Skiff & Gatlord's Minstrels. ' To-night Skiff & Gaylord s Minstrels rea-pjicar at the Opera House, for one - night only. This troupe enjoy a well earned and world-wide reputation, and combine-with their talents as musicians, the characteristics of gentlemen. Among Jthe arrivals by Saturday night's train were George Foster, Jisq of Foster, Gwya & Co., . New York, and Col. Thomas John - - eon, connected, with the house of Shaw, Barbour &UCo., Cincinnati. These gentlemen are both, old citi zens of XiVansville, and tneir many friends will be glad to meet them in their old home. - Yousa Men's Prater Meeting. The young men's prayer meetings, which have been attended with so much interest during the past two weeks, will be oontinued this week. Thb morning it will ; be held in the Vine Street Church; to-morrow mornins io the Zlon Church; on Wednes day ia the German Methodist Church, and on Thursday in the , Walnut Street Church. All are invited to attend.- ' - Union Prater Mebxtno. Daring the week of prayer held in January last by . the various b ranches of. the Presbyterian church in, .this city, it was determined to hold one Union prayer meeting each month through out the year. Agreeably to this reso lution the meetinz for February will be held in the Cumberland Presbyte rian Church on Tuesday evening, to waicn au are invited. Heavt IIacuno. On Saturday a second effort was made to remove the huge blocks of marble that have for some time past obstructed the wharf. One , of the largest was, after much , labor and difficulty, loaded on a low truck wagon, and then snaked up the wharf by means of blocks and tackle a team of farm horsos being used in lieu of a capstan. The process was slow one, but success vindicates its adoption. The heaviest blocks of marble weigh nearly six tons, we are ioiu, ana are very valuable.

The report of the Secre-, tary and Treasurer, Capt. W. Turner,' gave quito an interesting review of the operations of the School for the past year, with some valuable -sugges-j ions as to the future " work to " Lo accomplished.- The . Miracles Jo f Christ were recited by different members of the school, with 'very ' happj effect, and with .more than the' usuaj distinctness and spuiL; Tho most attractive feature of the exereises was an object singing exercise : hy ' Miss Woodbury's , infant class. ; After a brief address by Professor Willett; a number ot prize Biblos" and gift: books were presented to such as had been perfect ia their recitations, or present every Sabbath of the year A very neat printed programme' wa distributed throughout the audience embracing the Order of Exercises the Roll of Honor of the Scholars, 'a; summary of the. Secretary's and Treasurer's report, and a list of the classes and missionary titles. Tho school enters upon a new. year .with bright prospects for usefulness and prosperity. " ' " - ' j Deploying as Skirmishers. Th$ competition between the Henderson; packets is becoming quite lively, anc "strategy, my boy,' nne strategy, being resorted ' to, to secure freigh and passengers. The following wil illustrate: On Friday night lust the officers 1 of both "the packets learned that there were two hoad of cattle ari one or two passengers to be had running down to a warehouse soma mile and a half below the city, an4 each determined to se-jure, ths prizi by slipping quietly down, at early dawn, and before the other could get steam upl . Just before daylight the Sallie V. slipped her cable and without the tinkling of a bell, dropped out from shore and made off at full speod - for. the lower warehouse. So quiet were her-movements made.'and with suph celerity, that Capt. Martin and.Hoon .Miller,, tha pilot, were left ashore and had to follow in a skiff. The Mollie Norton slipped out quietly a moment , later, and also; ran down to uecure the coveted freight and pa sengers, and in order to make it doubly sure, tlie par-keeper ol the iorttn raorted to the strategy of " deploring as skirmishers," to use the language of a distinguished army surgeon, and so started out from the river in : the direction he supposed the cattle and the passengers would come. The hour was an early one, the neighbor hood a strange one, and as Field cautiously threaded his way through the dim shadows of giay morning, he was somewhat startled to find a man or a boy picketiog each fence corner along the lane, having been previously 'sent out or deplored a3 skirmishers" by tho Sallic V.whieh Bueceededin secur ing tho freight. ' Field cays he will go down the night before, on the pext occasion of the kind, and .picket the whole shore himself alone. 1 hough the competition is warm, the most friendly relations, we are g'.ad to say, exist between the crews ot the com peting boats. . ' 1 ! The First Bicycle. The first two-wheeled velocipede made its appearance on the streets of our city on Saturday, and created a great ftarore. t was built at the wagon' makers' shep of J. B. Green & Son, and is a very substantial machine, though susceptible of eonsiderablo improvement in style and finish. W. IT. Hugo, ol New Harmony, exhibited; it to' the astonished multitudes, who followed him with all the eager attention they ..... - Ja1- ' . - ? ' exhibit on occasions oi iae proeessiou of a circus and animal f.hbw, through the streets. The rider managed it with considerable dexterity and address, though the bicycle exhibited an obstinacy at turnine corners that could not be overcome, always ; in sisting on going to the left, and obsti nately refusing to turn to the right, The rider perspired, freely, which in dicated that but for the name of rid ing, it would have been les3 wearisome to walk. We are told that it was out for an airing again on Sunday mornJnc and attracted a large crowd of small boys, who should have been at Sunday-School. It is said, by the way. that there are three hundred ve locipedes nowin daily use in New York (Jity, and it is expected that the numberwill soon be increased to three thousand. ' One manufacturer is en gaged on an improvement - that will enable the rider more easily to propel the vehicle. Lost and Found. Some ten days or two- weeks ago; Joe Mayers, a for mer attache of Skiff & Gaylord's Minstrels.' who had ; been , dismissed the Company, spirited away a' favorite dog, to which the whole Company were greatly attached. . The Chief of Police, of this city, was telegraphed to look for the dog on the.Darlinsr, where he was found, and handed over to Capt. Travis, of this city, for safe keeping,. As soon as the band of the Minstrels struck up last' night the dbg rushed aboard, and his expres sions of delight were thrilling in the cxtreme.':, ; T ". ' ."' !
