FDiiUXMUEIt BY THE CYAXSY1LLB JOUHXAb 1 0 SI PAH Y, 1 o6 Lorant Street, F.vnnnTiile. Wii NES?DY... ..MARCH 24, 1 i,9. lUXOYEIi lOLLEUE. Hasovkr College, Hanover, Iudlana, March 19, 1SC9. J E lltors Journal: We desire to present to your readers a few facta which coocem the welfare of the above named institution, of vhose prosperity many of the citizens -f Evansville will be pleased to learn. The embarrassments under which it ha3 been laboring for some time past have been so far overcome that with the continuance of the present administration, it bids fair to be soon in as prosperous a condition as any of our Western Colleges. The Faculty have the respect of all the students, especially the President (Dr. Archibald) who, by hi3 kindness and firmness, secures the good will and obedience of all. - It U notour intention, at present, to make a full statement of the con dition of the College, but we wish to preseiit some things of special inter because of their late occurrence, jpaot' their beirg immediately couuectcd with the advancement of the Institution. Hanover College ha3 been celebrated for having sent out from hci walls so many who afterward devoted themselves to the miuistry. And fur numbers no Western College has scut ont so great a proportion to this work. Within the last, month she has experienced the 27th revival of religion fincc her founding, 40 years ago. The minister under whom the revival took place, was the lv;v. Mr. Lapnley, of Danville, Ky. lie came to II. unsolicited. Very few, if any, in 11 were acquainted with him. lie seem ed rather to have responded to a higher call than that of a mere invitation from the people here. lie ia u very earnest preacher; plain, clear and forcible in his manner of presenting the truth. His power seemed to lie in the distinctness and directness of his appeals to the sinuer, ratler than to the boldnes-s of his cp;i cejitions, or to his oratorical piwer. During his atayiu the village, tlu-ie was held a daily prayer meeting by the strident., at which, frequently, three fourths were present. Then; was also a similar meeting held b the young ladies of the village These meetings, together with those conducted by Mr. Lapsley, and by the prayers and labor of God's chil dren at this place, resulted in the blessing of the College and village by an addition of thirty-five to the membership of the Chuch, (Old School Presbyterian). Of this num ber thirteen were students, and ten or twelve weio young ladies rf the village. Although the number of students uniting with the Church at this time was not so large us might be desirable, yet the privileges ami influences here are such that it is almost impossible fur any one to be indifferent and cirele?s upon the subject of religion. What better guarantee of success for a College could be defired than that so many of the stu dents are followers' of the Savior, (near two-thirds of the students arc professors of religion,) and that so many recruits are added from those attending here. One word with regard to the ad vantages epjoyed in the literary socie ties. In these societies the opportunities for mental development and culture are equal, if not superior, to those of the College, for in them the students learn to know their power and abilities, and sooner overcome their diffidence than they could without them. Knowledge stored away in the mind, it not used practically, as required, avails but little. But, put to a good use, as it is in these societies, it makes the student quicker and more diligent in his studies. I no best students are, as a general thing, the best and most faithful in the performance of their Society duties. The rules of order of the Societies are found in "Jefferson's Manual," except it be the laws for the arraign ment of members for the non-perf'orm ance of duty or non-payment of dues. We had quite an interesting and ex citing time, a week since, ia the trial of some upon the last of the two fore going charges. The society formed itself into a court, before whose bar the cases were tried. The prosecutors ia favor of society wi re Messrs. Walker autl Dodge; the lawyers for the defense were Messrs. Hodsou and Coulter. The court continued in session for five hours. The lawyers jro and con used one another up in their argu ments, showing their ability for debating and the energy with which they coald enter upon such tasks. All the criminals except oue were found guilty of the charge brought against them. This night's work may have been a foreshadow of the direction in which the taste of one or more of the disputants may turu in after life. At any rate, the manner in which the trial was conducted, gives evidence that all engaged would not remain idle lookers-on in the ercat drama of life, but that, whore necessity called there they would be found, earnest and aetive iu the discharge of their duty. If convenient, more anon. From yours. Delta. Proclamation. State of Indiana, Executive Department, j Whereas, The General Assembly of the State of Indiana, at its late regular session, failed to pass the" neces sary appropriations to carry on the State government and to meet the current expenses of the benevolent and other public institutions of the State, and by reason thereof, the public welfare imperatively requires that said General Assembly should be convened in special session with the least practicable delay; Therefore, I, Conrad Baker. Governor of the State of Indiana, uo issue this proclamation convening the General Assembly of the State ia special session, and summoning the members thereof to meet in their respective Halls of legislation in the State House at Indianapolis at two o'clock p. m. of Thursday, the 8th day of Am-il A I) 13G9. P"i,A.xM In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name and caused the seal of the State to be hereunto affixed at Indianapolis this 221 dav of March, A. D...1SG9. y fL. S. ) Conrad Baker.
