As the boat left, dark, portcntious clouds were gathering in the west and corthwest, portending a storm,

ram accompanied by a .violent wind
The air grew so black and thick that
the darkness could almost bfelt, bur safely housed in the spacious cabius,
but few even knew the storm was
raging. The gloom became so dense that no objet could be seen, and the frequent .flashes of lightning only
reudered the darkness the more im
penetrable. Wash Elder was at the
wheel, and at once laid the head of
the steamer to the storm, and
with a firm and steady liand held
hsr there till the wind had
spent its fury. Nearly half an hour
was lost in the storm. The rain
came down in perfect torrents, but
the joyous party, unconscious of the great war of the elements outside, practically uttered " Oa with the
dance." The storm ceased, aud the boat arrived at Mt. Vernon at 10:35, p.m., when many of 'the' party went ashore, including tho band, which serenaded several acquaintances in the town. At a quarter to -12 the boat was again got under way, but notwith-
standiug the whistle 60unded the recall, and ample warning was given, a few geatlemen, including the leader of the Band, Mr.' J. T. Cox, were left behind, and the Band were compelled to return without their leader. As soon as the boat Mas ' headed up stream, preparation were commenced for supper, and soon a table, reaching nearly th : entire length of the cabin, was loaded with the mo3t magnifieent supper we ever saw spread. No pencil sketch or pen portrait could do tho
subject justice.

In the four shools mentioned abova.
the examinations were all about the
same, and as a general thing the
scholars were apt in their answers,
and showed that they had not been
neglected by their teachers. They
all have a good record. The school
rooms, were trimmed with flowers,
evergreens and pictures.
We had not the time or opportunity
to take full memorandums of all that
was done in the various schools, but
have endeavored to make our report
as full as possible.
The following schools were exam
ined in the afternoon;
, 1 jFIBST PRIMARY. Ninth Street School House two
schools The first Miss Mattie Tabor, Principal, and Miss Carrie Wack, Assistant; Number, of pupils enrolled, 71: average attendance, G7. The. Second Miss Mattie Spence, Principal, and Miss Belle Graham, Assistant. Number enrolled, 70; average attendance, 63. Both of these schools passed through thair exam
inations finely. The articulation in reading was especially noticeable, and
the discipline of the scholars was
thorough. The rooms were nicely decorated with flowers and wreaths, and all present were much interested in the exercises. " Upper Slwol House Misa Lizzie Doris, Principal, and Miss Julia Bierbower, Assistant-Number enrolled, 10G; average attendance, 97. 'The examinations in this Bch0ol were good, and fully up to the standard of the other schools. Some beautiful tableaux were given at the close, which .were encored. Locust Street School Home -Miss India Lilly, Principal, and Miss Maria Leonard, . Assistant. Number enrolled,' 78; average attendance, 84. A very fine school. Good reading, spelling and eingiog. Inauguration of tue Artesian Springs Park. The inaugural fete
at the Artesian Springs Park last night was a grand success. At an early hour in tho evening the street cars commenced runcing full, and as the night advanced the crowd in
creased, until by nine o'clock the capacity of the road proved insufficient for the demand. The elite of the city was out en masse, pre
senting as brilliant; an array of
beauty and chivalry as ever graced those beautiful grounds, formed by nature for a public Park and trails formed by the good taste aud munifi-
tites whetted by the exercises of the
evening. When all were satisfied
there was an abundance left to have
fed an hundred more. Capt. Gilmore, Kinnie Smith, Jr
Henry Mitchell, and Fred. Hartman
with their large corps of polite at tendacts, were assiduous in their at
tentions to their guests, and we have
seldom if ever seen a crowd more
amply satisfied. - The bill of fare comprised everything the most fastidious epicure could have suggested. Some
distance below Henderson, one of the valve stems of the starboard engine
broke, and the boat was' compelled to take the bank and repair, thereby losing n&arly three hours, and it was 5:30 a. m. befor--the boat
reached the. wharf: In the mean

paradise of beauty. Four thousand
beautiful Chinese lanterns and globes arranged with admirable taste and
skill, lighted up the ground with a
splendor that was literally dazzling.
Col. Wehler the Superintendent was
company, and added much to the pleasure of the evening by 1 their
charming beauty and vivacity, and
more than ono heart was pierced by
their sparkling eyes. The excursion throughout was marked by the most
in his elementand had a pleasant perfect orjer and decorum. Not
discordant word was heard during the
whole night, and not a sign tf inebriation was manifested, notwithstandiog the bar was open all night, and
John Westfall and his assistants were well patronized. ; . The . whclea flair was admirably managed, and reflected the highest credit on all participating. The Club is composed of good material, the industrious young mechanics, and art-
izans and clerks of this city, and the
young ladies were worthy of the city they represented. The affair was one that will be long remembered by all who participated, and the beautiful Morning Star and her gallant officers will stand out in bold relief upon the picture.- ; : -
Amusements. Mr. Duffield will open the Opera Hous-j next Monday night, with a series of interesting entertainments, consisting of pleasing delineation?, carricatures, singing &c,

iberal patronage, and also to Lottie Estelle is a most charming
smile and kind word for all
The Cornet Band discoursed fine
music, ana me nigut, until a late
hour, was spent with real delight by all who participated.
We hope these brilliant festivals
will be ooDtinued weekly at least, if
not oftener. A very sensible lady re
marked to us last night that the proprietors of these beautiful grounds
should be considered real benefactors to the citizens of Evansville, and so they are. t
The Baptist Festival. Last
night closed the Baptist festival, which has been one of the most de
lightful entertainments ever given in this city. The attendance last night was quite large, notwithstanding the great attractions at the Artesian Springs Park. The fair ladies were as attentive and courteous as ever and spared no efforts to please the
guests and attend to their wants.
