No. 6 JLX'iiit Street, F.vnTl lie. MONDAY...MAY 31. !!! We agree with the Boston Advtr titer tbat the Navy Department has dona a very foolish thin? in exchanging the Indian names of our war vessels for the names of coiamonplaca inland towns and villages w hich never saw a war steamer, and never will till water runs up hill. These Iodian nunc are generally musical, and are iuvariably. original. They are American in every sense of the word, and we cm see no sense in changing them for the- names of towns and villages imported from ruurop?. The Coknek. Stone op m New Boston Post-Office. The Boston Jturnal says an intimation has. been received from the proper authorities at Washington, by the Grand Master of Masons in" Massachusetts, that it woul J bo agreeable to thera that the oroer stone of the new Boston PostOilice should be laid with Masonic honors sometime during the Jubilee week, by the Grand Lod,e of Massachusetts, and in tha presence of the President of the United S'ates and other officials. If this suggestion is carried out the ceremonies will probably take place on Thursday of that week, and will be an additional fea ture iu the pageants of the festival. -It will be remembered that the corner stones of tho S:ate House in Boston, the Capitol at Washington, the Bos ton City Hall, Bunker Hill Monu meot, and other public etructures in difiereut parts of the eountry have been laid with these ceremonies. Direct Trade and Imuilsratlon. One of the most exciting questions before the Memphis Commercial Con vention was that' of direct trade witl Europe. Second only to that in im portance and interest was'tLat of iui migration. The Southern delegates, with the enthusiam for which the people of that section are celebrated, seemel to think tbat the only thing needed was fur the Convention to re foivehat direct trade should be established, designate the peaport. and the whole work was . accom plished. IJcucc, the pertinacity with which the citizens of Norfolk, Charles ton, Savannah, and Mobile , argued the claims of their respective localities. But while they were talking and resolving, the merchants and business men of : Baltimore have been acting. A line of steamers has been put in operation between that city and Bremen, and on Monday las: arrived with its first European cargo. The steamer, Leipzig, as might be supposed, was mainly filled with immigrants, seeking a home on the rich soil of the Western Continent. One . hundred and fifty-seven ia'4TyVcTDfi?iSur'ad'CIlfo llailroad to Cincinnati. One hundred and four continued their journey to St. Louis, whence, no doubt, they will scatter through the Stater of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Ne braska. None of the large number turn their faces southward, notwithstanding the attractions of soil aud climate. Nor will immigrants .ever do bo until the people of that section learn sufficient wisdom to quit glori fying treason and rebelliou, and receive peoplo from all sections and countries favorably, and treat them kindly. To the gripe growers of Europe nc country offors such rare attractions in soil ind climate as Tennessee, North Alabama, and Georgia and West Carolinas. But these attractions fail to entice the immigrant, for freedun of opinion and security of life is dearer to him than agricultural advantages, and consequently he turns us face Westward aud North, and makes these sections blossom with lis iudustry iu spite of the unpropiticusnes3 of climate and the unaccustaned forma of agriculture to which heis compelled to give his attention. While the manner andpcrsonal deportment of all the delegates to the Memphis Convention wen friendly, it was most unfortunate t!at some cf the speeches were so il timed and inflammatory as to contri.ute .largely to secure the defeat of tie very objects had in v'ew iu callin; the Convention together. Immigrants will not be apt to locate in. a section of country whose public menglory iu an effort to break up the Uivernment. They will prefer aIwa3-3 tint portion of the country whose citizets are lawabiding aud do not toleraterebellion against the constitutional authorities. It is to bo hoped, theefore, if the peaple of the South iesire to have their country filled up y immigrants from Europe, that xtj will bo more prudent when next tbejmeet in Convention at Louisville, and give no expression to sentiments tiat can only frighten away the very element they pretend to ba so anxious to conciliate. The Kentucky tate Republican Convention. This Convention assembled at Lexington on Thursday last. Notwithstanding the party iu Kentucky seems to be hopelessly in the minority, the attendance was quite large, and the enthusiasm prognostic of success About two hundred and seventy-fiW delegates were present from all parts of the State? arid the entire proceedings were characterized by harmosy and earnestness. A lengthy arraignment of the Democratic party of that State was read by Samuel R. Smith, Esq , editor of the Frankfort Commonwealth, in behalf of a Committee cf five appointed by the Republican members the last Legislature to prepare each a document. It will .no doubt be prifited and circulated as a

The following is the platform adopted amid great enthusiasm. The lesolution endorsing the Fifteenth Amendment, seemed in particular to gratify tlie delegates, and was greeted with loud applause: TIIE TLATFORM. Resolved-, That we regard the inaugural of President Grant as eminently wise and sound, and pledge ourselves to support his administration of the Government upon tho principals therein announced. That the national debt, occasioned and necessitated as it was by the rebellion, aided iu the salvation oi tne nation, it is sacreu, inviolate, aud its payment should never be (lucstioucd in anywise whatever. Resolved, That we denounce the wanton extravagance of the State Government which has so embarassed the finances of tho State, as to make additional taxation necessary. lhe unequal administration of the law, which has made iife. liberty and prop erty so precarious in this State, and pledge the Republican party to a reform in these matters which will restore health to the finances, and give protection to all men in all their rights. Resolved, That we claim the ad mission uf the black population of this State to the right of testifying in our State courts iu all cases whatsoever, upon the same terms accorded by la'v to other classes of citizens; we claim this as an act of jjstieo to our most helpless people. and because it is right. Tlie following resolution was also adopted with unanimity aud applause Rezohed, That in partiog with that pare hiarted soldier and princely i.'1'utk-man. General George 11. Ivcntu.-kv: to 'testily oar admtra tion cf his heroic virtues and splendid deeds, and to tender him, wherever duty may call him, the assurance that our benison attend him, and our services are wholly and always at his command. Considerable discussion arose on the appointment of a State Central Committee. It was urged that tie past management of the party had been bad aud a reform in this partic uhr was necessary. It was finally agreed to organize a State Centra Committee composed of one from each Congressional District, and two from the State at large. The follow ing was tho Committee selected: State at Large W. A. Merriweather, of Louir.vilTe; Gen. John T. Crox'"tifsfi 'Issvmoc a. n.UIack. Second District General Eli II. Murray. Third District Geo. T. Wood. Fourth District M. C. Taylor. Fifth District Edaar Needham. Sixth District J. Crockett Sayres. Seventh District Willard Davis. K'ghth District Henry Buruam. Ninth District John Means. E. RuiiSEY Wing, of Louisville, who was nominated for Treasurer of State, is one of the most talented young men of the State. As a public speaker, ho is said to have few superiors in the State. He is a bold and unflinching advocate of the doctrines of the Republican party, and will can vass the State in their behalf with energy and good results. . The Convention closed its labors by listening to a powerful speech de livered by Wm. II. . Wadswortii," of Maysvillc, and one from its candidate Bith speeches are spoken of in the highest terms of admiration. It is expected now, that the Repub licans all over the State will at once take steps to perfecl their oranizat'on and rally to its support all who do not believe in the immaculateness of the Democratic party. Indiana Items. The two Methodist Churches in Madison have taken the preliminary steps to enect a consolidation, it is the intention to unite and build a new church. The Mount Vernon Union styles IIen.mxg, the late Prosecutor for this Judicial Circuit, a " model Democratic official." The Mount Vernon Union grumbles over the distribution of school money. It says, notwithstanding Posey County notoriously beats tho world in the number of her babies in proportion to her aggregate population, she does not get as much school money as- Spencer, Warrick or Gibson Counties. In the Coflnties of "Washington, Orange, Dubois, Greene, Daviess, Martin, Gibson, "Warrick, Pike, Knox, Spencer, Perry, Crawford, and Harrison, tobacco is cultivated upon almost every farm. Senator Hendricks, says the State Sentinel, receutly purchased a "milk white steed" for which he paid S800. The Senator can't tolerate black, even in the brute creation, and must have white horses. Strawberries are selling in New Albany at from twenty to thirty cents a quart, with a large supply. A new church, belonging to the Christian denomination, was dedicated at Corydon yesterday. The tax duplicate of Posey County for 1SG8, shows a delinquent list of 22,827 33. It ia estimated that three hundred buildinga wm be erected in. South Bend, this season.
