Old Sol. did more for the improvement of the streets, yesterday, without costing the city a cent, than the Street Commissioners did during the week in last November, when their joint bills were over $1,000. Beautiful Sunsets. During the past several evenings our citizens on Water Street have been treated to a series of magnificent sunsets, some times of azure and gold, then orange and vcrmillion, and last evening it was of ultra-marine blue with silver fringing. , , DatiK Nights. Wo admire econ omy in the administratioa of the affairs of the city, but we do not see the economy of leaving the city in darkness after the moon set3 at 9 or 10 o'clock, especially as the Gas Com- .' pany charges just the same, and. the salaries ot tne lamp-lignters go on just the same as if the lamps were brightly burning. ..- ' A Noble Present. We saw on board the steamer Lewellin yesterday a fine specimen of the Golden Eagle, which had been presented to Captain J. L Davy by some of his friends up the Tennessee River. He was in a chicken-coop aud we could not get a fair eight at him, but could see that be is a handsome bird. He was cvi dently not satisfied with his imprison ment, but was continually striding buckward and forward in his coop like a lioi in its cage. Almost Persuaded to Speak the Truth. The organ of the city authorities was very nearly betrayed 1 iL A 1 3 the streets of the city. We remember that some weeks ago it said very dis iinctiy that tne streets Lad never been in such a horrible condition as at that writing, but as soon as it dis covered that it had stumbled UDon the truth for once, it tacked right about.
