TUESDAY.. .FEBRUAKY ,!. An Irritable Newspaper. ' 'We have been so unfortunate as to again offend the New Albany Commercial. Our offenses in this partie.lr seem to be multiplying at an alarming rate. We re at a Iws to know how to conduct the JotmNAL so -. k knimoaity of: our irnU3 LO H -,, V table cotemporary. inaiviuuiia r always quic -k to resent msuivs where none are intended, are very un pleasant members of community. The same may be said of newspapers man-:r-,-;-,, cmllar rtp.Anlaritie?.' We do
- x - r , not know how we can keep on good f (. Wrma ' with our neig-bdr of the village at the Falls, except by disregarding his ebullitions of passion, ascrib ing them to an irritableness arising from what he regards as a want of ap- : ' trfteiation.' on our part, of his import-
' ance. " Really we have a most exalted
" ': opinioD of our little "neighbor's pon
derosity. We think tne commercial.
1 " ' the heftiest six by nine newspaper on
our exchange list. We trust this can did confession of appreciation on our part, will extract tome of the venom iwith which it is in the. habit of criti
cising our paper. Our last , offense is found , in. the ; , suggestion that we made some time -. ago, that New Albany had gone into V . Ihe railroad meeting business quite " extensively of late; that it had three or four gigantic railroad enterprises on foot, while one of its roads, already
, ' in existence, was about to be aban
... doned. or. at least, was constantly
! changing hands. The Commercial '" ! 'says' this is about as near the truth as we generally get when speaking of New Albany; Then,' to show' how much we missed the mark, it makes the following statement: j . There is not the slightest probabil-
fcity that Jhe Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Ilailroad will ;be abandoned; for there is not the slightest probability that the parties who would h; i abandon a portion of it will bo able . to purchase it at the mortgage fore closcresale in April next. If Henry , M, Lord could get possession of the ' road be would doubtless abandon a Eortion of it. Bat Henry -M. Lord as about played out financially and as a railroad man in Indiana, and
i there is not the slightest probability of his purchasing the road. In this -much . the malice of the Evansville ' Jotjbnal will go ungratified. 5 ' The JocbnaIi is equally guilty ol misrepresentation in saying that this road " it constantly changing hands." The bondholders now have possession of the road, and have had for the past ten or more years- , They foreclosed their mortgage upon the road and will sell it. There is every reason to believe they will purchase it at the sale, and as the road throughout its entire length is in first class condi- . tion, stocked with first class looomo- " lives, passenger coaches, and freight cars, they will operate it as a first class road, energetically and successfully. , . If Henry M. Lord who is pretty successful in getting hold of roads n hen he has a mind to gets possession of the road, says the Commercial, he will doubtless abandon a portion ef it. So there i3 at least one contingency ia which the New Albany end of the road may be abandoned. The road is not constantly changing ; hands, says the Commercials and then it '! gravely announces still another change in the same paragraph.- Sa gacious little paper! The ; road is to sold by the bondholders, who may . bny it in. But suppose 'Henry M. : Lord buys it in at that sale ? Horrors! - ;.; " I ' The Commercial ascribes our hostility to the New Albany, Mt. Carmel 45 St. Louis Road to alarm. In the first place we are not hostile to tbe it. road. We would like- to have it constructed. Therefore we are hot alarmed in the slightest. What we desire is never alarming. ', " C v : But, while on this point, we may gently inquire, if we can do so without arousing the ire of the Commercial, is not all the talk and fuss about the New Albany and Terra . Haute, 4he New Albany and Vincennes Roads the result of an alarm felt by New Albany and Louisville as to the effect the completion of the road front this point to Nashville, will have upon ' the trade of the Northwest ? It is a fixed fact that the E. & C. Road will ' ba extended north until it connects directly with Chicago. Then will there be an air-line from Chicago to the Oulf through Evansville, and the great produce crops of the Northwest will seek a Southern market over that I'.ne. -The New Albany projects are ojly frantic efforts to divert that produce through Louisville instead of Laving it take the natural channel through Evansville. But the Terns Haute and Vincennes Roads will not accomplish the object. The Big bridge, while it may make New Albany a suburb of Louisville, will not draw business from this point. We say, again, to New Albany, hurry up your Railroads, for every railroad that develops the country contiguous to our city, adds greatly to its prosperity. But do not accuse U3 of fearing what we desire, or being alarmed at what we wish to take place. Cheap Advertising. There seems to be a growing desire among the people for a cheap advertising medium by which they may make their wants known. There are a multitude of small, yet vexatious, annoyances wtucn might be disposed of by one insertion of a three or five line advertisement in a newspaper of extensive circulation, and yt for ,want of suchublicity are not removed for days if not weeks. Persons wanting situations often seek for days the desired employment, while at the same time many vacant situations are actually waiting for persons to fill tbem., In both cases a three or five line advertisement would have made known these wants respectively, and
brought the employee Jn contact
wi;b the employtaeot.' Especially does this apply to this stn'aljer, waDts of life. We have tapwfi ladjes ffnrch for weeks in our city for female help, while at the same time good girls were going from house to bouse inquiring for work. In such instances much Jtime . and. vexation might, have,, been, ved . by inserting a three or five line advertisement in the Journal.; ,u ,t "j i ,i: ',' '.' :. t We need hardly say that the Jotjbnal is by far the best mediumjfor advertisements of this character. It not only is seen and read by nearly every family in the city, but hasan extensive circulation in the various sur rounding towns. It goes more largely than any, other paper into, the hands of those who have money to spend, and are or will be purchasers for whatever our merchant' have to sell or f our manufacturers make. Oars are real readers, people of substance. 1 In order to accommodate a large class of persons who might be advertisers, we have concluded ;to follow the example of many of j our . co temporaries aLd giv advertisements of three lines or! lees -one insertion' fof TIIIIITY CENTS., jJJyery . additional line wlll " be charged at the rate of ten ce'TS fori each in sertion! "We have have set apart, for advertisements of this chaiac"tr1he first column .00 the fourth page, or so much of it as may be required., iThLj is , the most . conspicuous column , in the paper. .While we are. aware that in our ciiy, employers 'and employees have not become accustomed to seek each other through the columns of a newspaper, as in large cities, we have determined on affording them the op portunity of doing bo. ....! '.v'j On this question pf"sdvertising, wd find' Home very sensible remarks in the Pittsburg Commercial, which, we copy, and commend to the thoughtful attention of our readers: ! ; ' ' As to the manner of advertising, it will be observed that in studiuiR economy our . dealers, manufacturers. real estate men, and nearly every class that want to buy or sell something, are avaihnrtaemselvesof the induce ment held out on the first pige of the Commercial, where for the small sum of THIIlTi CENTS they i can pro cure tie insertion of ad advertisement of three lines, end longer oues at the same rate. - froperly written, ' three lines wilt suffice to make known the wants of almost any seller or pnr chaser. If greater space is needed. the charge, iu all conscience, is cheap enough. - luare is a great secret' in inserting' an advertisement! so as to accomplish the advertiser's object. A few words, properly chosen, will do far more than a great many in the usual way. Sach advertisements are eagerly read we venture to say no part or our paper is read more closely than the advertising columns on the first page. ; The popular notion is that ad vertisers should make a spread to eatch the eye of the public. So they should, perhaps, but there is a way to do it. To gain the eye of the public it is true, is what is w.inted, and from long observation, and the experience in tnose cities wnere advertising is the business man a chief agency, we can say that the only true way for the merchant, great or small, ia to make frequent change of his notices, and insert them in that part of the paper where the reader is accustomed . to look for fresh announcements. Money may be advantageously expended or virtually thrown away ; and we . think wo could inhtance cases- where dealers have expended fifty or one hun dred dollars which, j through lack of tact, was' not "worth half these amounts judiciously expended: . Wc have rarelyt eve known a; dealer to advertise his business to the amount of fifty dollars but he advanced to one hundred dollars, and so on, just as he would enlarge his store or shop as his business increased. Publishers prefer a comparatively few adventures at rates according to the advantages of position and style. The !thio2 becomes select and valuable. When an advertisement becomes dead matter it' is comparatively valueless, j Frequent renewal, in conspicuous places, is tbe part. of wisdom. .'It is cheaper to spend one. ten or one hundred dollars in securing freshness than half or quarter of these amounts spent in putting- in advertisements to stand among a score of others that people soon cease to regard. There is no economy in contracting for a given space lor a long time, unless it is for certain manufacturer's and profession al cards, specialties that form an ex ception. Ihe merchant who selects his paper, writes carefully his notices, determines the number of times he will print, and pays the rates to secure the best place, has eot on the right road. He will find himself in tne end paying perhaps twice or thrice what he paid under the con-, tract system, so common, and by which the advertiser realizes iu only a small degree the object he has in view. But he will be more than satisfied. . ' IXDIAXAI'OLIS IiETTER. Legislative Work Election Contest McFadla, the Irrepressible U.K. Consolidation Tour to Terre Haute. Indiana pous, February 4, 18C9. Editors Journal: The legislative machine is grinding exceedingly slow, and, occasionally, like the fabled mills of the gods, it grinds exceedingly fine. Plainly, half of the session is gone, and comparatively little has yet been accomplished it might be summed up in a dozen lines. A Senator has been elected, a few Court bills have been passed, an appropriation bill for legislative expenses, the Soldiers' Home, at Knightstown, visited, and an election contest has been decided. This last affair took up two days, and excited a considerable amount of interest, both in and out of the General Assembly. The facts are briefly these : Mr. Peale (Dem.) was elected from Laporte and Starke Counties, by a decided majority, to the Lower House, and occupied his seat at the beginning of the session. However, it transpired that in May, 18G5, he began a four years' term of service as a Justice of the Peace, but soon threw it aside and forgot all about the little matter, it seems, as also did his friends. Our State Constitution very plainly says that an election to a "judicial office," disqualifies a man from holding " any other than a judicial office during the term for which he was so elected." This little fact was deemed so important that even Mr. Peale's Democratic
bretbjen eaid openly " that he had no right whatever to a seat inXhe Legislature," which of itself shows him to be a man of small calibre mentally, and of very little use anywhere except that in voting lie would count one, elfe he would never have consented to
be " such a party tool. The Demo crats, however, made a stubborn fight over the contest, in the effori to have a vacancy, declared-and a. new election ordered. Coffroth mndo a two hours' speech," in favor of this proposition, in which he used all the arts of pophlstry and all the iorensi skill . ol which he is such a consummate master. But all in vain ' Judge Buskirk,1 in a speech "of"6ne yhour and a quarter, tore away1 the web of sophistry so artfully woven, parried with, a mas terly hand the well aimed blows of his antagonist, and dealt others in return so surely and certainly that when he closed there remained but little to.- be said.y on . either side.. ; However, Judge : McFadin of Cass County, the irrepressible, as 111" .'tvaaw tne boys ,cau mm, was "rued all over and could hold in no lontrer. So when Mr.'.Buskirk. sat down, he got the floor,, and such a campaign stump speech about Greeley and Sum ner, and the INew -York Tribune, and Abnsnnest3 generally, is very seldom heard. Loosing 1 his , temper completely, he ranted and fumed until his Democratic friends, were, con strained to call him to order. His pctulent wit frequently broueht down the house-with roars' of laughter which he thought no doubt was an evidence of their appreciation of his speeph. Finally, as, the day 'waned toward its by a- strict party vote (with an exception or two), the sitting member (fllr. Jreale;c was ousted, and Mr.. Realty.; his opponent, was duly eworn in to nil nis place 1.. , '-A great number .of bills for amending the registry, law have been intro duced,' but nothing definite has yet been done. A bill to repeal all laws coneemiDsrliaaor selling was promptly tabled ; a lew days ago in the HouseT and no doubt the present statute will remain intact, or nearly, so, in that particular.! ! ., : j, j ' The Senate has a bill concerning the consolidation of railroads, of which the chief - provision is, " that under special charters, shall consolid ate, those charters are1 void, and tee neweomDanv must , come under the general railroad laws of the " State. The bill includes, also, those which have already, as well as those read which consolidate hereatter. It will become a law. probably,. .'
