As Speaker of the House of IteprcFentatives durinsf the stormiest period in the history of our Government, Mr. Colfax has won .unfading laurels. Ni tithtjnding' the bitterness engendered by th war, and the excitement that prevailed in the House, al . most every day, so genial in manlier and patient inspirit and kind in his demeanor, was Mr. Colfax, that he invariably won the repect and challenged the admiration of his most, bitter political opponents. The House repeatedly, and by unanimous ' vote, passed resolutions thankinz him for the conrtepy and fairness with which lie discharged hia duties as ptesliiug officer. r When it was evident that General Geant would , become the candidate cf the "Republican party for ' President, rnany eaii that would. dispose of Mr. Colfax, as a candidate for Vice President, as it would not be policy to nominate two men from adjoining States. But when the delegates frdm the various States assembled at Chicago," it was soon evident that the people desired his nomination. Whilf various States had local interests that might be best subserved by the selection of a candidate within their borders, all were agreed that the nomination of Mr. Colfax would do mcst to give harmony and enthu- . eiasm to the party.
