The towboat Dictator paa.-ed down a night or two ago with a barge containing about 8.000 i'eet ol'stono in tow; Thia is the first installment oa their contract in "St. Louis shipped by Ulilhorn & Brinkman, of this city. 1'ouK Trade. There are a lew more hogs expected by our packers but the season maybe considered over We give, in the commercial columns on the first page, a detailed Btatemcnt of the business of this city , for the season, from which it appears that the number of hogs packed in Evansville was 15.05G, against 8,-150 last year, i Dangerous Oils. Our citizens, cannot be to careful in the purchase of the oils used in their lamps. The recent accidents in New York and other cities have established the fact that very little pure kerosene oil is offered for sale. Get none but . the pure articlo from responsible dealers. Spilled. A 'bus load of people was spilled on First Street yesterday evening, by one wheel of the 'bus slipping off the axle suddenly. We were told that a like accident occurred to another 'bus, but the report was not corroborated. Cumberland Church Mite. The mite given by the ladies of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church . last night, though not as largely attended as it doubtless would have been had the weather been pleasant,' was, nevertheless, a very pleasant affair; great cordiality and the best social good feeling prevailed. Cotton Sales. Twenty-seven bales of cotton Avere sold at auction yesterday, by Weldon Brothers & Co., at 2Ci23 cents. This is the highest price realized in this market this season, and is within a fraction of the price paid in -New York for like grades. There is no good reason why Evansville should not be ono of the best cotton markets in the West. A Cheistmas Story. This, is the title of a new and very pretty book, w'ritteu by Caroline E. K. Davij, and published by Henry Iloyt, No. 9, Cornhill, Boston, lGuio, fine letter press, neatly bound in cloth, with sev eral beautiful colored .engravings and contains 153 pages. The story is what the title indicates, and is well calculad to interest,' amuse aud in struct children and even grown per sons. Freak op. JNatiip.e. we wereshown, at tho porkhouse of W. M Akin, yesterday, the four feet of a hog just received in a lot from Ken tucky, which" attracted considerable attention among pork men. The fore feet were not cloven at all, but ' pre sented much the appearance of mule hoofs on a reduced scale. The hind feet were cloven into three parts or toes, as it were. Some of the other hogs of the same lot had one foot not cloven, but none were uniform as the one above described. Annexation Litigation. It will be remembered that tho legality of the annexation of the Longworth and Blackford tracts of the city of Evans ville, was decided , in favor the city at .the last term of tho Circuit. Court, We learn that steps have beea- taken to appeal one, and possibly both cases to the Supreme Court, so that the question of their annexation is yet an undetermined matter. Whatever may bo the law of the cases, public policy and the future , progress of the city demanded their early annexation. s Legal Envelpes and Legal Cap i , for sale at the Journal Office. -
Youth. A house of correctioD i is badly Deeded a thia city. Nest to a first elas hotel, of which we have lost ell hope, and water works, a house of correcfinn ia tho mnl ttiinir needed. The mtv ia full of bad bovs. as well as bad . - , 11 men. The bad men, it tneiawsuu ordinances were rigidly enforced, could he tot rid of : but the remedy for the " bad boy evil " is a problem more difUcult to solve. A house of correction, where bad boys could be sent and reformed, is the best remedy we have hoard sucsested. ' ' There is now a lad confined in the city lock-up, at the instance of his own father a worthy citizen who has found it impossible to restrain bis eon and keep him out ot miscnier. He was ona ot the boys that amusea themselves about the 4th of July by breakinff several hne snow wmaows in th vieinitv of the Orjcra House and Chandler's block, and was. perr I hans. the worst ensraeed In the afiair. Several of the boys were caught, tried and fined, but this b7 managed .to elude the cfSoers.' His father finding him ineorrieable. have found i . neeessary to have him eonfi aed in the city prison i i : Thia is a sad commentary on the depravity of many of the hoys of this city Parents are doubtless to some extent chargeable with this growing J evil. They are not careful to know where their boys are, or what they are doinar. Thev are Dermitted to run at large, crowd around the doora of places of public amusement, to the annoyance of our citizens; to prowl I along the , wharf, "and learn vicious habits, until they become uocontrol able. The City . Recorder and J uatices do not feel like sending these young offenders to jail, and hence they are left to grow up and become xMoirma men 1 riparf-hoafa " kntivfw and vicious rnen, aeaa-Dcats, Knaves anu thieves.
