THURSDAY. Gov. Fenton's decisive triumph in the Senatorial contest, .gainst euch odds in the way of material resources, is somewhat remarkable. On the second bailor, he had fifty-two votes to forty for Seoator Mo ROAN. A vein of coal has beeu discovered six miles from Madisonville, Ky., only about twelve feet from the surface. The vein is a heavy one, and the quality of coal is said to be little inferior, if not equal, to the renowned Pittsburg. THE Republicans of Maine, New York, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri acted loyal to their party. In all theso States the contest for Senator wan as ardent, and in some filly as bitter, as in oar own . State. But in every iostance, once the will of the majority wa expressed in favor of a candidate the minority submitted and supported the nominee in good faith. The Indiana Recusants alone Lave the disposition to strike down the party to which they are in debted for their-positions,-in '..their insane hostility towards one aspirant At the" last meeting' of the stockholders of the St. Louisa Yandalia & Terre Haute Railroad Comi any. Gov. Wm. Denuison of Ohto.Tho. A. Scott of Philadelphia, J. Paiks of Steubcnville.W. K. Edwards of Terre Haute, J. F. Alexan leV A. G. "Henry, S. Peers, John SetoSeld of Illinois, and J. II. Ilager of Terre Haute, were elected Directors. The officers of the Company will be chosen by the Directors at a meetingto be held some time in February. A majority of the Directors live on the line of the road. It is the intention to push the work on the road during the coming Summer with unusual energy, and have it completed at as early a day as possible. Senatorial Contests. The manner in which the canvi.ss for United States Senators has been conducted this Winter, in several of the State?, is not creditable to the Republican party. It caunot be denied that the personalities indulged in and the bitterness of feeling displayed have cast a shadow over the triumphs achieved by the party at the polls. There t?as no occasion 'for such folly. Thi whole trouble h:is originated in the fact that certain leading Republicans have assumed to hemselves the merit of the victory "list year, and claimed Senatorships as the only just recompense for their invaluable services. These claims party and personal friends have conceded and attempted to enfurce.and the result has been clashing and jangling of the most disgraceful character. In 'New York money was lavishly used as much as $200,000, it is alleged to influence the impecunious and .corrupt, and the same is charged with reference to the contest in Michigan. It is gratifying to state, however, that in New York the aspirant who had the least money proved successful, and secured the coveted prize. In Missouri the contest for Senator was bitter in the extreme, and the competitors were forced to appear, bofore the Legislative Caucus like contestants in a prize ring, and give each other . a word pumxneling, to the great delight of the spectators. In our own State the con test has assumed a phase that is most deplorable. While it is evident that a largo majority of the Republicans of the Legislature favor the election of Mr. Cumback, a minority, openly avow that they wiil resort to any in strumentality, however " indecent and corrupt," to accomplish his defeat. It is even asserted that they will traffic with the Democratic members of the Legislature, and bargain off the vari ous offices within the gift of that body in order to gratify their personal mal ice against the Lieutenant-Governor. iuosi or me gentlemen engarea in this parsonal warfare upon Mr. Cum B.tCK are politicians, and have beeu noted for nothing else. All their lives, they have either been in office or were seeking a position of that character. They have been in debted for success to the loyalty of minorities. Mr. IIdgiies himself, the originator ol the bolt and principal manager of the bolters, owas his po sition in the Senate to the fact that the Republicans of his District, who hate him as much as he dislikes Mr lCMBACK, would not boit the action of the Convention through which he received the nomination, notwith standing the belief on the part of many that his nomination was se cured by political trickery known to all who have had to do with County Conventions. That the gentlemen who, for years past, have been hon ored with official positions, -out of wuicu some oi tnem nave .re alized handsome fortunes, have by their conduct betrayed the trunt re 2, . . . . poseu in tnem by their constituents can hardly be denied. Their blows are not now directed at Mr. Cumback t.nt at h. . iK-j.uuucan party. Prior to the meeting of the Republican caucus, and the taking definite action as a party upon the Senatorship, they naa trie privilege of striking Mr as naru as they pleased. They had the r'vht to use every instrumentality within their power to defeat him. Bat after th i- -.l i- . . party, m legislative convention a sembled, by an overwhelming vote) decided to nouynato him as its can nictate lor senator, the members who bolt the nomination array themselves jul parry irseir. it is no longer hostility to Mr. Cumback but hostility to the eandidatettf ll ie Republican party. ' While we believe there are other men in the State who will make 1 ally as good, if not a better
tats Mr.- OmTP
TJsUJ Sutef BcetVat BACK, we do think fidelity to the party, demands of the men who" have heretofore profited largely by the action of legislative cancusses, that they support its nominee for United States Senator. The contest at '.Indianapolis, disgraceful and humiliating aa it is to the Republicans of the State, is not without its- lesson of warning. ""Politicians who make - a trade of officeseeking and office getting, cannot-be safely trusted. Every manhas the right to aspire to any position within the gift of the people, but it is high time that individuals who claim offi cial position as their peculiar right. should be repudiated, if the people cannot fiud among their number men who will accept official positions be cause the people want them, and not because they desire it, elections might as well be abandoned as useless and expensive contrivances. If -there is no way of disposing -ef the offices of the country except by placing them in the hands of men' who will use them, much as a gambler uses cards, to de ceive and cheat the unwary, certainly the expense and excitement of politi cal campaigns may at least be avoided 'We hope hereafter when any indi vidual, we care not who he may be, assumes that certain positions are his due, that 1K7 people wiil .give him a back seat in the synagogue. There can be no doubt that much of Mr Cumback s opposition has been engendered by the indiscretion of his friends. Indeed, we may say that we never knew a candidate to be so un fortunate in bis advisers and corre spondents. His correspondence with Governor baker was indiscreet m the extreme," and "just such a mistake as no veteran political gamester would ever have committed. The awkward ness with which his proposition was made demonstrates to, every intelli gent mind that it was unquestionably the first offense. His opponents have seized upon it as a pretext, and have used it against him most nnmcrci fully. . But it is i merely pretext They would have trumped up some thing else had -the -correspondence been wanting." 1 heir hostility is baised upon jealousy of the man, and n t because of any particular act that he has committed. So the people re gard it, who have watched the con troversy with a carefulness not warped Kv Ihn Vieuf nP rurannil eri m! ri-ition "J - Wo say to the members of the Legis lature, who are thus willfully jeopar J - iziug the very existence of their party in i the State, that they are teaching their constituents a lesson in bolting tli at wiil react, some of, these days, in a way that will be far from pleas ant to them., If members of the Legis lature are justifiable in bolting the party nominations, how much more will their constituents -be justified in bolting, these same gentlemen when, f ; ever again, they are fortunate to secure the party nomina enough tion. .. The bill passed by the House, abol ishing three South American Missions, throws out General Kilpatrick. the charge was privately made on the floor that he exacted $100 per speech for his services in the Orant campaign, ied many to vote for his decapitation. And so Ren Butler pays off one of his little scores. Pittsburg Commercial. ' ". ' We guess Gen. Kilpatrick lost nothing, pecuniarily, by his speeches. The truth is, all.the, most prominent speakers are liberally paid for the r speeches" and then apply for office on the ground that they made great sac rifices for the party. ' ' . ' Kallroad Grants. ' Nearly one-third of the entire puhlic domain hat been made over to tlut con trol of railroad companies. The quantity of lands conveyed Dy these grants, says the commissioner of the general land office, "is of empire exent, exceeding In the aegregate, by more than.' five millions of acres, the entire areas of the .New .hngland States, added to the surface of Mew York. ricw Jersey.' Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia." He says the grants to the Pacific railway lines alone, are with in a fourth of being twice the united area of .England. Scotland. Wales. Ireland, Guerssey, Jersey, the Isie of Man, and the islands ot the British seas, and less than a tentn ot being equal to the French Empire proper." lsn t it about time this thing should stop?" ' -. , Moses Taylor is one of our rich est men. II is dividends this year are said to exceed one million. He began a little trade for himself when he whs a boy, kept his own account of profit and loss with his own hand, and has done it ever since. His clerks cannot cheat him, and false eutries would not damae him, for he keeps a supplemental set of books written up every night at his house by himself. He is a genial, cheerful, intelligent, courteous merchant. His lace is a benediction. He is welcome to all Boards; and while he has decided opinions and expresses them, his manner is so mild and courteous that it is a pleasure to be associated with him. This spirit has opened avenues ot influence and success to him which have led to his great wealth. JV. Y. tor. Boston Journal. The New York jewelers from whom iUr. The top is of apple blossoms, and nestled among them is a blue-bird. A efirrespondent ot nt atocston (Califoni)'-flra writes as follows: t I herewith append a recipe, which has been used to my knowledge in hundreds of cases. It will prevent or cure the small-pox though tbe pittings are filling. When tenner discovered cow pox -in Lngland, tp.e world ot science hurled an avalanche of fame upon his head, but when the most scientific school of meuicmejn..the world that of Paris published this receipe as a panacea for simdl-pox, it passed unheeded. It is as unfailing as late, at.d conquers m every instance. It is harmless when taken by a well person. It will also cure scarIfit fever. Here is the recipe as l have used it. and cured my children of scarlet fever; here it is as I have used it to cure the small-pox; when learned-physicians said the patient must die, it cured: 'ooipnaie or sine, one grain; foxglove (digitals), one grain; half a tcaspoontut or sugar; mix with two tablesDoonfuls of water. When thoroughly mixed, add four ounces of water. Take a spoonful every hour. Either disease will disappear in twelve hours. For a child, smaller doses, according to age. If counties would compel their physicians to use fins, there would be no need or pesthouses. If you value advice and exnenence. use this lor tnai ternoie .1- sis. " 1 t disease. - - , C." M. 0. & V. The import ance ot this road to the country when completed can hardly be over-estU mated. ',; , ,.i " Let a choir sing a tiinftthrongh as, they have been in the habit ot loiug, witU voices full and unrestrained. Let them then sing it again in precisely the same way as reuards time, pronun ciation, expression, &c, but diminish ing the power twenty hve per cent. that is. smifinir with about threefourths the usual strength, and those' who listen will find the effect improv ed at least one-half. In fact, Una proportion does not adequately ex press the uin.'rence, tor the distinc tion is really betweeu bad and good. When the power is unrestrained, every voice stands out separate and distinct from every other, causing each indi vidual defect to be intensified and ex asrjrerafed. When the voices are sub dued they arc tar more likely to blend, and become, as it were, transfused, a process which strongly tends to ab sorb individual faults, and to create an agreeable result, even out of urt favorable materials."
