TheRecorder had a fair run of custom yesterday, but ; not up t the usual Monday'a busineasj We regret to say. that the Recorder has been somewhat: indis posed for several days past, and had to retire early yesterday." .It is a little remarkable- that three of the most prominent' dispensators of justice in theity are on the- sick list two of them untirely unfit for duty, and . the other nearly so. Emanuel Jackson, a colored individual, in: . company with a fellowcduntrytnan, Wm; Read, was drunk and profane. ' Jackson was charged $G 95, .which he paid. Read was charged $5 50, which he secured. Pat. Kerrigan, a descendant of the Huguenots, we should judge by the name, was exceedingly drunk, . on Saturday, so drunk in, fact, that he had to be trundled to the calaboose on a dray. For his luxury, and the accommodations he had received, he was required to pay, and did pay 10.95. , ;;; - Helen Hamburger, wife of the fa mous Philip of blessed memory, wa3 charged with having assaulted and battered a woman that had been employed in the family. This proved an expensive luxury, as the Recorder charged her $17, which she promised to pay during the day. Several other affidavits were filed and warrants issued, but tho parties had not been arrested. . 1 A. Rosy Day. A3 an'; indication of the lively condition' of business at the city wharf yesterday, we may state that there were twenty 6teamers af(the landing during the 21 hours ending at midnight last, including three firBt-clasa - Louisville and New Orleans packets. ' 1 Fiairr on Main Street. Pugilistic sport seems to be on the increase, and the example of Blaekstone and Qaintillion seems to be spreading. Yesterday, Lignum and Stannum , had a controversy the exact rxiint in dispute not having been definitely ascertained, Lignum waxed wroth and handed Htannuni one. which sent htm to grass. The victor dropped into the Recorder's office to pay for the taxing, but His Honor had retired. Stannum, also, called, but there was no one to receive his complaint. JSjTvEnvelopes, Letter Paper, Legal and Fools Cap, or anything iq that line, can be purchased at very low rates at the Journal Office. " County Commissoners' Court Special, Term. The County Com missioncra held a special term yesterday for the purpose of opening bids for the proposed erection cf an addition to the Court House. Upon opening the bids, they were all found to be so much above the estimates of the architect, Mr. Mursinna, that all were rejected, whereupon on motion of Mr. Decker, the order for tho construction of the proposed addition was rescinded. - Azro Dyer, Ego,., was e-eetcd to fill the office of County Attorney from the 1st of March next. James D. Saunders was selected to superintend the construetion of the new Pigeon Creek Bridge, near the Cresceut City Springs. '.-... Kentu cky Property for Rent. R. J. Littlepage, of Madisonville, offers desirable property to rent. See his advertisement elsewhere. New nosE. The city has just received 1,200 feet of new hose. They are. warranted to bear a pressure of two hundred pounds to the square inch, in sections. The test was made on Saturday with twelve sections, or six hundred feet, with the most powerful, engine in the city, and the pressure to which they were subjected was equal to about one hundred and ninety pounds. They stood it without showing a sign of bursting or even leaking. The test was even more severehan that justified by the warrant. Valentines. As usual, the Post Office Sunday and yesterday was overpowered with valentines.' A small minority were tasteful and elegant, while a large majority were low, vulgar or obscene, which indicates about the composition of the community. It is about time public opinion would wake up to the necessity of a reform. The largest , proportion of persons calling for valentines are children, and it is not highly creditable that the large majority sent and received are of a low and vulgar character, and oftentimes bordering upon the obscene. St. Valentine's day is fast becoming an abomination. . . Mathematical. Professor Andrews, of New York, the celebrated Mathematician, who is so well known throughout the country as a teacher of. this .new and exceedingly rapid mercantile course, consisting of interest, percentage, and the short multiplication of plain and fractional numbers, etc., and who is meeting with fine success in organizing a class of our citizens, comes very highly re commended by hundreds of the first business mem' of Chicago and other cities. Prof. Andrews has rooms at the Sherwood House, where he may be consulted when not professionally absent.
