TUESDAY. .FEBRUARY 2, l. Osr Friday night a house in Mr. Auburn, near-Cincinnati, was blown down by the wind, and the family, buried in -the ? ruins. Ono -little boy was killed. His mother, was still living when extricated from tho roina. buf so-badly injured that her recovery i impossible. .The futhsr, Mr. David VANDsaaaiFP,, was also severely hurt, but aot dangerously. ,;v TSK Indianapolia Journal rejoiceth greatly over tho failure of tho Erie Railroad monopoly to lease the Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central Railroad,' and extends it-! Sympathy to Cincinnati in being placed at the mercy of Jay Gould & Fisk. The people of tho West, generally, will rejoice at this failure to combine all the railroad interests of the country under one management aui that not an honest one' by any mean9. Had the New York' railroal monpoYuU suoceeded id their undertakings,' the' only resource - left the people would haye bieolesislati an, which is alreaiyio- progress iu .Illinois and some other Statea. Protection. . We print' this morningv a t lengthy article from the - Boston Journal showing the operation of the Tariff in making dear food.' Tha' Journal was a Whig paper when that party was iD existence, and has always favored protective, tariffs. ,; We dare say it is still ia favor of, protection to; the. New England f4 .inanufactiring 'j, interests. But it sensibly pbjacts : tow Jhf; f duties by which a bushel of potatoes that the Boston laborers and artisans ought to buy at fifty cents is made to cost them cue dollar ami twenty cents. The same condition of things governs the price of fuel. ',; . , ' The truth is, the high tariff stems to be an obstacle in the way of tevery enterprise, and ' Will not be much longer tolerated : by the 'people. - It builds up the few at the expense of the many, as i el early -demonstrated by Secretary Wells,' in his admirable report. The way. this is done is no lemgee a mystery. ; -A53 a 1 sample, we copy the following paragraph from the New- York Pptl: , t h 1 f i rf ' The amazing rapacity of-the monopolists who are robbirfg the people under tho epeciou3 cry of "protection" is illustrated in many different ways by Mr-Wells in his recent report Mr" Wells is a protectionist himself, but he is disgusted with the extravagant demands of the monopolists, who are continually clamoring for more protection, while they are already gathering immense tributes from the . industry of, the country. We have already referred to the case of tho Onondaga. Salt Company; but this is only one of many similar instances. :m For example, in the case of the iron interest, which is perpetually howling for more protection, Mr. .Wells states that "the returns of one se i of furnaces in" one of the Middle S'.ites, communicated to the commies; ener, shows a yearly product of 33,000 tuns on a capital of 160,000, sold ii a profit of from $10 to $13 per tun. That is to say, on a capital of $-160,000 a yearly profit of from $330,000 to 150,000 has been made out of the people, on one of the necessaries of life, by the help of the tariff.' r ;- The signs are all encouraging fir a repeal of the monopolizing features of the : present tariff, , by s6 reducing duties as to bring foreign goods and products into competition with our " wealth manufacturing c establish ments. When such', orthodox Whig papers as the Boston Journal' and Cincinnati GazeUe begin to doubt the correctness' of. a Iligh Protective Tariff policy, its abandonment is not far off in the future. '. The people of the WeBt almost unanimously demand a reduction of duties, and they are now competent;. to, enforce their demands if they choose to do so. . .' ' " WlLL Cumback disbursed sixty millions of dollars darin? the war, . and came out so poor in purse that be had to borrow money to pay his expenses in the late campaign." ' ; " The above is going the rounds cf the Cumback press with a persistence worthy of a better cause. No one ever supposed that Cumback; stole anything, and these swift witnesses in his behalf are doing him more harm '. than good. Indianapolis Mirror. Were Mr. Cumback as " corrupt " as yon and others have attested, he would, in all probability, have used his advantages and accumulated sum cient money to have purchased the eighteen bolting Republicans and most of their friends. A bill has been introduced into the State Legislature prohibiting the selling of articles of food by weight of spring balances. That will affect some of our dealers. The New Harmony people subscribed G,400 to the Mt. Vernon & Grayville Railroad at their first meeting. Many of the Indianapolis preachers devoted a part of their last Sunday service to delivering lectures on temperance. Mas. Clem is confined in a cell which is infested with vermin. Miss Eliz v Stevenson, of Dan ville, was found lying dead in the Rockville road, near Danville, last Tuesday momicg, with the horse she had been riding lying across her lower extremities,5 - while her body was between the horse 's fore legs. 'Che- manner of her death is unknown, I; t it is eonjectured that the horse str.nibled and fell, throwing the lady, and that the bridal rein became entangled in her riding habit, so that the horse could not get up. She may have been killed by the efforts of the horse to fet up, though the doctors thought no ones were broken. To the Union Eepnblican Soldiers of , the Second Congressional District . of Kentucky. As Chairman of the Congressional District Committee, and after consultation with prominent individuals acting with ' the Republican Soldiers' Association of Kentucky, I hereby announce, to all persons residing in this Congressional District who were soldiers of the Union army during the late war, and. who still t cherish the principles for which they then fought, that a Convention will be held in Greenville, - Kentucky, on Tuesdiy, the 9th day of February, 1SG9, in order to organize ourselves and perfect our relations with the Stato-organization, the objects of, which are to substantially'provide means for our mutual aid and protection, and to assist such of our comrades as, from disabilities incurred during the wa, are not capable of earning an honest and competent livelihood. All ex-soldiers of the District who are friendly to the cause are urged to attend. John Feland, Chairman Cone. Committee. Ilopkbisville, Ky., Jan. 20, 1SG9. Why Is Food so Dear Why do wc PajSucb Prices for Gas and uel? These .questions were discussed a few evenings since at the Social Science, meeting, and some interesting facts were elicited in the debate. , One gentleman described his visit to a starch mill in the. country, which was supplied with potatoes at the time-honored price 01 New England twenty five cents a bushel. He toll the proprietor that he had several little starch mills around his table in Boston, and asked why he could not have a supply at the same price, and was told that the railway charges were too high for profit; while another gentleman gave the prices in the British Provinces, and showed the operation of the war duties and a debased currency in raising the prices. Ia it not timo that some steps were taken to restore peace prices for such essential articles of food, and to lower the cost of gas and fuel? Our legislators do not seem to realize that the war is over. Let us trace the potato to its origin in the Provinces. There, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is the fertile Island of Prince Wdward, fifty per cent, larger than Long Island, with a fertile soil, without a stone on its surface, and a climate cooler and moister than our own, admirably adapted to grass, oats and potatoes. While the cold and rocky soil round Boston, in a drier climate, yields on the average less than a hundred bushels of potatoes to the acre, here is an Island, every acre cf which can be cultivated, so intersected by inlets and rivers that every farm is within an average distance of three miles from navigable waters, and is easily accessible. The average yield of an acre of this cheap land, worth from five to ten dollars per acre, is three fold the yield of our dear land near our seaports, for two hundred and fifty bushels to the acre is but an ordinary crop. m The farmer of the Island can grow rich by selling at twenty-five cents the bushel, and can contract for their delivery and sale at three-eights of a aonar at the pier in JJostoo ; but here ue cueouniers hl9 first it : th 011 ttx7 Here he is met bv n nni;o fK tnn 1 : vmiua, wau invites mm to pay a duty of twenty-five cents a bushel I

Drime eoS. wiicii in us (limes up tn? cost 10 five-eights of a doltar in gld, or to nearly seven-eights of a dollar ia currency, and a cent or two more for wharfage curries the price to o'lu'hty-tive-conts tho bushel. The retiiler, as he conies to the vcssol, says hfrcan buy atrthisr rate from t lie ear? coming from the West, and he must have thirty per cent, to cover cartage, delivery, los by frost and decay and danger in the fall in prica of gold, before he sells at one dollar and tiltecn cents to one dollar and twenty cents to his customers. W ith such results and the rifck of navigation before him, the Islander prefers to fat ten his swmo with the mealy potato we should prefer to the estern product, and we lose both ways. First, a cheap and necessary article of subsistence, and then our commissions on the sale of provisions, while the vv estern farmer who may send" us the potatoes, resigns most of his advance to the railway, and tho railway pays it over in the shape of taxes to the Government, or in wages enhanced by a costly food and a depreciated currency.. The Acadian shores of Nova Scotia produce choice potatoes the famous blue noses in abundance and the Island of Prince Edward could easily supply the whole Atlantic coast with this edible at forty cents per bushel, and would take its pay in our productions, and the grocers' profit of thirty per cent, would carry the retail price to but tttv-tnree cents in gold. The only impediments in the way are tho duty and tne currency. The Government can spare the duty for two reasons: First, it yields no revenue. Second, we have a surplus of revenue to the extent, as Mr. Wells says, of at least seventyfive million dollars. The duty is merely prohibitory. It merely raises the freight of the railway, and gives no encouragement to our farmers, and the railway tax should itself be re Dialed. The railway tax of five per cent.' on net receipts, and two and one-half on gros3 receipts, with the war duties on iron and eteel. have carried up the cost of railway transportation from htty per cent; on gross earnings be tore tne war, to seventy per cent, on these earnings more than forty per cent, increase and thus contributed to the cost of the necessaries of life How is it wi'.h fuel? The rivers and inlets of the Provinces are fringed with wood, easily accessible, but our tariff excludes most of it, by a duty of twenty per cent., and our poor, who suffer from the severity of climate, and cannot anord to buy taxed potatoes and herring, are obliged to resort to the station house to warm their stom achs with a bowl or dole of soup. Around a great portion of Nova Scotia the wooded bluffs are underlaid with coal in veins of twelve to thirty-six feet diameter, which tin be placed on ship board at a cost without profit, of one dollar and a quarter per ton, which can be sent to Boston for two dollars and a half per ton. But here it i: met by a duty of one dollar and a quarter, or an hundred per ceut which, with the wharfage and percentage on cost and duty, carry it up to five dollars and a quarter a ton in gold or seven dollars a ton in currency, and when to this we add the cartage and retailcr'u profits at current rates, the price, before it reaches the consumer, carried up from one dollar and a quarter to nine dollars a ton. Let us strike off the dutywbich is destroying the trade and ruining the mines owned chiefly by our people, who -have furniahad capital to open them, aud dispense with the costlj' premium on gold. If we do this, and bring down, as we may, and have done in past times, the cost of Coal at our fliers to the London price of four dolars and a quarter per ton, we may have gas at little more than London prices, or less than one-half of current rates. All we have to do i3 to return to gold and repeal imposts entirely unnecessary on gas and coal. Hoston Journal.
