Keno: We are informed that two or three kcno establishments are iu full blast in this city almost nightly. It is said to be the worst evil that cau beset a city. Dopia Well. We are truly gratified to learn that Capt. John Frick, who had his leg amputated on Thursday of last week, is doing well and his speedy recovery is loooked forw ird to with great confidence by his physician and his friends. A Clue. A clue, it is believed, has bcea obtained to the sneak thief who stripped the clothes line on Tuesday evening, just at dusk, in Mr, II. E. Head's front yard. The thief was seen by certain parties in the act of taking the clothes from the line, but was supposed, at the tyne, to belong to the family. Taking a quiet Stroll. We noticed two hack horses yesterday taking a quiet stroll all alone by themselves, fully harnessed except bridles, which they had probably laid aside to assist their vision. They did not seem to be on a bender, and when the owner flanked them they quietly returned to the stable. Personal. It. H. Bishop.Esq., re presenting one of the largest wholesale grocery houses in Cincinnati, was in the city yesterday. Rev. Elisha Lillison, of Metropolis, is on a visit to this city the home of his earlier years. His father, Elisha Lillison, was, we believe, the proprietor of Lillison's Enlargement to the City of Evansville. Benefit To night. We remind our readers that to-night the German Dramatic Corps of thU city give a theatrical entertainment at Turner Ilall, for a laudable purpose one that commends itself to the benevolent and humane. Let the spacious Hall be "crowded. The performance will be well worth the price of admission, and the consciousness of having coattibuted to a worthy object will realize a large dividend on the investment. Filling Low Lots. The work of filling up the low lots in the vicinity of the gas-works is being pushed steadily forward. An immense amount of work has been done, but far more remains to be done. One enterprising fellow has saved much of the expense of filling his lot by building t he foundation of a house upon it, securing a deep cellar without excavatioi, and saving the expense of filling that portion of his lot. Some of thts5 lots require a fill of fully fifteen feet to bring them up to the level of the city grade. Taken in and Identified. A man calling himself Sam. Jones some times, and sometimes Daniel Ward, a whits man at that, was arrested yesterday by officers McDevitt and Hitch on a charge of stealing clothing from a fellow-lodger in the National Hotel. He was fully identified, and the proofs against him are of such a nature, it is said, as to very likely lead to his appearance before the bar of the Court of Common Pleas to-day or to-morrow. Court of Common Pleas. The replevin suit of A. Olney and Catherine Cleary vs. Jacob H. Miller, Sheriff of Vanderburgh County, occupied all the day yesterday in the Court of Common Pleas, and was closely contested by the learned and able counsel engaged on each side. The plaintiffs allege in brief that Mrs. Cleary held a mortgage against the piano in dispute, which, with other property, if we mistake not, was, as they allege, quietly shipped to this city. The piano was purchased by Sheriff Miller, and is held by him, and this suit was brought to recover possession under the mortgage held by the plaintiffs. The case was tried by a jury, or, at least, was partially tried, but last eve-
Ding W&3 UiSinisSed. netuer ii onus here remains to be seen. Iglebeari and Pycr for the plaintiff, peoby and Shackelford for the defense.
Recorder's Court. The Recorder booked quite a fair amount of fines and costs yesterday, though the net receipts were not large up to the hour at which we called. t Kate Sullivan, as she was about to retire, grew thirsty, and not standing on the order of her going, went at once to a saloon, in an attire very nearly approaching nudity. For thus exposing her precious life to the inclemency of the season and the midnight air, she was shown to the presence of the City Recorder yesterday, who fined her $20, with $4 30 costs. She started out under escort to gather together the stamps with which to liquidate, and had not returned up to 4 o'clock. Andrew Ellt3 got very drunk, and became disorderly, disturbing quiet, christian people in their houses. His fun cost him a fine of $5, with costs amounting to $7 15, which he paid. Rather dear for the whistle, wa should say. John Hays had be3n an " in" and an out" alternately for a day or two, and chiefly " in." First he got too much whisky in regular "boomerang" then he got too much " old nick" in his disposition, and becoming disorderly, broke in-to the station house, and was mxt in the presence of the Recorder, who attempted to stipulate with him for $5 65, but John was in no-cent of money, and had to go down to see " Black Be33," and is likely to be an in" for some days. A young man not ashamed to get drunk, but too modest to desire his name to appear in the paper, was charged with being drunk, simply drunk. The Recorder rendered him a bill of particulars amounting to $4 60, for which he gave a check pretty well endorsed, and wa3 permitted to retain his liberty, lie should heed the admonition of a wise man of old : " Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup," nor upon the lager beer when it foameth over the goblet, or on the " boome nickle" when it holdeth its head. Late Improvements. If any one desires to confirm his faith in the wisdom of the City Fathers and the rulers of this municipality, he should visit Fifth Street, Lamasco, and the avenues in that portion of the city improved (?) late in the Fall. Fifth or Canal Street has been cut down from one to three feet, and widened out by filling up a portion of the canal. The new earth, thus exposed to the autumnal air, frosts, :iad rains, opened wide its myriad mouths and drank draughts that well nigh created a state of liquefaction. The consequence is, that these streets and avenues have been almost impassable all Winter, and will remain so until the hot suns of next Summer bake an upper crust upou them. It required the sagacity of the present city administration to conceive the idea of digging up streets at the beginning of Winter. Sapientes homines! Baulky Horses. We are told that when the fire alarm was being given on Tuesday, the horses attached to the Union or Lamasco Engine, re fused to do duty, baulking lor several minutes. If the horses are subject to such ".fits," they should be traded off for better ones. Five minutes delay from such a cause, might involve the loss of thousands of dollars' worth of property. Jim Wiltshire proposes, if the case occurs again, to send down one of his wonder horses as a leader The Posey County Horse Thie f. Mr. Gregory, of the firm of Duckworth & Gregory, of Mt. Vernon, and one of the owners of the horse stolen on Tuesday, and recovered in this city on Wednesday, came to the city yesterday, and recovered the horse, and took the thief to Mt. Vernon to await trial. As most of the witnesses live here. Prosecuting Attorney Pearse desired to try the case here at this term of the Common Pleas Court, but for some reason, Mr. Gregory preferred to take him back to Mount Vernon. This is manifestly the young man's first attempt at horse stealing, and he has made such a miserable failure of it, that it is not very probable that he will make a second experiment until he shall have gone to school at Jeffersonville for two, or three years, and where he can, no doubt, fiud finished teachers. Evansville Manufactures. It speaks well for the mechanical skill of Evansville mechanics and artisans that our manufactures, of whatever kind, find a ready market at remunerative prices, and that as extensive as are our manufactories the demand for Evansville commodities exceeds the supply. Horse collars manufactured in'Evansville find a ready market in Cincinnati, bt. Louis, and elsewhere. Evansville stoves and castings, hollow-waro, &c, are shipped to all parts of the South and Southwest. Portable engines, saw mills, separators, steam engines and boilers, are shipped to Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas, as well as to the farther West Kansas and Nebraska. Evansville cooperage finds its way to the sugar plantations of Louisiana, and to the packing establishments of Arkansas and Texas. Evansville sheetings manufactured at the rata of two thousand yards per day, are in demand far beyond the supply, and the Cotton Manufacturing Company, who are now running twelve carders, two thousand five hundred spindles, and fifty looms, will be compelled to double the capacity of their mills if they expect to supply the demand for their fabrics. Immense quantities of furniture manufactured here, are shipped to all
parts of the South and West. There is room here for vastly increased
manufacturing establishments. A more extensive rolling mill. mil works, glass works, a larger ax factory, and an establishment for the manufacture of wooden ware, brooms, and agricultural implement's, are among the institutions that naturally suggest themselves. There is proba bly no place where capital could be more advantageously invested in manufactories than in Evansville. Raw material of all kinds is at our door. fuel is abundant, labor is cheap, and good markets for our commodities surround us on every hand, and are easily reached by river or by rail. Select Social Hop. There was a nice little select social hop at Mozart Hall last night Despite the inclement weather quite a large crowd was present, and everything passed off pleasantly and in excellent order. At half-past 11 o clock the company par took of an elegant 6upper prepared by Mr. Hilt and his excellent lady. As it was rainy, tbe party seemed content to stay and enjoy the fleeting hours in the gay dance or the mazy waltz. Altogether it was as pleasant an affair as we have seen this season.
