fiAiLY JOITItlSrAIi FRIDAY JANUARY 2,
Wanted Evenings at Home. There is no greater want in these days, in all the households of New England, than evenings at home. We have lamented the loss of the oldfashioned open fireplace, with its cheerful wood fire roaring up the chimney, and its outposts of apples and cider. But they would do little good in these days, wben nobody would stay at home to enjoy them. Everybody and every institution seem to have conspired to make it impossible to gather the family at home for a quiet evening. There are lectures and concerts and fairs to say nothing of opera and theatre and ball which are not yet quite of the past. If a family belong to the Church and do not turn aside to the frivolities, and but occasionally to the public social and intellectual entertainments, there are prayer meetings and confer ence meetings, there are preaehinv: meetings and special meetings and revival meetings. And then there are reading rooms and Christian associations and unions for Christian work, and the lyeeum and the singing school and the glee elub. It is not easy to say which of tt'ese institutions of civilization or Christianization should be given up. Rather the cliort of society is to invent and organize new appliances for pleasure and profit. The church adds a lyceum, the literary association a prp-yer meeting, or the Christian union a billiard training room. We are not sitting in judgment on these modifications of society, nor inclined to write ourselves old fogy by lamenting the degeneracy of the times. Yet one may be pardoned for desiring to find room in these crowded days for so good an institution as an evening at home. Worship is good, whether it be in the Sunday congregation or the evening lecture, the class meeting or the covenant meeting. But then we wonder whether an evening at home would not be a profitable thing to mix in with these. There arc traditions of good old days; some old people think they remember the time when mothers used to gather their children for evenings at home, and fill up the few hours before bed-time with instruction in such old-fashioned lore as catechism and commandments. Might not an occasional evening of that old-style instruction famish a basis upon which to build in the numerous religious meetings of these days? Christian associations and unions, and reading rooma are good so far as they afford sale and pleasant retreats for strangers in the city, who are shut out from the privileges of the homecircle, and lure the wandering from the temptations of vice. But so far as they lead our youth from the quiet of home, and create or increase the craving for publicity, they are not blessings. Better the few books and well read of our fathers in quiet homes, than all the crowded shelves of great libraries, than reading rooms filled with the trashy sensational literature of the day, with the loss of the home atmosphere. Our merchants and wealthy employers uro princely in the bestowment ot their means to build up public institutions for the homoless. Would they not do more good at less expense by making their homes free, to their clerks and employees, and providing for them pleasant social evenings at home? Lectures are good tilings when they arc good, and we are ready to applaud the zeal of rival associations to furnish the most brilliant array of talent Tor their courses of lectures. Albeit e must confess that on the whole the modern lecture has more of chaff than wheat, that sense has less chance than sensation, that smartness and sarcasm are more in demand than strong thought. But good or bad, thev take evenings. Now, what shall be done? There are oo!y about six evenings in the week Sundays excepted and if a man is public-spirited and a Christian as every man ought to be and active in all good work if he attends the conference meeting and the church meeting, to say nothing of the vestry or committee meeting, and is an active member of the ward temperance society ; if he attends the lectures oi our coarse and concerts of our ciub the Philharmonic-iMozart-IIandel-irayden-Mendel-'SoIin Society and drives an evening tu tha reading room committee of our Christian Association for Work, how is he to fiud time to take tea and spend an evening with neighbor Jones, who was married the sama Winter he was, or to invite the Browns to spend an evening with liim, or to have a gocd time with the young folks at home, even if he isn't an Alderman or a member of the Common Council? We know an excellent lady who positively declares that when her husband gets rich and retires from business, she intends to get acquainted with him. We doubt her success, unless beiore that time evenings at home become fashionable. Cannot some good genius, in these days of invention, contrive a week with about ten evenings in it, so arranged as not to infringe upon the original hebdomal week? By some pitch means we might possibly secure the much needed evenings at home. Providence Journal. STOVE WORKS. Excelsior Stove Works. 1.EMIIEU, TII.LJIAN & Co. Successors to if. K. FLUID EXTRACT BUCHU.
To Physicians. NEW Yokk, August lath, 1867. Allow me to call yonr attention to my PREPARATION OF COMPOUND EXTRACT BUCHU. The component parts are BUCHU (IiOSG Leaf), CUBEBS, JUNIPER BERRIES. Mode oj Preparation. Bucliu, In vacuo. Juniper Berries, by distillation, to form a flue gin. Cabebs extracted by displacement by liquor obtained from Janiper Barries, containing very little sngar, a small proportion of spirit, and more palatable than any now In use. Tbe active properties are by this mode extracted. Bucliu, aa prepared by druggists generally, Is of a (Jars: color. It is a plant that e-u ts its fragrance; the action of a flame destroys this (its active principle), leaving a la k and giutlnoui decoction. Mine is the color of ingredients. The Bncbn In my preparation predominates; tbe smallest, quantity of tbe other ingredients are added, to prevent fermentation; upon inspection, it will be found not to be a tincture, as made in pharmacopoaa, nor is It a syiup, aud therefore can be used in cases where fever or inflammation exists. In tltis, you have the knowledge of the ingredient and the mode of preparation. Hoping that you will favor It with a trial, and that npon inspection 11 will meet with your approbation. With a feeling of confidence, I am, very respectfully, II.
