Kali road S7,!0 Now, what does that mean? An examination of his report of the indebtedness of the city shows that on Bonds outstanding issued to the E. t C. Railroad, there is due $33,000. Ex-Myor Baker reported the fame amount due April 5th, when Mayor Walker took possession. Heuce none of the Ronds were paid during the year. The interest on these bonds is seven per cent, per annum, amountin- on the 33,0(J, to $2,310 per yea-. The difference between the amount reported paid and the amount actu ally paid is S.j.CX). We copy from the Courier the fol lowing report of the little excitement at the Democratic meeting on Hatur day night. Wo do so that our readers may understand the full merits of the case: Mr. Walker said he had found it very difficult to make a financial rofiort, as the clerk's books had not cen closed when he commenced, and he had, therefore, been compelled to make up the report item by item. His administration was ushered in under very embarrassing circumstances, and, to add to the difficulty, the Journal had advised the peop'e not to . pay their taxos. Notwitht,t:indin.: tlvis, however, the taxes had b-eu collected, and the present city officers hid done as well as could have been expected of them. The Mayor then entered into a review of the controversy which had sprung up between the Courier and the Journal touching his report, and proved conclusively that the Journal, in the absence of any facts damaging to the present administration, was resorting to misrepresentations and porMOoal abuse. He then referred to the expenditures of th? city during his administration, claim ing that they had been less than thewe of his predecessor in otuce. For instance, in the one item of gas, the city had saved f 1,000 this year. Mr. Ileilman, from the rear part of the hail, cried out, "that is a lie." In an instant every man in the house was upon his feet and serious trouble might have ensued, but for the firm, dignified and manly bearing of the Mayor. He shouted to the audience to keep their seats. Ho had been taking that word for the past week and it could not hurt him now. The excitement which could not be allayed, prevented the Mayor from continuing his remarks, and after a few words Iroiu Dr. Morgan, the meeting adjourned. Mr. Walker says he " found it very difficult to raako a financial report as the Clerk's books had not been closed when ho commenced." The Clerk's books were fully posted many daya before the Mayor made liis report, and had been compared and found to agree exactly with tli3 Treasurer's books. Therefore the Mayor's difficulties existed only in his imagination. The Mayor next "entered into a review of the controveisy which had sprung up between the Courier and the Journal touching his report, and proved conclusively that the Journal, in the absence of . any facta damaging to the present city administration, was resorting to misrepresentations aud personal abuse." But why don't the Courier give the proof? Why does it omit that, the most important part, of the Mayor's speech? We have been calling for the proof for more than a week, and still it is not . forthcoming. Mayor Walker charged that Mayor Baker did not give the full indebtedness of the city in his report of April 13th, 18G8, by over $37,000. This we have repeatedly and emphatically denied, and called upon Mayor Walker to substantiate his statement by specifying, item by item, the character of this indebte Jness. This he and his friends persistently refuse to do. The only reason why rhey don't do it is, because they can't. No such indebtedness existed, and they know it. Mayor Walker asserted that a part of that indebtedness was notes due in bank June 2d, amounting to $14,-409.-10. Wo have denied the existence of such notes, and challenged the Mayor or his friends to specify them. But the challenge is disregarded. We suppose it will be disregarded. Why? B -cause the Mayor knows that no such notes were in existence at the time he took possession of the Mayor's Office. Now, because of these things, iho ' Mayor says with the meekness of a ! Whether or not it becomes a law is another question. Wc oues3 that bill will not get thiough the New York Legislature.
