.APiUL I, isa We were informed yesterday that Mr. Van Riper had secured the services of some thirty or forty of the ' Street Brigade " iu his ward. He is cojselou-i that the actual residents of the. ward ilo n it want him as their member of the Council, and therefore s jeks tr set their vrishe.i a'- naught by importing stransers in the ward to vote theiu down. This is pretty ro a ..jh. on the Third Warders. To have a mia who lin uo permanent h-jms in the ward fis-d upon them by iai; oriel vo'ers is adding iijiry to insult in ths most iJeGint maimer. We hope the honest and legitimate voters of the ward will put down this attempt to impose on them. The Strx-rt Brig.iiis. Our citizens have noticed for the pat weok a bi israde of some one hundred ai d nTty nien ostensibly at work cletnicg the streets. They also saw, if they read the Council proceedings of Monday night last, an appropriation d" nearly one thousand dollars to pay the said brigade. A large portion cf this lrge brigade are men imported iuto the city by the .Democratic mangers to vote at the coming election. Some of them have been identified as wood choppers irom Green liiver. The Superintendent of this gang regards it so good a joke that he coolly informs everybody who asks him any Questions about it that the raea wc-ro here to voto and must have something to do until the day of the election, to pay boarl. Good Democrats, as they witness their slow operations, tip each other a significant smile, as much' as to say " We have them now; that is the way to do it." " The tax-payers are a patient set of animals," so argues the Crescent Ciub, under whose auspices this wholesal-3 and unblushing importing is done ' and it makes na difference how we overreach them, they will be compelled to submit. Of course they will growl and squirm when it comes to paying the heavy taxes we impose on them, but what of that? If any of them bolt tiie ticket we have only to expend a little mora of their money in importing irresponsible voters from other localities to retain our power." We are aware that the club has much reason for its conclusions. The taxpayers are patient sufferers. Mayor Walk eh incrcjssi their taxes about .thirty three per cent., and now proposes to retain his power, to bleed them aaia tin's year, by importing strangers to oat vote them. But if all the tax-payers ia the city who were outraged by the tax levy of last year were to shko off the trammels of party and vote as their personal interests indi cite, then four or five street' brigades, such as are now idling away their time at the expense of the tax-payers upon our streets, would not be suffi cient to save Mr. Walker's adminis tration. The people, without respect tf) party, are satisfied that as a Mayor he is a failure, an 1 they are also as sured that n thin-r but a City Coun cil of the shrewdest business men to hold him in check will save the city from bankruptcy. And yet, many so thinking wiil vote to endorse Walker and encourage him in his course of folly, because he has lahelled himself Democratic. We are gratified to know that there are exceptions to this rule, but it is to take thj place of the exceptions that we have the street brigadi at work.. Wo think it strange if such shamefal and public efforts to prevent the people from regulating their own affairs in their ovu way. does not arouse aa indication that will strike terror to the hearts of those who seek to rule the people by the aid of stran gers imported into the city expressly to control the election, and whose expenses are paid out of the City Treasury. The hh4Dklln Hoys as Jokers ! All political campaigns have their humorous side. We noticed, yesterday, that - the S hank UN Bjys were the low comedians of the present canvass, and alluded to a sample or two of t h 2 i r wit. They are champion jesters cf the Van Hiper Ring. This morning we have another sample of their funny sayings. Wo think the specimen we copy below is rather superior to anything of the kind we have heretofore seen during the can vass. We copy it that our readersluay not be deprived of the good things which are daily dished out to the readers of the Courier: A AVORD TO THAT COMMITTEE. The "smelling committee" appointed by Messrs. Ileilman, Thayer, and the ex-Mayor commenced its in vestigations yesterdav. During the day Mayor W alker received several notes from the gentlemen composing the committee, asking for a memo randum book or his, which they sup pos?d would assist them in their efforts. It is gratifying to be able to state that these indignities were treated by the Mayor with the disdain which they bo richly merited. e buouiu like to know about what amount 01 reeneer, rhA wnilflm'n and those who appointed them, attach to the office of Mayor of Evansville, tnat they take upon themselves the omce 01 demanding, as rioht h opening of a book which does not ije oai 10 tne puDiic records We should like to know. t ;f they fully appreciate the exact inierence wmcn their conduct implies. D you really believe. Messrs. IloliitiL'sworth. Lemcke nmi Decker, that William II. Walker i dhhooest man? Are you prepared, as men of honest impulses vourselvea' to oneDlv avow such a sentiment a3 this.' Iryou are, let us hav? it with becoming candor, and we will meet i in a similar spirit. Ji jr. do not force the public, by such conduct as your notes of yesterday imply, to set you in the category with those who cou duct the Journal. You are, com

men or noDor. nv ecu that repuwtioa nu-.vf" Mayor Walker had a charnc if ( ah n I.., in t ho . to h nro one of your number was lorn, and Ion? years before two .of you were known in Evansville at all. Be assured that.you cannot injure him. Be careful that you do not injure yourselves. "During the day, Mayor Walker received several mtes 'from the gentlera.n composing the committee, asking !Vr a memorandum book of his, which they supposed would assist them iu their efforts." By referring to the report of the committee, it wiil be feen that thr "Memorandum Bj ik" called for by the committee was the City RyLter of Binds, and the book cont lining the Account of the Street Improvements. ' Does Mr. Walker intend appropriating these b;oks to his own private use? It would seem so, if we are to bilieve the Siianklin Boys. It' we remem ber rithtiy, the Mayor has cstablishel a precedent for himself ia appropr'nting' official books for private use. We published, our readers will recol lect, several . months ao, some facts showinz.that His Hon)? on on-s occa sion, after - being paid by the county for making out a Real - Estate Regis ter, at tiie expiration of his term of office appropriated it to his own pri vate use as a real estate atreut and dealer. It would freem from the statement of the Suanklin Boys that His Honor regards the Register of the City Bonds and Street Im provements as "private memorandum books," which do not belong to the public. Indeed, the Shankxin Boys boldl' assert that these books do not belong to the public records. Is it not alarming, when a city oifieial decides that the public records are his private memoranda books, aad refuses to let the people scj them? These books, which, th cii.vNKLiN Boys say, are Mr. Walk es's private memoranda books, were i i the office of the City Clerk, among the other records of the city, when Mr. Walker was elected Mayor. By what ruht has he abstracted them from their proper place? Does h intend to restore them to the city, or is it his intention to file them with the County Register of Real Estate as valuable additions , to his private lib; ary? This is a serious matter. The tax-payiug voters will do well to imiuiro into and think about it. The Suanklin Boys inform Messrs IIollinqswortii, Lemcke and Deck eij, that they are " comparatively youug men, yet, and have .hi, herto had the reputation of bei:;g men of honor," and exhort3 them not to soil vhat reputation now. The Suanklin Boys furthermore inform these gentlemen that they cannot injure Mayor Walker, but may injure them-elves We know that it has been fartkeat froai the inteations of the gentlemen compiling the investigating committee to injure Mayor WalkEit. Wo also know that they were utterly astounded at his refusal to let th?m see the Records of ihe City, which he had carried off to his private office. Up to that time they l.aJ evcr confidence in his integrity, and thought if there was anything svrong it was to be attributed to his inexperience in the management of corporation as largo as our own. Mayor Walker's conduct is, however, calculated to arouse the gravest fii-pieiona as to his integrity as a public officer. If his transactions are all straightforward and honest, why hould he shrink from a most rigid investigation? "The righteous are bold s a lion." It is the wicked that flee. We think the SilANKLIN Boys ou(rht to commit that little verse in Proverbs fur their next Sunday School lesson. We fear, however, that they have long since discardad Sunday School instructions, or they would not be eo reckless and regard less of truth in their assertions. ( We piesume, notwithstanding the om nous warning ot the mianklix Boys, that the Investigating Com mittee wiil go on with its work, and hew to the line, let the chips fall where they may. The wealthy and influential are either exempt from such wrongful inflictions, or can easily obtain redress and satisfaction; whereas, such as I am, have to appeal to the public through the press for aid and protection: the press which after all is reilly the scourge of ty rants of every description. The heartless may placidly sneer and say "served him right, let him behave himself" but to such I have but one reply, to-wit.: "Take care good man that the house in which you are living is not a glass one."
