.JANUARY 25, I8t. TUB FASDIOXS. fTranidated for the Providence Journal from La Mtde Illustree. Fashions. .One of the most pie.ia ini novelties for tho toilet m cm broiJery in precious stones. oiTor ia marvelous. Sashe& are The cm broiuVred with bunches o! purple and white lilac. The leaves are -wrought in silk and the flowers in stones. Everything id now finished with this exquisite ornamentation galloon trimmings, tulle waists, house jackets, ball dresses, fans, slippers, laces, barhes, all sparkle with emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Even perecus, table covers, and various fanciful household triflos. are decorated iu the same manner. These stones are not common bits of glass lined with tinsel, but small pieces of cur crystal of a most delicate and careful workman - ship. liich stone is periorated to allow the passage ol the needle, ami is attached to the cloth with a small bead of t ho same color as the stone, which serves to till up the small orilice. Sashes of faye, with a small pulled tournure, are very elegant, embroidered with jewels. The ends are fringed, both at the side and bottom. The stones come in boxes and are not expensive, the boxes costing only a dollar each. There is one trimming for waists already well known, but which is now greatly in favor. We refer to the bretelles. They suit 'all forms, and are equally becoming to persons who are too stout and those who are too thin. In the former case the bretelles should be brought as near together as possible, and in the latter, care should be taken to separate them as widely as possible. The bretelles are cut crosswise and are finished on each edge with a cording. Tee lower edge is further ornamented either with a fringe, a lace, or a plaited trimming. A pleasing dress trimming is composed of three bias folds nf turc-satin, corded on each edge. Above anil below the cording is a trimming of five plaits all lying one way. 'Pinking is much . used both for .dresses and flounces. For flounces one large Bcallop is composed of several smaller ones. Tartan costumes have two varieties. One is composed of a skirt with a flounce ten inches deep, headed with a puff and standing rutll3, a long ca?que lined with flannel gracefully draped, and a sash with ends. The other has a skirt with a plaited band eight and a half inches wide, put on with a plait of black worstcad, Jlussian chenrtsctte, and deep mantle with three draped capes, the upper one in the form of a hood. These tartans are of tho best quality, and of the most desirable plaids, green and black, green and blue, bhick and white, with threads of red and yellow. The first style costs S5 f rancs, and the second 100 francs. Entire costumes are made of (double faced) black cashmere, which has more substance than ordinary . cashmere, and is not so heavy as - cloth. Tha skirt has two flounces; the lower one is ten, and the upper eight, inches deep. Both flounces are plaited, aud cut on the edge in deep scallops. There are two scallops between the plaits. The scallops are bouud with a black silk galloon, mixed with gold. This skirt is really ill i- . ine uress, ana is completed wiiii plain corsage with scalloped bertelles. t'asaque scalloped, like the dress. tl raped on the sides with a lacing of black and gold cords, terminating in hanging acorns. It b!ck and gold trimmings are thought to be too con spicuous, black and blue, white and green, deep purple, or violet, or ye I low in silk may he substituted. We will not omit to add that these cos tunics are designed for visiting toi lettes. Soihi, very soon, long dresses will be reserved entirely for dinners and soirees, and the draped costumes, with their skirts just touching the .round, will bo th-e only ones which can properly bo assumed Lefore dinner. In this manner mueh is gained in convenience, for it is very troublesome to adjust the tiret-U of a long dress in the ante-chamber, but on the o'.her hand mueh is lost in feminine elegance, grace and beauty when the train disappears. We hav.i seen some charniing hats for young girls, composed of it series of putts of pink rep., and others of royal velvet and atiti, white or pink. Who does not remember the portrait f Henri Third in his black velvet toque? This form is now reproduced by tho latest fashion. Tne prettiest are of black velvet, with orange cordings and an orange bird. Others of the same shape are all of blue velvet, with satin pipings. Bonnets for matrons are a careless sort of cap. Some arc of mauve colored taffetas, white crepe, mauve blonde, and assorted paosies. Others are of green satin, changed with white; others of Sultan satin with thistles. Many have a diadem trimming on the front, and these are tho most becoming of all. DESCRIPTION OP TOILETTES THREE BALL TOILETTES. First rFor a young girl.
