Kcchler's brother arrived at Turner Hall ou Tuesday afternoon, on a visit to hin brother. His carpet-bag was deposited up-staira in his room, and, with all its contents, was lost in the names. Spirits Spirited Away. On Tuesday night a considerable quantity of liquor, in demijohns, was removed from the bar of the Turner Hall, which mysteriously disappeared. The agents of the Underwriters, aud the proprietor, after diligent search yesterday, were unable to find it. Gallant. It will be seen by reference to the Legislative proceedings published this morning, that our good-looking Representative, Mr. Welborn, is moving in the General Assembly for female suffrage. He was always esteemed by the ladies a gallant gentleman. Ruhaqino. At least one hundred school children were engaged, yesterday evening, searching the ruins of the Turner Hall building for mils and other articles left from the conflagration. They were delving around and buzzing about like so many flics on a carcass. We doubt if the gat herings panned out very profitably. Heavy Loss. In addition to the loss of other property, Capt. Louis Koehler lost $400 in cash by the fire of Tuesday night. The most of it was money taken in at the masquerade on Monday night, and which he had placed in a bureau drawer up stairs, and, in the excitement that ensued, had not presence of mind sufficient to remove it. Delving. We counted fourteen boye yesterday delving in the ruins of So nn tag's store, burned about the close of last year. - Some of the boys were half-buried in the earth like a set of gofers. The result of their labors seemed to b nothing better than a lot or small nails, badly burned and half-melted, in the terrible conflagration. Public Meeting. It will be seen by a Call in this moruiog'a paper that quite a number of prominent citizens request a public meeting at the Court House on Saturday night, to petition the Legislature to pass a law regulating the salaries and allowances of County offieers, and " to adopt such measures as may be necessary to compel officers of this county lo pay into its treasury any public money which may be in their hands unlawfully, whether by appropriation by the Board of Commissioners or otherwise." . We give on the Becond page a summary of the bills now before the Legislature upon the subject of salaries of county officers, to which we refer the signers aud our readers.

School Examinations. The First Intermodiate department oF the Public Schools held its public exaaiioation yesterday, occupying the entire day. The" examination embraced reading, spelling and definincr, arithmetic, both mental and written, geography, and music. The advantage of the present system of grading in onr schools, whereby the game studio?, the same books, and the same lessons engage the attention of -the pupils of each room at the same time, has been made very apparent in the past half year since it was inaugurated. The examinations yesterday demonstrated its superiority over the old system in the more rapid advancement of the scholars and the greater ease and t.h which the teachers perforin their work. There' was a very general expression of approval on the part of parents and visitors at the exercises of the day in all the schools. We cannot do more this morning than append the several j ROLLS OF HONOR. ' ' First Intermediate, Uppr .Building Taught Br Misses Cherry and Spence. There was never a time, perhaps, in the history of this city, when the streets were in as filthy a coudition as at present. In (lie primeval days of Evansville, wheu Jus tice Warner presided over the Police Court?, and gravely derided that decency and iodeceney were relative and convertablc terms, it is doubtful ; if the streets presented such a spectacle as at present. The unimprovtd streets, which during the latter weeks of Autumn were cut down or filled up, are fathomless, or at least, " quarter twain,", and ou the bowldVred streets the mud is from two to six inches deep. Sycamore Street is ju.st about impassible. The people are beginning to cry out lor a reform, especially in street improvements. Wo used to have passable streets at an expense of $2T0 to .'00 per week, but since Hie expense has increased to $1,000 or $l,f.00 a week, mud is the prevailing commodity. The Turner Halt. Disaster Visit to tiib Ucins. The destruction of the Turner Hall, on Tuesday night, was tho most complete wo ever saw. There is not a dray load of debris left on the ground, except the brick foundations and the cdlir walls. About one-half the furn'.turc down stairs was saved. The insurance was as follows: On the building $2,500 at the agency of C.K.Drew. in the following offices: Lorillard, $1,200; Security, $1,500; at the agency of Decker & Bennett, to wit: $750 in the Manhattan and $750 in the Pacific. On the stock and furniture there was a policy in the Home of New Haven for $1,000, and onCapt.Koehlor's furniture $GO0 in the " Enterprise of Cincinnati. An Irrepaeablk Loss. The Leiderkranz Society were heavy losers by the fire of Tuesday night. They lost their entire wardrobe, including the costume for the Leiderkranz in China, and the Czar and Zimmerman. They also lost all their music, including some five operas which can only be replaced at great expense and much trouble. .They lost also their banners and flags and their fine piano. Their entire loss will amount, it is be lieved, to fully $1,500. We hope that an effort will at once be made on the part of our citizens to . make up a portion of this loss. Stabbing Afpaie. John Brannon, an engineer on theO. & M. Rail road, was severely stabbed at Vincenncs on Tuesday evening by a brakesman named Murray. A quarrel had previously existed between the parties. On Tuesday evening they met in a saloon, and Murray invited Brannon to drink with him, which the latter declined. He then asked him to loan him some money, which he refused to do. A quarrel ensued, and Braonou was severely stabbed. Filling Cisterns. An engine was set at the margin of the river yesterday for the purpose of filling the cisterns that had been exhausted by the engines at the nre Tuesday night. This fact demonstrates the absolute necessity of water works, -which, it' properly constructed, would do away with the necessity of filling cisterns, if not with the use of fire engines. Perambulating Small-Pox. Yesterday, an Ethiopian was perambulating the streets of the city in search of Chris. Hedderich, Town ship Trustee. Chris, met him in lront of the Court House, and at once discovered that the son of Ham was Pretty well sprinkled with the smallpox, and had chalked upon his hat the inscription, "Small-Pox." He was sent to the Pest House with dispatch. Another case of small-pox u negro was discovered yesterday and eent to tho Pest House. The average number of cases at the Pest House is geaeraliy five. No exeitej ment on the subject exists in the city.

Recorder's Court. - There was but a moderate run of custom in the Recorder's Court yesterday, but what little was done, was generally cash business. Ann Early and Harriet Simn, two of llamburtrcr's nrotices. got into a fight, and both came out with' black eyes. They were introduced to His Honor, who requested them to donate $3 23 each, pro bono puhlico. Sims passed over a part of the "rhino," and secured the balance. , Early was short, and concluded to board a while at Cochran's headquarters. Philip Pruden has had a thought less habit of leaving a goods box on the sidewalk in front of his premises, contrary to the ordinance in such cases made and provided. It chanced that both sides of it, tumbled over it. A complaint was lodged against the owner yesterday, and he was required to pay $3 25, which will lead him to take better care of his boxe3 in the future. , Joseph Kuiser, fatigued by his ex ertions in witnessing the fire on Tues day night, got too highly stimulated on roasting car juice, and was asked for $5 75, and this closed operations for the day. Whose Business Is It ? Ever since - the Opera House has been opened, it has been a uniform practice, when there wa3 a performance goiug on, of a large number of small boys and half-grown lads to assemble on the stairs, and create a noise and disturbance running noisily down when the door-keeper appears, and, at other times, amusing themselves by kicking the glass out of the steps. The question is, whose duty is it to preserve order on the stairs and at the main entrance ? The Opera House Company pay license, and the assemblies that gather there are law ful assemblies, and, it is supposed by some, that it is the duly of the city authorities to protect them against disturbance or annoyance. - From tie fact that we never see any policemen about, we infer that the city authorities think differently. In other cities we never fail to find two or more policemen at the front eijtratice to the theatres or Opera House, and neither boys or men are permitted to stand willun (be en trance or around the door, unless they sire going in. We make these sug gestions in the hope that some atten tion will be giveu to the matter, and that order may be preserved. (iltKAT MFFKCTS FROM LlTTLE Caii'sk.s. The presenee oi'a druukeu man in the Opera House la?t nighty eatue well uigh causing a stampede, whii-h would, no doubt, have resulted in serious consequences. He had managed to get in without betraying his condition, but presently became annoying. to those near him. The door-keeper and ushers tried to in duce him to be quiet, but he became worse, and theu they ejected him, and very properly too. This operation caused a little noise, as the fellow caught the door as he was heaved out, and caused it to rattle. Tin .1 1 r r v nca tuo alarm ot lire was given on iuestiay night, the light shone so brightly into the win dows of the Opera House, aud many supposing the building was on fire, a perfect panic ensued, and it was some time before the excitement was abated. The noise caused by ejecting the drunken man last night, coupled with the scene the night before, inclined tho audience to be more easily fright ened, and at least two-thirds of all present at once rose to their feet, and but for the presence of mind of a few who called out loudly that nothing was the matter except a slight dis turbance at the door, a fearful scene might have been the result. It is wise for people to keep cool on all occasions, but especially in a crowded auditorium or an Opera house, as a precipitate rush to avoid danger, even did it exist, is but to pre cipitate the audience into worse dan ger oftentimes. The door-keeper, in future, should carefully guard against the admission of any one under the influence oi liquor. A Disgusting Scene. Large crowds of people were drawn together yesterday by the appearance of a drunken woman on the wharf and afterwards on First Street. She went aboard one of the Henderson packets, and was with difficulty ejected. She next drew the crowd to First Street, between Main and Sycamore, where she gave a varied exhibition of pantomime recitations and practical demonstrations, including the display of a huge waterfall. A policeman at last caught sight of the crowd and asked her to take his arm, a proposi tion she rejected with proud disdain, but walked along at arm's length from him. We could not ascertain who she was, though it was said that her name was Eggs the same woman who was before the Kecordcr a few days since. Heal Estate Appraiser.- Moaes Aiken yesterday tendered his writteu resignation as Ileal Estate Appraiser to Auditor Birch, and Mr. John Greek was appointed to fill the vacancy. As nc m c 1 :t .... -.. iur. ixih.eu luiiuu iL ltiootupatibia witn 1 hia other duties to fill the office with proper fidelity, it id a matter of congratulation to all tax-payers to know that so experienced and capable a man as Mr. (Jreek has consented to discharge the important daties. It is an oilice of responsibility, and it ia a matter of much concern to property holders that it he well done. We believe Mr. dreek is just the man to accomplish tho work satisfactorily. It will be seen by local notice that the deputy appraisers are called to meet to-day to confer with tho Appraiser. The work will be pushed iup without delay.
