Main Street presented an unusually busy aspect yesterd"y. ; During a great portion of the day the sidewalks w?re thronged with people. Discontinued. The Mayor's Court has been discontinued. What few cases are to be adjudicated by authority from the city go through the regular channel now. Don't Forget. Let no Hepubli- . can forget that the Boards of Regis try willsit at the various places for voting, on Monday nexi. All should register. It is important. . Petty Thieving. Some thief stole a lot of carpet filling from the stable of Mr. Philip Euler, yesterday. There was quite a quantity of.it. It was taken from the stable by the rear entrance. - JST The Sociabb by the young ladies of the Walnut Street Church to-morrow evening promises to be one of the most attractive entertainments of the season. The young people of tho city especially will be out in force Bank Officeb.3. Under the new Directory, tho officers of the Merchants' National Bank are C. R. Bement, President; Matthew Ilenning, Vice President; and J. August Lemcke, Cashier. A good corps of officers. . I'ebsonal. Jesse W. Laird, of Rqskpor, ,W. J. Hargrave, W. P. Hudson, and George L. Masters, of Boonville, were in the city last night. Captain John (Jilbeit, of Golconda, Illinois, and Captain Jim Webb, of pycuaburg, Kentucky, were in the ' city yesterday. Ooino East. -There is a vast quantity of corn now going East. Every up river boat comes lull, and .large quantities are landed here and then forwarded by rail. The Tennessee River packets bring much corn from that classic stream. Not the same Bacon. The Bacon whose house was burglariously entered in Madisonville a few nichts since, is not our worthy friend, Robert A. Bacon, Assistant Superintendent of the Evansville, Henderson & Nashville : Railroad. Our informant was mistaken in the man. Decease of a Venerable Lady. Mrs. Susannah Reilly, the venerable mother of our fellow-townsmen. Win. and Osborne Reilly, died at her home iu Armagh, Ireland, on the 4th inst.4 at the advanced age of eighty-four years. Her- sons have just, received the melancholy intelligence. ,. . Drowned Mules. Mr.' Duke, of Tennessee, who came down with a lot of mules on the Rose Hi te last night, had nineteen mules and one horse on the Le Claire when she . sunk. Of the twenty head of stock' :only four mules were Bayed. He has another lot on board, which he will ship today on the Lewellin. He says about forty head of horses and mules were lost by that disaster. Shooting a Hou. a fat hog escaped from its owner yesterday, and after a fruitless effort to capture or drive it back the owner got Captain Cochrane, Chief of Police, to shoot it with his revolver, which he did the second shot striking fair in the forehead, when the throat of his hogship was, cut," and he was hauled off on a dray." The report of the pistol - attracted a Urge crowd, many supposing, as they saw others running to the wharf, that a man had been shot.
-Iu tho Court of Common Phss yesterday the case of Robert Feathovstone vs. John Clark and Sarah Clark, Ttas taken up. This is a ease in which t appeared a note bad been given by Clark to Featherstone for the sum of $1,400. and to secure tke note, mortgage had been given on property. The note was lost. The decision of the Court was that a new note showld be given by Clark, and a new mortgage executed. John Adams, on charge of larceny, was sentenced to ono year's imprisonment in tbo State's prison. A verdict of guilty waa rendered day before yesterday, and yesterday the pentence was passed. In this rase a motion for a new trial, which had been made, was withdrawn. Mary Ilibber, who, it will "be remembered, was arrosted some time pineo on charge of Stealing a washtub, had a hearing and was sentenced to imprisonment in the county jail for thirty days. Henry Norton, who, it will also be lemembered, was arrested pome time since on charge of stealing a game eoek, had a hearing. Trial by jury. Verdict, not guilty. Norton put in as a plea that some one had givea him tho game cock on the street while Lo himself was in a state of iufoxication, and that ho had nor idea of appropriating tho chantacicer to his own use. lie will perhaps bo a little mora cautious in future, and not allow himself to be imposed upon as he stated he was. 'Intoxicating whisky will havo a multitade of sins to answer for in the Great Day. ' " Outrageous. Last Saturday an old negro man, who resides iu Independence, came to the city on some business, and when returning to his home was set upon in Independence by a lot of white men, j who began annoying .him in every wajMhcy could. The u gro boro it all patiently, not resenting anything said or done to him, and when at last he had got looso from his tormentors and was passing on, some of Hie white men commenced to throw stones" at him., He was ntruck Feveral times and pretty severely bruised and lamed also. Such conduct deserves punishment, and it is hoped those engaged in the. outrage may be brought to justice. The affair was witnessed by many of the citizens of Independence, who are indignant at such misconduct. To have interfered in the negro's behalf would have been to have involved "themselves in the trouble with those fellows. Overboard. Yesterday morning as a young man of considerable ponderosity attempted to step from the bow of a steamer on to;the wharlbo.it he mistook the distance and stepped into the river, on the outside. As lie rose to the surface, he ' exclaimed in the language of a hero in Neal's Char-, coal Sketches, "Ahoy there! The boat is blown up and those who arc not biled are drowned, and those that can't swim must tread water! Where are, your splatter-docks?" He wus hauled out dripping like a drowned rat, leaving a monstrous hole in the rivet froon which he was drawn. It is strange that people will tako so much "water iu their'n." ; : PiiEMONiiroNS op a Storm. All signs, it is .said, fail in dry weather, but we saw yesterday signs of a storm which we havo never yet known to fail, and we confidently expect cold, blustery wee ther before the end of the week. White sea gulls made their appearance, skimmiug the surface of the river in front of the city,. Some five or six of the harbingers of storm and cold were seen the very first ol the season. Personal. Ben. C. Young, well known in our mercantile circles, is in the city.' Ben.. is still nursing a sore hand, through which a charge of shot passed some weeks ago. He loses the use of the littio finger and the one next it, but retains the use of the index and middle finger. Beinxr about to dismount from his horse he set down his gun and placed his hand over the muzzle for support. As he alighted he accideully struck the lock with his too, which discharged the gun, the entire charge pissing through his hand, and some of thc shot passing through the lim of his hat. To-day there a "1 be fit partial eclipse of the moon. A ootemporary learnedly tells us how the thing will bo done, lie savs: At 7:32 o'clock V. M.. the full moon. in the sign of Cancer, will move into a portion of the shadow of the earth, and become a little less than one-hail eclipsed. The middle of tho eclipse will oeaur at 8:42, the end at 0:52 in the evening. The size of. the eclipse will be 5i digits on th.r northern limb. The moon will be one hour above the eastern horixon at five minutes past G o'clock on that evening. Not a Boy. It was reported yesterday that a boy had been drownod in the river at the new wharf-boat at the ship yard. The story was that in attempting to jump from the Mollie Norton to tho wharf-boat, he had jumped into the river and was drown ed. Upon investigation, however, we were gratified to learn that the object that fell into the river was a capstan, which was about being put upon the wharf-boat, and which tho men let fall because the boat was swinging away from the wharf-boat. This incident, no doubt, gave rise to the story of a boy having been drowned. Assault and Battery. Yesterday Barbara Lutz, on charge of assaulting Mary. Brager in the street with a basket, had a hearing before Esquire Davidsou. The fight took place on the street, and is said to have been quite, a spirited -contest. Barbara was fined one cent, with cost added. Tho parlies will probably be more peaceably disposed in future.

It is justly celebrated for building ' purposes. A much heavier business will bedone-th coming season ii: toat line than ever before ia this city. Easily Fixed. Some of the citizens of the Fourth Ward are ycryindignant because the Council ; gave certain parties license to sell liquor on Fourth Street.- They threaten to" letition the Council to-revoke the Ifeense. Let the granting of the- license be voted a, "clerical error," and at tho next meeting of the Council let the minutes of of the clerk bo corrected by inserting the word " wo,','' go that hii record shall read, "License was not granted," &e.
