has been quite cool in this region, but it has been all the better for the crops. Novel Shipment. One item of
freight skipped by the Fanny Brandeis yesterday was a lot of pig iron for Nashville. When it is considered what quantities of pig iron are shipped from that region to Cincinnati and Pittsburg, this would indeed appear like carrying coals to Newcastle.
Museum op Cueiosities. Young's,
Great Exhibition of Wooders has op:ned out at No. 84 Main Street, and will remain for a few days only. Some fine specimens of wax statuary are to be seen there. It is a museum of all sorts of wonders, consisting of birds and beatts, stereoscopic views, &c. Some curious specimens of lusus notnice are shown in his collection. The
"What is It?" is also there besides wliite mice and rats, horned owl, and many other wonderful sights that we have not time to describe. It is a great place to take children. Admission only 25 cents.
PiEcorder's Court. Business revived a little in the Recorder's Court yesterday, but no stamps were received by tho Tycoon during business hours.
Anton Rosencranz and his wife were arraigned on a charge of being disorderly. Several witnesses were examined and lawyers were engaged on both sides. The evidence was what the hangers-on around the Court would call "rich," but we thought it , i
wis very vulgar, iiosencranz anu another family occupied the same house, with a porch between them. The otlier family had some soap drying on a bench, which Mrs. Rosencranz did not like, and she pitched it off the porch into the dirt. This raised a fuss, during which the defendant
raised a hatchet and was going to hurt
somebody. The Recorder fined them $20 25 each, with costs included. They took an appeal to the Circuit Court and gave security for their appearance. The next on the docket were Ellen
Coulter and Jennie Davis, a couple of
nymph du pav$t who have figured before in the courts. They had been drunk, even so drunk as to lie down
m a gutter, and might appropriately be called "guttersnipes." They got
to quarreling and had a small fight,
and were arrested and brought before
the Recorder who charged them $5 75
each, which they promised to liqui
date to-day.
The Complete Returns. We re
publish the vote on the city ticket this mornincr. which was incorrect
beforfe, with the exception of tho vote
for Councilmaa. The figures as first
given for the latter were correct, un
less wo except the vote in the Third Ward. In our report we gave Van
Riper 207, and Semonin 20S; but the
Democratic judges refused to count
two votes for Mr. Semonin, although
they were both legal and valid votes,
and therefore, according to the tally
sheet, Van Riper has 207 and Mr,
Semonin 20G. We have elected the
entire Republican ticket with the ex
ception of Mr. Bateman, the candi
date for Surveyor, who was reported elected at first, but, owing to a mistake in the count of the Sixth Ward,
it turns out that Saunders has 78
majority. Our readers can depend on
the vote published this morning as correct, for we took the figures from
the tally papers.
In yesterday's Courier, in their re
port of the vote of the Third Ward,
they give Van Riper 20S and Semonin
20(5: but this is not correct, as the
tally-sheet only gives Van Riper 207
The Democracy claimed yesterday
that Van Riper was elected by two
votes, but such is not the case.
We cannot give the complete official vote of the township ticket this morning. The Board of Canvassers do not
meet until to-aay to count tne vote.
We will give the correct township
vote to-morrow.
6S?-It is supposed that the Eau de
Cologne Club will close up their " shebang " for a while, as they have
no further use to continue their ses
sions. The reading room, especially.
we expect, will be done away with, as
one of their members is reported to have said of those who read the panprs dnrinff the canvass, that "d n
them, they read too much." We sup
nn tbpv had some reference to the
reports of the Investigating Commit
tee that examined Mayor Walker's
books, and perhaps also to a few re marks on the same subject that ap
peared in the Journal from time to
time. We advise them to do away with their reading room, for as soon
as a man begins to read and under
stand for himself, he naturally drops
the Democratic party, and goes in
with those who are opposed to ignorance and corruDtion. This has
always been the case, and will con
tinrift tn he so. Close up the lit
erary department."
A Narrow Escape. Yesterday,
while Mr. II. Brommelhaus was try
ing to push a log rafc out from shore his foot slipped and he was precipit
ated head foremost into the river
but, fortunately, his foot caught in
the raft, which prevented him from
being carried under the rait ana
drowned. He was rescued in time to
save him from drowning.

We saw yesterday eight barrels of
sweet potatoes which had been ship

singular route. They were sent over the O. & M. and Illinois CeHtral Rail
roads to Cairo, and then by the
Armada to this city. They are a curious people up at Vincennes, and
some of them are very Green(e).

r-. - " The Turners' Fair. Fhe Fair of
the Turn Verien, at Mozart Hall, last evening, was well attended, although
we expected to see mote people present. Mozart Hall is fitted up and
decorated very finely, and the display
of articles is very large. The various
tables are presided over by beautiful and bewitching young ladies, and the
prices charged for articles that are offered for sale are quite reasonable, a fact which is not generally the case
on occasions of this kind. An ele-
gant supper is served to those wno
desire it, at very reasonable rates, and
those who attend can pass a pleasant evening, and get fully tho worth of
their money in everything they pur
chase.
This Fair has been gotten up by the Turner Society for the purpose of raising funds to aid in the erection of the new hall, in place of the one that was burned down during the Winter, and our citizens should take this really agreeable and pleasant method of aiding the Society in so doing. A good stricg band is in attendance to enliven the visitors and contribute to the pleasures of the evening.
The Fair will continue to-night and to-morrow nights, and as the excitement over the election has about died out, we hope and expect a liberal attendance. The object for which it
has been gotten up n a most worthy one, and we shall take pleasure in seeing a large crowd in attendance on this and to-morrow evening. We are especially desired by the ladies to say that they will set a lunch during the day, from 9 o'clock in the morning to 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and they invite the merchants and citizens generally to drop in. The price for the lunch is only twenty-five cents, aud is placed within the reach of all. We hope our business men will make it a point to give them a call during the day.

One op the Saved. Our readers
wili remember the accounts published
a couple or three months ago of the burning of the Mittie Stephens, on Lake Caddo, Red River, by which
some sixty people lost their lives. Jacob Stigons, the present cook on
the Fanny Brandeis, was pastry cook on the Mittie Stephens at the time of
her destruction, but was so fortunate
as to escape, liis hat and coat bear
evidence of the narrowness of his escape both being badly singed by
the lire. He was a member of Rousseau's famous First Kentucky Cav
alry, and was a brave and true soldier on the Federal side in the late unpleasantness.
A Frightful Accident. Yester
day, just afternoon, a horse attached
to a dray left standing on the wharf
started, and the tail of the dray struck
a hogshead or tooacco, cutting it so
as to start it down th levee towards the water. Michael Kagon, a roust
about on the Armada, attempted to
stop it. and for that purpose placed his back against it, but his foot tripping against a piece of dunnage, he was thrown partly down, and bent
forward, when the hogshead, rolled over him, injuring him seriously, if not fatally. He received an incised
wound in the left cheek, a scalp wound cm left forehead, a flesh wound on left cheek, an incised wound on back of his head, had his ankle dislocated, the tntal bone being fractured. It was thought one of his ribs was also broken. Surgical aid was called, and the injured man was borne to his family, who reside in the city, and
all possible assistance rendered him. He was alive late in the evening, but was in a critical condition. He has a wife and three children, and was considered one of the best hands on the Armada, having been a long time employed on that boat.
Several Queries. What use is a loafer? Is he any account to anybody? Can any town in the State of Indin . , P 1,1 Ml.
ana, ot tne size oi xjvansvnie, com
pare with U3 in the number of loafers to be seen oa the streets?
How do the cusses make their liv
ing?
Can a man be a loafer without serv
ing a regular apprenticeship at it?
WlVe, under the sun, do all the
loafeis come from that are to be seen
on our streets? Does anybody know? We have asked the above queries in the hope that somebody will be able to give U3 some light on this subject. We s?e gangs of men hanging around our streets that never seem to follow any business for a living. The great wonder with us is, how do they make it pay? Chicago is said to have five thousan able-bodied loafers. By the time Evansville gets to be as big as Chi.offr. if nnr loafers increase in the
v"bu1 same proportion, we will have twentyfive thousand. The great point of
rendezvous for them iu this city is at the corners of Third and Main Streets. We cannot understand how the merchants in that vicinity are able to do any business. The crowds are so great at times that ladies are unable to pass by. The police make no efforts to clear the sidewalks, and those who don't like it have to " grin and bear it." There are a number of people who are to be found in that
vicinity quite often to whom this article won't apply, but the number is J small. We hope to see this nuisance
abated, and throw this out as a gentle hint. What Luxuries Cost. We saw yesterday at N. F. Carr & Co.'s a pipe of brandy and a pipe of gin, just from tha bonded warehouse in New York. The duty paid on the brandy amounted to over $113, and the duty on the gin to over $108.
JBfti?" Our Democratic friends came out of their holes yesterday, and were doiog a good d(il of ' caucusing" during the u;iy, in the vicinity of Third Street. We do not know the exact cause of their troubles, but once or twice we thought wo heard the names of "Van Riper " and "Semonin " mentioned, and supposed they were exercised as to the probability of "Ec-k" serving on the Council Board, whose prospects, we are free
to confess, are not very flattering, as the decisions of the Supreme Court declare that " those two votes" will have to be counted. We feel a little" sympathy for the Democracy over the terrible defeat of Monday ; in f'aot we suppose nearly all the Republicans do, but we do not think that sympathy will cause any of our candidates to resign. .It is really pitiable to see
how sad those look that are holding the "little side offices." such as Market Masters, Wharf Masters, Police, Engineers, Firemen, &o. But, nevertheless, the fiat has gone forth they staked their all, and they losL They will be permitted to " pass in their checks soon," as our folks are going to have a " new deal."
Church Sociable. The closing
sooiable of the Walnut Street Church takes place to-night, and will be the crowning success of the series. All the friends of the church are invited. LOCAL IJOTICSI5. Imported Eull at Auction.

About sun down yesterday evening, dark
threatening cloud were gatherlug, giving tokens of rain, but they passed around. Having .had two or turee days of fair weather we may expect aclifinge at' any hour. They had a heavy snow storm at Pittsburg yesterday morning: The river is going down steadily here. The ice has brouen un in the Upper Mississippi, doin? much damage. The True Medical Doctrine. Nature, when struggling with dbea-e, Indicates unmistakably the kind of aslstance she requires. In case of nervous weakness and general debility, the feeble pu'se, the lack-lustre eye, the attenuated frame, the flaccid muscles, the melancholy visage, inform us as plainly as If -ach organ had atongue, thatarnirtcato tilmuhuil U needed. It does not require the aid of a
medical education to understand ttus dumb appeal for new vigor, lroui an exhausted system. Every reader of t!."e lines can comprehend it Just as well n I lie graduate of a physicians' cohere. Lei. not this demand of erileiled natura be -lected. Respond to it promptly by commencing a coure of llO-s'I'K I Tl ..'t'S STOMACH BIT I KRS, a preparation uniting, in their blithest excellence, the prop
erties Of a MTIMULANT.au I .N V ItioK a ' i , and an ALi krativk. Before three days have elapsed. Irom the tak ln of the llrt disc, a marked beneficial chanx" will be manifest in the bociliy and meuttl con, lit ion of the patient. The pu se will be st ronger
aud more regular, ll eye will begin to lose its dull expression, the mtmcular and nervous yslems to reco er ttieir tension Dd the spirits to Improve. Persevere, and a complete revivification of tn depressed animal and mental powers Is ceit-nn. In cse of nyspepHla aud t.iliousness, Ihe ame salutary results will be ohalued. The appetite will revive, the sailowness ol the sklu disappear, and all Ihe dlstrcHslnst symptoms which aceoin puny dis'.;'dt t ol tue stomach and liver, will r it id y sunsi le. The sudden changes of Spring ollen Intensifje-j these complaints by checking the peripirstory action, by which so much morbid matter Is evsjor.ted througn th" pores of the body, and therefore the Bl 1'TKHS sre especially useful to the lys ptic and bilious at this season. Scbcnck's Pulmonic Syrup. Seaweed Tonic, and Mandrako Pills will cure Consumption, Liver Complaint, and Dynpepsia, li taken according to the directions. They are all three to be taken nt the same time. They clea nse the stomach, relax the liver, and put it to work; then tbe appetite becomes good ; tbe food digests and makes good blood; the patient begins
to grow In flesh ; the diseased mailer ripens in the lungs, and the patient outgrows the disease and gets well. 'I his is the only way to cure Consumption. To tnese thiee medicines Dr. 3. II. Bchenck, of Philadelphia, owe his unrivaled success In the treatment of Pulmo
