January; 19. im. TUESDAY. Ra!rod Meeting. We print, this rnorniag, the proceedings of the railrorxl meeting at Boonville, on Saturday last. We are indebted to Mr. IIehman Fendbich, of this city, who participated in the proceedings, for a copy of the same. It will be seen that the people were thn-oastie. and had no doubts of their ability to build the road. We too, are coofi Jeot they hrre the ability. Our judgment is, that when correct estimates of the eot of the road are obtained, there' will be flmchins on t'i nnrt of miny who now are at a whiie heat in behalf of . the enterprise. If full aDd complete omat mti lift had of the. cost VCui iSJ fc ' of the cnterpriso. and ! then means provided to defray the coat, it may be well enough to undertake the road. But it i3 doubtful whsther the road can be made self-sustaining after it is completed. Scarcely any of . the short-line, merely local roads, are able to sustain themselves in any part of the country, auc. sooa are either aban doncd or absorled by what are called through lines. If the road to Boon ville could be ultimately extended to the O. & M. Road, through Dubois County, its business prospects would be materially improved, but the im mouse cost of uildiog a road in that direction will not tolerate a hope that it will ever be done. Aa we aid before, we think the energies of the people of our own and surrounding counties ought to be concentrated in securing the immedi ate construction of, stone or gravel pikes.. This is practical, and would develope the farms to a much greater extent than a railroad could possibly do. In the center of the State, gravel pike3 are being made in every direc tion, and the benefits the farmers re ceive from them are very creat. Il good committees are appointed to ex amine thocountry and ascertain its ca paeity for furnishing material for the construction of pikes, and correct estimates made of tha expense, and these estimates compared with the railroad estimates, wa think it will be easily demonstrated that,, the pikes will be much the most practical. Iiitilnjia Items, ' r L. D. Gotdsberry, of Indianapolis, is singing in English Opera with the Itichings troupe. John F. Wood has been appointed Sheriff of the Supreme Court, rice, Sam. Lamb..: ... . .. ...... ... .., . . Mr. Wash. Lichtenberger, of New Harmony, is preparing to place , a wharfboat at the mouth of the.Wabash, to facilitate the shipment oi produce South. On Tuesday last four men were injured at Cannelton by the breaking of a derrick used in hoisting large stone. About one thousand more hogs have been packed in New Harmony, up to date, than during a corresponding period last year. . The Lafayette Courier says a dozen or more Republicans declared that they would not feel bound by tho action of the Republican caucusuf it decided for Cumback. The Velocipede is the title of a new paper started at Winchester,5 Randolph County, by Sam. Cottom. The editor says the title is suggestive of "vigor, vitality, vim, vinegar, and speed." A young student at Asbury ran off with Miss MaryPuett, of Greencastle, on Tuesday evening of last week. They went to Michigan to get married. Mr. Kennedy, Chief Engineer of the Mt. V. & G. R. R., is now surveying what is known as the Central Route between Mt. Vernon and Grayville. This route is supposed to. be shorter than tho one first surveyed. Some paper says the meanest man in the State lives in Greene County. He stole four gallons of soft soap from the editor of the Worthington Times , Rev. W. T. Erwin, of Roekport Circuit, has been favored with a great revival cf religion. At a recent pro tracted meeting, one hundred acces sions were made to the Church under his charge. Judge Hines of the Marion County Coniuion Pleas Court, sustained the charges oi contempt made , by Judge Chapman, of the Criminal Court, against the Indianapolis editors, in publishing the proceedings of the Chm trial, in violation of an order of the Court. The defendants propose to carry the case up to the Supreme Court. There has been but one night's skating at . the. Malison Rink since it was built. The proprietor wants to sell out. South Bend has a glorious future before her, so the Register says. We hope so. It's a nice town, and the Register men are nice fellows. The Sisters of Providence are trying to buy the Madison Hotel for a seoool house. Hope they won't get it. for good hotels are scarcer than school houses. Opium eating is greatly on the increase at Terre Hau?e. A druggist informs the Journal that his sales of the article are very much larger than they were several years ago. The wheat in Vigo and Boone bounties is reported to be in fine condition. Mr. Harris, who keeps a livery stable on the corner of Van Trees and fourth Streets, informs us that he has two sluts, (the older being the mother of the younger), and they both' have a family of pup3 in the stable. A few days ago one of the old slut's pips died, whereupon the voung flat left her kennel, and took t ie dead pup from her mother's kennel, and carried it out of the stable to a coavenient spot, and dug a grave with bcf feet, an? then laid her dead relatica tf ' ia tho grave, and
covered it over. Her motbf followed
as ehiet mourner, and looked silently on, but took no part whatever in the performance. Alter the burial services were over they quietly and with apparent solemnity marched back to their respective kennels. We would some professor , of " dogoloe-y to explain tb9 whys and wherefores of this straDge performance.ington Gaze-it. The turnback-Bat er Correspondence. That our readers may understand the merits of the question to tho discussion of which the State Senate has devoted much the greater part . its time since the meeting . of the Legislature, we . copy the- yarious letters between :the Governor and Lieuten ant Governor thu3 far developed. The first letter written by Mr. Cxrsi-, back was as follows: ! 1 ' ' Envelope marked V Private.n3 k Greencastle, Ind., Jan. 6, '68. 1 Gov. Baker Dear Friend: It I had not a thousand things to demand my attention this week, 1 would come tip and see you. I will, therefore, venture to make this sujrcefction: I think Hendricks . will be ehosen by the Democrats,' and he will certainly, (if he intends to inspire hope of suo cess among his friends) resign his po sition. I he person appointed by you will, other things beiag equal, stand the best chance id' be chosen by our Legislature. If you will assure me of tl;e ar-oointment. I will .withdraw from the contest for any position on the Stata ticket, and take the position of Elector at our btate Convention If this trooo9ition does not meet with your approbation, please return this letter to me. .Let me nave your reply at an early day. ' I do most earnestly hope for the unify or the Republican party, l am, a3 ever, your iriena. -. ; i , , mils, uumback To this Governor Bakes replied: " Indianapolis, Jan. 8, 1868. " Hon . Will . Cumback, Greensburg, Indiana:' " Sir: Your communication of the 6th instant was received, and absence from the city prevented an immediate reply. The proposition is "corrupt and indeceut, and 1 feel humiliated that any human being should meas ure me by so low a standard of com mod morality as to make it. " . " I havo the honor to be, " Your obedient servant, ' ; "Conrad Baker Matters stood thus until about the time of the Republican State Con ventiou, when Mr: Cumback ad di essed a second note to the Governor as follows: ' " Greensburq, IndM Feb. 21, 18G8, " Governor Baker: i " Sir As we are engaged in a com mon cause, and on the same ticket, 1 is of the utmost importance that our relations should be friendly. If. therelore, you will return the note I wrote you January b, , ana withdraw the reply you made. I wil then, if you desire it. make a full ex planation of tbe reasons that induced ma to write it, that I will hope may mend the breach between us. " No one as yet knows from me that there is any feeling of an unpleasant character between us. I am your obedient servant, Copy. j Will Ctjmback." To this Governor Baker sent the following response: : " Indianapolis, February 22, 1863. " lion. Will Cumback, Greensburg, Indiana : ' "Bir: Your communication of yesterday is before me. In reply I beg leave to say that the relations of the parties alluded to are not such, in my judgment, as to prevent either of them irom doing his whole duty to the public in the position assigned him. j If the matter proposed to be explained is believed to be 'susceptible of explanation, the explanation should be made without the condition suggested. For such a purpose opportunity will be offered if desired. The return of tho one paper sad the withdrawal of the . other could not change the facts, but would be pregnant with an implication that the parly who really thinks he did no wrong had changed his opinion. 1 . " I have the honor to be your obedient servant, " Conrad Baker." Copy .1 . ; For the Journal. ' Eallroad Meeting at Boonville. . ' The railroad meeting held in Boonville, on Saturday, the 16th inst., was a very spirited affair. Tho Court Houso was filled to overflowing with the heaviest tax-payers of the county. Evansville was represented by Messrs. II. Fcndrich, Geo. Hudspeth, Isaac Adams, App, and several other gentlemen whose names we did not learn. The house was called to order by the appoinment of Hr. Wm. L. liar ker President, and Mr. Peter Good and Nathan Pyeatt Vice Presidents. On motion. E. L. Crawford and Morris W. Bennett were appointed Secretaries. The President stated the object of the meeting, and. in an eloquent manner urged the necessity of the construction of the road at an early day. James II. Masters made a short and telling speech in favor of the road, and in conclusion offered the following preamble and resolutions: Whereas, we the citizens of Warrick County, in public meeting, in pursuance of a call of " many citizens tor a Railroad meeting, and believing that it is to our material interest to have every branch of industry fully remunerated by markets and means of trausportion as near at hand as possible therefore, be it Uexolved, That we must have a railroad from Boonville to Evansville at the earliest period practicable. Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed in each township in Warrick County, and a committee of nve from Civansvilie to get subscribers for such contemplated railroad, and that such committee and subscribers of stock meet here on the 30th day of January, 18G9, and form a Company and elect officers, and complete, as far as may be, articles of association. Resolved, That James G. Jones, Charles Denby, Isaac S. Moore and John B. Handy are requested to draft articles of association, and to be present at our meeting organizing said Company. Resolved, That we most earnestly assure the citizens of Evansville and Vanderburgh County that we desire a railroad, and ask their co-operation and assistance. On motion of Judge Moore, the following resolution was adopted: Resvlved, That the Committee appointed by the President to solicit subscriptions, be authorized to appoint assistants if they deem it necessary. . Messrs. Fendrich and App, of Evansville, were called upon, and made short but appropriate speeches, as also did the Rev. II. O. Chapman, of Boonville.
' On motioa, a ommj ttee of two from each township in Warrick""-County; were appointed to canvass -their respective townships, and solicit subscriptions, and that they report their euecess at a meeting to be he'd at the
Court House, on Friday next, the 22J inst. On motion, a committee' of two or more-were -appointed to attend a meet" ng to be held in the city of EvanSvifle, on Saturday, the 231 inst. lhe citizens of Warrick and Van derburgh Counties, are cordially in vited to be present at the meeting to be held at the Court House in lioonville, on the 30th inst., when steps ill be taken to form a company and elet officers.'' 1 ' ' The best of eood feeling and har mony prevailed, and all showed a hearty desire to further the movement... . ". LETTER FKO X HOPKINS VILLE. ! IIOPKINSTILLE, KY, Jan 13. Editors Journal;. v. - Everything has passed off very qui etly in our community since tho slight ebulition produced in certain quarters by a little P, S. in my last noto to your paper. Various parties hare taken the ben efit of a very bad1 law, called, very properly, the "Bankrupt Law," somewith more, soul and less honesty of intent and practice. Hut that time, like the old year, has virtually passed away; and, as our town is cutting on some of the airs proper for a town with ; railroad connections, there ha3 been some talk ot asking for the es tablishment of a Branch of the United States Court here. Apropos to this, and as inducement thereto, a proposition was yesterday made to our County Court of Claims, whereof ail the worshiptul magistrates ot the county are members, to enter up an order tendering to the United State Government the use of our elegant new Court House for the purpose The proposition was finally carried and the order made, but what, gentlemen, do you suppose was the strongest argument against it, or at least the most; influential one? This, that such a thing were done the negroes here would know their rights and privileges in the premiwes, and be con stantly annoying the good people of the county with litigation. There are some people in whom re bellion and treason are so' imbued. that the only wonder i9. that they wil consent to eat, drink or sleep while negroes can participate in like enjjy mcnts. Bnt let us hope that this spirit, so detrimental to the advance ment of the best interests of our com munity and State, will ere long die andrbe remembered only for its ex treme folly. These things have not kept our tobacco market from opening, though in that the views of buyers and sellers are so variant that no price can b said to be the ruling one. six or seven dollars 'round is about what it is. . Edelweis. It DoaU Pay to Advertise. "It don't pay to advertise." ' never read an advertisement m my life, said a wholesale grocer in Chi caso to the writer 00 one occasion when solicited to advertise in tbe Lour ter, jiesiaes, saia ne, you na7e 11 1 'it it in Lafayette-some of the largest whole sale grocery houses in the country." To this we answered : My dear sir, it yon don't believe it pays to advertise, and never read an advertisement in your life, how do you know that Lafayette boasts of some of the heaviest grocery houses in the West." We put him on honor to answer how he got the impression.1 " Did you ever sell them a bill of goods?" " Never." "Did you ever buy anything of them?" " Never." Forced to the wall, he was compelled to confess that be got this impression from their advertising. Somewhere, he could not tell when or in what medium, an adver tisement of Earl-& Hatcher's or O. W. Pierce & Co. had been photographed upon his eye and memory, and he thus became an unwilling witness to the advantage of advertising. - Now, we undertake to say that this impression fastened upon . his mind was worth, tangibly, to either of these houses all that the advertisement cost. It is Bale to assume that his impression was always associated with Lafayette, and that ho seldom, if ever, spoke of one without an allusion to the other. In a further conversation our Chicago friend expressed tbe opinion that it did not pay a bank to advertise.. We had him again. " Who do you regard as the leading banker of. the seaboard cities?" ." Why, Jay Cooke, of course," said he. " Did you ever have any transactions with his house in New York or Philadelphia?" we asked. 4 Never." "Then, if you never read advertisements and don't believe it pays a bank to advertise, please tell me how you obtained such an impression of Jay Cooke and his relation to banking." He acknowledged the corn, and confessed to new light on the subject. He had never thought of it before. The fact is, it is too late in the day for business men to entertain infidel doubts on adver tising. ' It is a great mistake to sup pose that the advantages of this system are confined to humbugs, patent medicines, . and the like, lor certainly if an article '..of n8 merit whatever, can , succeed in and through advertising, how much more may be expected tor an article of real merit. The borus article, though never so judiciously ad vertised, is bought but once, whue the genuine is not only bought again and again, but the purchaser himself becomes an advertising medium lor its sale. He recommends it to others. No department of business can be regarded a3 an exception to the rule. We could name several citizens of Lafayette who have made money in business without advertising, yet we do not hesitate to say that the same applicatiouj the same energy, capital, and capacity, combined with and stimulated bv a judicious system of advertising, would have doubled their business and their gains.
