Snow at' Uockyillb. While we' aro'eojoyirig weather as balmy as May the toaptl at- HoekviHe, 125 milns north of us, is covered with snow to the depth, of 1J inches. Ten miles thia Bido or Ikockvillo there 19 no sign of snow. Aspkct, op tub .Weather. Tho eVy was growing hazy last night, aod-there was an extensive circle 'round the moon as she sunk, to rest behind tho western world, indicating a clmni'u of weather. It is warm enough lor "rain, but' in' this latitude. there is no telling what a day may bring forth. Some of our city girls nay desire to know how to p-reveut their pretty peachy cheeks from chapping when they go out in the frosty air. We will tell them Melt together two ounces of oil of almonds, one ounce of spermaceti, one drachm of white wax, and perfume with rose water. This is also a good chap preventive for the hand i. Lists for Tuatk Ueport. We remind merchants and advertisers that tho Trade Report id in press, and will soon be issued, and request those of them who have not yet attended to it, to send in to us without delay their lists of names to whom we are to mail the Report. This matter should receive their prompt attenti on. ' - - Torn Verkin Fair. The E vansville Tarn Vcrein propose to hold a Fair in Turner Hall, on tho 22d to the 27th of March next, for the benefit of their Society. Two ladies in each Ward will canvass the Ward in which they live to solicit aid in the enterprise, and we trust their mission will be crowned with abundant success. ' . Sparrino Match. Ry bills posted about the city we notice we are to be treated to a sparriog match on Saturday nik-ht. It is uot likely to prove very profitable for our people to go into trainiog for tho P. 11. as long as Governor Baker occupies tho gubernatorial chair. The "manly art" is not likely to have a healthy growth under his administration. A Bad Street. Water .Street, for some distance above Fulton Avenue, is in a most pitiable plight. The outer edge of tho street is so cut and irregular as to be really dangerous, especially after dark, while the other side is a most unfathomable mud. Wc believe it is proposed. to widen the street from Division or l'ine to Fulton E venue. Personal. Wc had the pleasure of au introduction, yesterday, to Mr. Robert A. Bacon, Assistant Superintendent of the Evansville, Henderson & Nashville Riilroad. He is an active, livo young man, and will, no doubt, be a valuable man to the Company. Oar old friend, John McCall, the "Rag dealer," is iu the city. He is not the John McCall who figured in the Recorder's Court the other day. Abe Darrech' and J. S. Steele, of Roekville, are registered at the American Hou.so. The New Postage Stamps will soon be ready for distribution. ' They will be smaller than tho stamps now in use, and of superior finish. The -two cent stamp contains an engraving of a post-boy on horseback at full speed. The three cent has a locomotive under a full head , of .-steam, the great carrier of onr domestic service. The Jive cent stamp contains the head of Washington. The ten cent, tho finest in design, has a minia ture engraving of the Declaration of Independence, executed with such delicacy that the picture suffers nothing under the magnifying glass.: The twelve cent stamp has an pecan steamship, aud the thirty cent stamp has a fiosly executed engraving of the surrender of Burgoyne.

ers may have noticed that the City Council, at its last meeting, upon motion of Councilman Jones, ordered a census of the city o be taken, but not without earnest an remonstrance on the part of the only Republican member present Mr. Steele. We o also gratified to credit Mr. Iteuz witu opposition to the measure, and to recognize the fact that, in most matters where his own Ward was not pnncerned. he has shown a desire to restrain the reckless extravagance of his political associates, but usually, as in this case, without success. Wc cannot imagine any reason why the city should be put to the expense of a census just at this timo, when the. taxes are about all collected and the city government compelled to run for eight months on an empty treasury, except it be that some hungry parti sans are to be provided with employment. The . census, if taken, will legally include only tho corporate limits of the city, and will make a very imperfect exhibit of our population; and even if it should embrace the suburbs, it would be interpreted abroad as an exaggerated and forced enumeration. When it . is remem bered that only next year the Na tional Census will be made, and that it will be accepted as the correct basis of population, it look? like tool ish extravagance to institute a city census now.; We hope the Council, at its next ession, will .tevoke the order on the subject. ' Handsome Residences. Since we last visited the upper end of the city, several new arid' elegant residences havo been built up and nearly completed. ' Among those on. Second Street, abovo' Barney Rusche's, aro two, one built by Gen. Shackelford, one of the handsomest and most roomy , in that part of the city; ,the other by Mr. A G. Torjan, a large, neat and elegant building. Mr II. C. Gwathmey s new house on Secohd Street, below Gum, is approiaching completion, and is, a handsorao improvement. On First Street, below Gum, Mr.N. F. Carr has completed during the Fall, a neat comfortable and . elegant two story frame,, which he ' already occupies, Tbe three first mentined aro of brick two stories "each. Mr. George Stock well's new two-story brick, corner of Second and Chestnut, is approaching completion, and will bo an elegant ' residence. ' A New Wharfboat. Oar clever friend Ed. Rowles, of the American Livery Stables, was kind enough to drive us down to the Dry Dock and the ship-yard yesterday. Mr, Cavender is busy at work with a large force of men completing the hull of a . large new wharfboat for W. J. Marshall & Co., of Henderson. It is one hundred and sixty feet long, thirty-six feet beam, seven feet guards, making it fifty feet ovr all, with a five foot hold. It is built of choice material, the bottom and side planks being four inches thick. When completed it will bo one of the finest and most substantial wharf boat hulls on the Ohio River, and will reflect great credit on Mr. Cavender and his employees. It will probably cost but little short of $15,(XX). It will be launched, on Saturday, if not Booner. Graveled Streets. The graveling of tho streets of the city is an immense improvement on the mud streets that pre vail to such an alarming extent in this city. Water Street was gTaveled late in tho Fall, from Fulton Avenuo to tho bridge, though a portion of it was not completed when the weather put an end to the work for the season. With the exception of a small portion where the gravel has been cut through by wagons, the street is quite passable to the bridge, for vehicles, and beyond the bridge the street has. ; been paved or MeAd.irnized nearly to the Marine Hospital grounds, affording our neighbors of Independence a rather pleasant drive in to tho city via Fifth or Fulton Avenue and High Streets, a portion of these , streets having been graveled also. Some Excitement. There seemed to bo a good deal of excitement on Third Street yesterday, and one or two men seemed to be in a bad humor. We tried to find oat the exact cause of the display of wrath but could not succeed in consequence of tho many rumors and versions that existed. Two distinguished city officials came almost to blows, but were prevented from doing each other injury. The exhibition was not in the highest degree a great moral lesson. When their passions cool down, we think both parties will regret the occurrence. Forbearanco should not, too soon, cease to be virtue. Court op Common Pleas. The case commenced on Tuesday afternoon was submitted to tho jury yesterday afternoon. No verdict had been rendered up to 5 o'clock. The case of Louisa Deitz vs. Gottfried Deitz. This was an action on a petition for a divorce on the ground of abandonment and aspersion of character. From the allegations, answers, replies, &c, with tho portion of the evidence we heard, wo incline to the opiuion that the cise is sufficiently filthy; for a Chicago court. Aurora Borealis A very attractive display of this beautiful and interesting phenomenon was witnessed between lour and five o'clock yes terday morning, iU greatest brilliancy being at 20 minutes before 5 o'clock. It spread far across the northern horizon and streamed far up towards the zenith. This beautiful . and mysteri ous spectacle is not of such frequent occurrence as in former years, we ro inclined. At any . rate they are. not as often visible in this as in higher latitudes. . V

moderate business done in the Recorder's Court yesterday, and - tho cases all being clear were soon dis patched. , , Tom. Forssett was drank again and somewhat boisterous. The Recorder thought that $G 25 would cover the case, and Tom. thought eo too,, and paid it over like a little man.: Thomas Scott was likewise un wisely drunk and slightly indecent, He, too, was charged $ G 25, and looted the bill at once. ' ' L. WatKins is a scion of Afriea, and liable to give way to cbulitions of temper. On Tuesday he was in such a mood, and vented his vituperation upon some Africans of the female persuasion, calling them names that did not fall like dulcet strains upon their ebon ears. His Honor charged him $ C 25. He was, however, less fortunate than his immediate predecessors at the bar. IIo could pay but a part, and was let go on a promise to liquidate at hia convenience. t . ,, ' A woman in the northeast part of the city, annoyed beyond endurance by a rude and aggravating boy of her neighbor's, assumed the prerogative of the boy's parents and went into the street and soundly trounced young impudence She was charged with assault and battery, and not denying the charge was fined $1, with $1 GO costs. Justice Emery's Court. There was a trial before Justice Emery last night after dark, which seemed to attract a great deal of interest, as , his office was crowded almost to suffocation. It was impossible to obtain admittance or ascertain anything about the merits of tho case. There seemed to be an array of counsel, and,. at, o'clock they bad not fairly got under way, Gen. Shackelford at that hour being engaged in trying to oonvince His Honor that the counsel, for the prosecution had no right to demand an exposition of the defenso intendod to bo setup before they would say whether or not the State was ready to go into trial. We believe tho Justice was convinced. As we know nothing of the case, we can say nothing of it. Before Justice Walker. Au gust Bicrstadt was accused before Jus tice Walker of having appropriated to his own use a cow claimed to'be the property of George Stater,, of this city, under the following circuru stances: George Stater had taken the cow to Greenfield to pasture. She escaped from the pasture, and was herding with Benoni Stinson's cattle. Bierstadt went to Stinson's and claimed the cow, as is alleged, as his property, drove her home, and killed her. The case is set for trial on Saturday at 2 P.M., and the accused was required to give bond for his appearance in the sum of $200, Valentine Uormuth, charged with having st fire to the house on the corner of Third and Sycamore Streets, on tho night of the T.Oth of December, bad a preliminary examination yesterday .afternoon before ; Justice Walker. A large number of witnesses wero examined on the part of the State. All the testimony was of a circumstantial character, as it mast of necessity bo, as a general thing, in such cases. The defendant was held to answer in the sum of $1,000, and in default was seut back to jail. We heard but little of the testimony, and if we had heard it all it would be improper to give it, as tho case will como up before a higher tribunal. Mite Society. The ladies of. the Cumberland Presbyterian Charch hold their Mite Society mooting iu the lower rooms of thnt Church, corner of Second and Chestnut streets, on Friday night, when they will set an clogint supper and give a cordial wcl-' come to all who will call, for the small sum of 25 cents. Those who desire to spend a delightful evening ' should drop in. i. ' ' Drowned. Fidal Wasseschu, a young man of seventeen years, was drowned, yesterday morning, in the back-water at tho culvert, on the plank road, near the old fair grounds. A Coroner's inquest was held on the body, yesterday evening, and the following facts were elicited: The young man was trying to float a log in the water to the house near by, and was upon the log, which, rolling over, precipitated hira into the water, and before nssistmce could reach him,' he was drowned. Tho jury rendered a verdict in accordance with the above facts. Evansville Business College. This old and reliable Business College, which we ha 1 occasion to visit when in Evansville a short time since, wc unhesitatingly say, has but few equals, and no superiors in the West. The conductors, Mefisrs. - Wells & Klincr, are geatlemen of the first order of talent, and understand, their profession thoroughly, and labor earnestly to prepare each student for the duties of the business world, and we say to our Illinois friends, if you wish to give your sons a good business education, you can do no better than to send thorn to the Evansville Business College.
