The horse attached to Mr. , Edward iLgle's ica wagon got frightened, yesterdai- about nooo, and went down Third Street at a fearful gait. Two persons were in the wagon, but, being unable to. hold the- horse, they jumped out. From Third Street the horse proceeded out Ingle to the Central Market, where he ran around the biacksmith shop of A, Gronenger, on the corner. of Fourth and Ingle Streets, --throwing off the bed,-breaking the shafts, .and. otherwise damaging the whwu. The horse was slightly injured, anl one of tho men got a slight scratch in'juropiug from the wagon. Another E.cnaway.-A horse attached to a light spring wagon, be longing to Samuel Williams, a stran ger, who lives near Terre Haute, got scared yesterday evening in Iront of the bherwood liou-e, ana attempted" to run off. Williams -was thrown out of the -wagon and the wheels passed over him,but he held on to the lines, and was dragged upon the pavement in front of Mr. Shanklin's residence, where he succeeded in stopping the horse. This evening the first grand fete of the season will take plaee at the Artesian Springs Park. Every arrangement for a grand display has been made, and the grounds and fountains will be illuminated with thousands of Chinese lanterns, which have been im ported expressly, for this purpose. The Evansville Cornet Band will be in attendance, and enliven the assemblage with some of their finest music. Colonel Wehler, the efficient host, will superintend the arrangements for the festiyal, and we feel certain that everything will be conducted on a grand and liberal scale. The admission foe to the grounds will be only 23 cents, . and children under ten years will be admitted free. Suitable arrangements have been made with the Street Rulway Company to convey visitors to and from the Springs; and if the weather is fine this evening, we have no doubt that a great number of our citizens will be in attendance. ' Recorder's ' Court. Jim Sherwood was called as number one to answer the'oharge of fighting, and being drunk and disorderly. In the course of the testimony it leaked out that Jiin.bad, whipped his wife six times on Tuesday afternoon. This was proved by two witnesses, and the Recorder "axed" Jim for $23 85 to heal the breach in tho city ordinance, and repay the delicate attentions that had been, shown him by the chief pommissary. Jim made a pathetic appeal to the court, and said that he had just got out of jail on Monday evening, . having, been in there the past three or fonr months. Ho promised' ro leave town if only permitted to depart, but said he had no money to, pay. bis fine- The. Recorder could not " see it in that light," and Sherwood was ordered to report to Major Edmunds. .. Kate Sullivan, for enjoying one of her semi-occasional drunks, was fined $14 30, for which she gave security and was released. Excursion. - The Evening Star Circle lqft on the Morning Star last night,1 at 8 o'clock; for Mt. Vernon. About sixty couple went on the boat, beside a number of invited guests. The Evansville Silver Band accompanied the excursionists, and played some fine airs as the boat was leaving Hundreds of people congregated on the levee to see the gay party off. Music and dancing was the order for the evening, and:no doubt all that went enjoyed themselves heartily. Tobacco Sales, To-Day. Owing to the heavy storm coming up so suddenly yesterday afternoon, Martin, Gardner & Co.. were unable to " break" their tobacco, all the hands being needed to help cover the tobacco outside the warehouse. They will sell to-day, however, commencing atlQi o'clock, and will offer seventy hogsheads, embracing some fine Shipping Leaf and Black Wrappeis Weldon Bros. &Co. sold about fifteen hogsheads yesterday, .Circuit Court. In the case pf Anna- E. Dawley vs. Francis J. IlnnEinger and others, suit for partition of land, the finding was in favor of the plaintiff, and it was ordered that commissioners be appointed to make partition of the property. The next case was Anton Snyder vs." Gpoxge Robinson, which was tried before1. the Judge. Ia this action suit was brought, to recover wages, to which the defendant put in a plea of payment. The Court found ior the defendant. Late in the evening the case of Jerry McHenry vs. Daniel Akin, was palled,- and a jury impanneled, after which the Court adjourned until this morning. Criminal Court. Robt. Moody was arraigned for larceny, but owing to absence of witnesses, the trial was postponed. - Alonzo Johnson, and Albert Jackson, two darkeys, were arraigned on the charge of burglary, which was committed sometime iu April. The Festival was well attended again last evening, but the crowd would have been much larger if it hnd not been for the storm, as a large number of persons had made their arrangements to go, but were disappointed. All present erjoyed them selves, and the ladies of the First Baptist Church deserve great credit for the agreeable and pleasant manner in which the Festival has be.cn conducted. Beautiful and smiling young ladies, with the cunningest little aprons around their waists, and email trays in their hands, stood around the vari ous tables, reidy and eager to wait upon the ladies and gentlemen who partook of -the bounteous . feast of delicacies spread before them. Jvery one seemed to do her best to please, and from our observation all succeed ed , moat admirably. The bouquet table was one of the most attractive features of the occasion, and we are indebted to several bright eyed little Misses for two beautiful bouquets. This Festival has been gotten up for the benefit of the Baptist Church, and the edifice is in an unfinished state. Our people always give liber ally to every appeal of this kind, and for this reason, and owing to tho in clemency of the weather last night, it has been determined to continue the Festival again this evening, at the Masonic Hall. The price of admis sion has been reduced to ten cents, and all who attend may be assured of kind and courteous attention, and can safely count on passing a'pleasant evening. The whole affair is conducted on the most liberal and generous scale. and there is ample provisions for all who may attend. Vocal and instrumental music may be expected at the Festival to-night A sumptuous lunch will be set to day, from 11 to 2 o'clock, at the Hall, and the business public arc especially invited to drop iu. Let every oae that can make it a point to go to-day or to-night. Railroad prom Rockport. X few days ago we mentioned that the people of Rockport were enthusiastic over a proposed railroad from that place to strike the O. and M. Railroad, and also that J udgcDehruler and others had gone to Cincinnati to see what could be done in the premises. We take from the Cincinnati Com mercial of last night, the following extract in regard to the matter: Hon. L. Q, D?Bruler. Hon. R. J. JCercheyal, and Dr. E. II. Sabin, ot Spencer County, Indiana, are in tb,e city as a committee from Rockport, Indiana, to lay beiore our citizans a project for the construction of a rail road sixty miles loner, to run from Shoals, a point on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad, one huudred and fatty miles west ot this place, to the city they represent, in Spencer County, Indiana. It is proposed that the line shall be continued irom Rockport, nine miles, to Owensboro, ivy., from which point a road is now being constructed to Russell ville, Ky., which is to be extended thence to Nashville, Tenn. Our merchants who may be acquainted with the trade of Southwestern Indiana will readily understand that such a road would bring us into desirable relations with a most valuable tributary country. The land in Dubois and Spencer counties is not surpassed in Indiana, and at present, its products have not good facilities for reaching markets. The outlet for most of it is at Rockport, where it is taken by boats, either up or down the river. Shipments of over 5,000 hogsheads of tobacco from those counties alone are sufficient evidence of the character of the farming there, and the value of the trade they will afford for the railroad proposed. Circus. We notice that Noyes' Circus will show at Cairo on the 19th. This circus is on its way up the river from New Orleans, and will probably pass up the Ohio river, giving us a call.
