SATURDAY .MARCH 20, KSJ The Elec.Ion on Friday. Messrs. Uuandler, Hill and EssLISGER bavins all declined to run for the Legislature, in opposition to the peceJing Democrats, the Republicans of the county are without a ticket, and consequently will take no part in the election on the 231. There may be one, here and there, who, like Mr. Chandler, may deem it cecessary to show a becoinicg resentment by voticg for the bolters, but we think cne might easily count them all on hi uasrers. While the Republicans gen eialiy are opposed to the ratification of the Fifteenth Constitutional Amendment by the Legislature, until th people of the State have had an opportunity to approve or condemn it at the ballot-box, they do not regard the revolutionary proceedings of the Democrats, under the circumstances, as at all justifiable, and will be careful not to endorse them by voting for the re-election of the fugacious members. We have repeatedly demon strated that the Democrats had ample time to Lave enacted all necessary legislation, had they remained in their places until the hour fixed for the consideration of thc'Amendment. By resieninz. five hours before that hour, they proved they were fully as anxious to defeat the appropriation bills, and other important bills, a? they were to defeat the Amendment. That, really, has been the question at usue. They have attempted to shirk that responsibility, but have not been able to do so. The thou sands of dollars expense to which the various counties have been subjected is due to them and them alone. We expect, then fore, that the 11 publicans of this county will give the election on Tuesday a wide berth They have no part or lot in the tint ter. It is a speciho arrangement gotten up by our economy-profjs-iut Democrats, and there will be no dis position to prevent them having a monopoly of the glory that is to be achieved by it. It is true, the Republican tax-payers of the county, a; usual, will have to furnish a large portion of the money which is to pay the damages for this Democratic frolic, in the way of extra mileage, extra postage stamps, and special stationery, but, after having . stood the skinning operation at the hands of our Democratic City Admin istration for the last year, a slight fresh flaying can hardly occasion any great amount of squirming. We commiserate Mr. Chandler's condition. He has undergone a great many terrible dispensations daring hi3 life time, but we question whether he has ever experienced such keen suffering as he must endure in casting his first Democratic vote. Mr. Chandler Declines. F. M. Thayer and Others: Gentlemen Mr. Hill and Captain Esslinger having declined your invi tation to become candidates for the Legislature, and no disposition beinp evinced to supply their places on the ticket, I have no course left me but to withdraw my consent to make the race. I regret this for no other reason than that the Republican party of Vanderburgh County, by its failure to present a ticket, loses the opportunity of demonstrating its true sentiments io regard to negro suffrage, and the proposition to ratify the Amendment to the National Constitution, embracing it by the present Legisislaturo. I withdraw in tavor of, and shall cast my vote for, the Democratic can didates for Senator and Represents tives, ' with the distinct understand in," to use your language ayain. that if elected they wilt di all in their power to defeat the ratification of said Amendment until the same is approved by a majority of the people of the State." 1 shall do so with an earnest hope that their labors in this behalf will be blessed, and that the result will ba to bring this question before the people in the legislative canvass of 1870, when (that bein?, probably, one or two years before the Democrats wiFl be ready to adopt it as a party measure) I predict it will be defeated by a majority in the State of fiO.OOO votes. 1 m y then be a candidate again, (there is no telling what a man may not do when he once begins to run for office), but whether 1 am or not, I hope to be able to take part in the discussion of the subject, and to prove to the people that negro suffrage is, in principle, nature, and essence, a Democratic and not a Republican measure. The Republican party, like the old Whig party (of which it is merely the administrator de bonis non), has always depended, and, in the nature of thing-?, must always depend, for its success upon the intel.igence, patriotism, and virtue or the people. To be a Republican, it is requisite that a man reverence God, honor the laws, and love his country and his kind. Therefore, Republicanism should seek to elevate, not deerada, the suffrage. On the. other hand, Democracy, ever since I knew it (I have been fighting it, mau and boy, right straight alone-. just one-third of a century), has been
a standing appeal to all that was IowCongregatioDalist, Milford, N. IL,
and vile and dezraded in human nature. To extend the area of ignorance and vice is just to that extent to increase the Democraticparty. Therefore (7. e. d.), negro suflrajra is naturally, intrinsically, essentially, a Democratic measure. Thanking you, gentlemen, for the opportunity you have afforded me of setting myself right with all parties, so that I may start fair in the next election, I now withdraw from the canvass for Senator in favor of my quondam brother Whig, Know-Nothing and Republican Dr. Morgan, who, though he ha3 refugeed to the Democratic party for office, may be trusted upon this question, I think, to resigu as well as I could do it myself. Very respectfully vour friend, Jno. J. Chandler. March 13, 1SG9. More Quibbling. The bolters and their apologi-ts are badly worried to invent pl-iusib'e excuses for breaking up the Legislature before the general appropriation bill could be passed. The latest defense

cry i; fuicMuii by tuo Evausvillo (Join in; whiph Eiys: '"Notwithstanding the fact that the Fifteenth Amendment had been made the special order for o'clock iu the afternoon of that day, the Democrats ! had positive evidence that it would be called up for consideration immediately upon the assembling of the Senaic on Thursday mornicg." There is not a word of truth in this statement, as wc know. The Republican Senators were anxious to piss the appropriation bill, and the Finance Committee stood ready to renort it la-:k on the meeting of the Senate Thursday morning, but before the hour fixed tor the morning session, me juemocrauc senators hal filed their resignations in the Governor's offine. The truth is, and Democrats should be ashamed to deny it, the resigning members meant to force the Governor to call an extra session of the Legisature.' Had that not been their ob ject the Democia'ic Senators would not have resigned at all. lhe resigna tion of the minority in the House of Llenresentatives would have been as effectual to" prevent action upon the Constitutional Amendment a3 the resignation of the Democrats in both Houses was, because it had passed neithor House, and breaking a quorum in either must have prevented its rati fication. The House had already passed the i Impropriation and election bills, and brrakins a ouorum in that branch only, would have left the Senate op portnnity to act upon those important measures, without the least danger that the Amendment would be passed by tho House. There is no escape from the conclu sion ihat the Democratic members deliberately resolved to compel an extra session, otherwise they would have broken a quorum in the House alone. If they honestly thought that du'v required them to prevent the consideration of the Amendment by revo'uti ouary proceedings, that is as far :is they need liave gone if they had not an extra session, with its mileage and pickings, in view Ind. f O - HOW U S&Ile-J Vba Mttftday, ' iu reference to tha beautiful incident
n our Lords hie, when the people greeted His approach to Jerusalem with hosannas ana strewed their girments and wived palm branches beore Him. 1 his incident is known to have been on the first day of the week in which He suffered. And hence this last week of Lent is called Ioly Week, in reference to its holy events; or Great Week, because of the magnitude of the redeeming acts of Christ. In this last week of His life He was betrayed, tried, condemned and eraciueu. tin Wednesday Judas bargain ed with the High Priests to deliver Him up for" thirty pieces of silver." On Thursday, "in the nk'ht in which lie was betrayed, He took t read and wine and instituted the Holy Com munion. For this reason the Thurs day in Holy Week is called Maunday Thursday, irom.lhe.word mandate, to command, because the Saviour com manded the Church to celebrate that Communion. Friday has always been designated Good Friday, from the great good procured to mankind by the death and atonement ot Jesus. The solemn associations of this concluding week of the Lenton Fast, make it peculiarly interesting and instructive. The shadow of the Cross deepens upon the Church, not to be dispursed until the Easter dawn of gladness. As our Saviour remained among the dead" from Good Friday to Easter, that period from Friday night until Sunday morning, is especially set apart for the commemoration of the Intermediate State, 1. e., of the dead between the death and the futuro judgment. On that doctrine i3 based the Articles in the Apostle's Creed of Christ's descent into Hell or Hades. A minister of Connecticut, while preaching a few Sabbaths eince, seeing several eyes closed in the house, startled his hearers by the bold assertion. " There is not a truth in the Bible," followed by a pause long enough to wake all the sleepers in the congregation. Then he continued, " that is not applicable to some condition of life." There is strong talk of the election of A. P. Peabody, D.D., as President of Harvard. Dr. Peabody is the present preacher to the University and Plummer Professor of Christian Morals. lie is represented a3 a conservative man, with decided tendencies to orthodoxy. His position is that formerly, filled by Dr. Huntington, Bishop elect of the Episcopal Church, and hopes are expressed that he may follow the steps of that Bishop. The committee to whom was referred the question of ordaining Rev. Matthew Hale Smith as Pastor of the Laight Street Baptist Church, in New York, have reported that they find it inexpedient, as it is but a few months ago that he applied to be received as a member of a Church of another denomination, and that they refused to admit him. Without a Good Digestion All other temporal blessings are comparatively worthless. Tbe dyspeptic million aire, who has tried all the potions ol the medical profession in vain, and believes his complaint to be incurable, woul 1 give half his fortune to be treed from the horrors of indigestion, and thus enabled to eujoy the other half. Of course he would. Perhaps Hostetteu's stomach Bittkks has been recommended to such a sufferer. Possibly he has turned irom the friend who made the suggestion with a sneer, intimating that he liasrui faith in any ' patent medicine." If this has been the case, so much the worse for him. His incredulity dooms him to a life of misery. All tbe luxuries which wealth can purchase are at bis command. Not one of them can give him pleasure, ills own irrational obstinacy is his bane. The masses, happily for themselves, are less keplieal. There is such a thing as bigoted unbelief, as well as bigo'ed credulity, aiid a golden mean between the two, which men and women who are gifted with common sense adopt and profit by. These are the class that patron ze and redolhey approve this famous anti-dyspeptic and anti-biiiious preparation? rtimp y because they have not been too much the slaves ot senseless prejudice to give it fair trial, and have found that when all o'.her tonlo, stimulants and stomachics fat ed, it produced the desired effect. "ctrike, but hear," said tde Roman sage, when his ignorant enemies were assai lot: him. " Doubt, but try," says the man who has been curei of indigestion, or bllliousness, or intermittent fever, by the Bilter, as he relates his exnerience of the medicine to his invalid friends. Whoever is so wedded to bis own foregone theoretical conclusions, as to decline to test the properties Of a medicine endorsed by the testimony of intelligent men in every walk of life, and approved by the people at large, deterves to suffer. Scncnck's Pulmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic, and Mandrake Pills will cure Consumption, l iver Complaint, and Dyspepsia, if taken according to the direc tions. They are all three to be taken at the same time. They cleanse the fctoioach, relax the liver, and put It to work; then the appetite becomes good ; the food digests and makes good blood; the patient begins to grow in flesh ; the diseased matter ripens in the lungs, and the patient outgrows the disease and gets well. 1 his Is the oiriy way to cure Consumption. To these thiee medicines Dr. J. II. Schenck, of Philadelphia, owei his unrivaled success in the treatment of Pulmonary Consumption. The Pulmonic Syrup ripe t 8 the morbid matter in the lun nature throws It off by an easy expectoration, for when the phlegm or matter 1& ripe a slight cougn will throw it off", and the patient has rest, and the lungs begin to heal. To do this, the Seaweed Tonic and Mandtake Pills must be freely used to cleanse the stomach and liver, so that the Ful monio Syrup and the food will make good blood. Schennk's Mandrake Pills act upon the liver, lemoving all obstructions, rjlax the ducts of the call b adder, the biie starts freely, and the liver is toon relieved; the stools will show what the Pills can do ; no thing has ever been invented except ca!o mel ( deadly poison, which Is very dango. ous to use, nnleas with great care) that will unlock the gall bladder and start the secretions of the liver like Schenck's Man drake Pills. Liver Complaint is one of the most prominent causes of Consumption. Schenck's Seaweed "Tonic Is a gentle stimulant and alterative, and the aiuail in the Seaweod, which this preparation is made of, assists the stomach to throw out the eastiic juice to dissolve the food with the Pulmonic Syrup and is made into good blood without fermentation or sour mg in tne stomacn. Dr. Schenck, in his treatment, does not trv to ttop a cougn. mxlit sweats, chilis, or fever. Kemove the cause, and they will nil stop of t heir own accord. No one can be cuied-oi Consumption. Liver Complaiul Dyspepsia, Catarrh, Canker, or Ulcerated Throat, unless the liver ana stomach aie made healthy. When there is no lung disease, and only Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia, Schenck's Seaweed 'Ionic and Mandrake Pills are sulficieut. without the Pulmouic Syrup.
