ratio. This city, to say nothing of Kvansville, is cursed with, if my information is correct, from twelve hundred to fifteen hundred Cyprians. The land abounds with this class of woman, and the
numbers are every diy augmenting. Love of a lazy life and a passion for finery are the besetments which allure women to a life of sin and shame. If the right of suffrage would reclaim this large class of unfortunates, 1 would cheerfully give a vote to-morrow that they shouid have it;
but the right ot suffrage, a powerful engine for evil as well as for good,would only be a protection to them and an encouragement to others in eading a life of sin, as city authori ties would be afraid of offending them by interfering with them, as officials are now of interfering with gambling dens and whisky establishments. Mack. , Cairo and Viscexnes Railroad The Mt. Carracl Democrat of the 11th says : (ic-n. iireen JJ. Uauro, buperintendent of this road, entered into an agreement with the County Court of' Wa bash County, wmle in session last Monday, 7th inst., that if said road is not finished wit liin eight months lrom the first day of July next, that the obligation the county is under to do nate a,(XJO in bonds shall be forfeittd and void. The Terre Haute Express say: Col It. AV. Thompson claims that Honey Creek township is ahead of all comEetitors in the line of tall wheat, ile as a field of eighteen acres, the stalks of which have aitained an average height of six feet and a half. This is tall wheat, but we have sampled it and can vouch for the correctness of the measurement. There is much danger that such grain will fall, if there should be rough weather before harvest. The Wabash Freshet. The Wabash during the -week has attained flood-height, submerging all the lowlands and causing large destruction of the growing crop. It is, at the present writing, impossible to form anything like a correct estimate of the loss sustained by our farmers. Thousands of acres, in the immediate vicinity of our town, that but a few days since promised a bounteous harvest of grain, are now a waste of waters. Tho greater portion of the ove? flowed land was in corn a lar?e share of which was so far advanced as to have received the second plowing. .This will of course prove a total loss, while the season being so far advanced will preclude all hope of replanting in time to make a crop. The submerged wheat may ia some cases prove only a partial loss. We arc glad to state that the water came to a stand on Thursday night and is now falling. fteio Harmony hegifter, Vlth.
