With sensations of genuine sadness and rearet we announce' the death of Captain John Frick, which melancholy event transpired at one o'clock yesterday afternoon. The deceased was a nephew of our worthy and well known fellow-citizens Peter and J. KFrick. He was Captain of Company K", Eleventh Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served with great gallantry during the late rebellion, winning the esteem of his superior officers, and the confidence . and affection ot his command. Daring the service he caught cold, which resulted in an enlargement of his kuee jinti with which he sunered tor-a l.ong time, aod at length resorted to amputation, which was performed in " this city 6omo months since with, apparently, complete success, and high hopes were entertained 6f his speedy and complete restoration to health. But protracted suffering had undermined his constitution, and consumption en sued, and to-day he lies straightened for the grave- He was a true patriot. a brave soldier, a warm-hearted and faithful friend, and a good citizen. To" day his friends and late com pauioLS in arms will gather- around his grave and will mingle their tears with the clods that shall cover him. Peace to his shes, . .. . "After lLfe's fitfal fisver he nloeps well.' What is Needed. The! eity at present is engaged in improving sev eral of the principal streets, and other publie jtnprovements are constantly being made. Would it not be well to offer the city's " debtors ' an opportunity to liquidate small sums as they go along? Wo frequently find the lock-up crowded witfcj moneyless of fenders and homeless vagabonds, who serve out a remorseless existence in dleness. It has been" suggested that the city provide these fellows with stone breakers, and "permit" them to beat out their time on the streets or in avxrrk house. Labor kills time' (and men sometimes), and it would bo but fair to allow these unfortunate fallows to shorten their days of pen ahce, if it should prore a profit to the city. We need a work-house. One of these boys, Richard Brinkman, aged thirteen years, accidentally fell from a coal boat and drowned. Efforts were made by several persons to rescue him, but proved unavailing. The boy first arose between the boats, but sank again at the moment assistance came; he next arose near the boat below the one from which he fell. A plank was thrown to him, but at that instant he sank under the barge and was lost. Young Brinkman was a bright lad and a member of the High School. His parents reside on Leet Street. The heart-rendind news was telegraphed to his father, who was absent at Cannelton. ———<>——— PERSONAL.—S. T. Palmer, editor and proprietor of the Pittsburg Tribune, wa in'the city yesterday. Not having visited; the city before for several years, he was greatly surprised to see its woudrous growth, and the evidences of prosperity so manifest oa every hand. It is hinted that the first named comes to capture and carry away iia triumph one of Evansville's fairest, daughters. Sunday School Picnic. The first Sunday School picnic of the season, we believo, was enjoyed by the Sanday Scbdal of tho Christiau Church. The use of the steamer Armada wa3 tendered for the occasion, and a large crowd availed themselves of the op portunity of enjoying a day in the green wood. Buckets filled .with good things were taken in abundance, and the boat proceeded to Locust Grove, a short distance above Newburg, : whers the party debarked and epent tke'cay joyously and merrily, as their fancy dictated. The boat with her precious freight of happy live humanity,' returned to the city about 5'o'elock, uot the slightest accident having happened to mar the pleasure of the excursion. Letter Carriers. An item in yesterday's Journal i3 ; calculated to lead to misapprehension of the facts. Upon inquiry we learn there is no authorized movement for establishing the letter carrier system in this city. The law fixes the requisite population for its establishment at fifty thousand, and although Evansville is a large and rapidly growing ity, it has not yet quite reached that number. A few years will bring this atd other city advantages. . ." Thanks. J. .-B. Troutman and Geo. W. . We daily see many boys playing in skiffs and canoes, leaping from barge to barge, or from the wharfboat to steamers, when a misstep might cost them their lives. Richard Brinkman was yesterday in his class at school, full of life, and hope, and health. In an hour or two be was taken from the river, and borne to his heart-broken mother, a lump of lifeless clay—dead—drowned. What a mournful spectacle. ———<>——— .
