Further details of the time' ;and vplace of speaking will be published itTour next issuer" i Returned. Several of the attor--neys of this city, who have been absent at Boonville, attsndlog the Court of Common Pleas, returned to the city night before last. Postponed. At the last meeting of the City Council a donation' of $2,000 was made for the Congressional excursion. That excursion has been . postponed until the Spring of 1S6!. Poll Books and Tally Papers. The Auditor prepared and sent out the poll books and tally pper9 yesterday for the election on the 3d of November. . ' . ..Trinity Methodist Chtjrcii. Rev. Mr. Gilmore will preach in Trinity M. E. Church to-morrow morning. Mr. Gilmore will be remembered as the former minister of Locust Street Church.' The people are invited cordially to attend. Not a Case. There was not a single ease before the Recorder- for investigation yesterday. The police officers could not even get a case out of Hamburger's corner. The colored denizens of that locality even were on their good behavior. Court op Common Pleas. Tho terra of tha Court of Common Pleas in Warrick "County 'closed day before yesterday. The docket was a small one, and almost all the cases were' dispbied of. A largo number of liquor - cases selling the -"ardent ' . contrary to the provisions of the law were disposed of, the defendants generally coming out victors. t:;. i , .. o- . , Seventh Ward. Tho Seventh Ward Republicans will meet at Kolle's warehouse this evening; at 7J o'clock, when it is r hoped that every Republican a the ward will be in attendance. Important matters will be brought : before the meeting. It is therefore hoped that all will be prompt in attending. - There will be music in attendance, and good speak ins. - '-'''' ' '' Before Esq. Walker. Esquire Walker had a case of assault and battery before him yesterday. tWe omit the names of the parties in the case., The assaulting party was fined one dollar and costs. Ia turn, the assaulting party had the assaulted arrested, on charge of provoking an assault, and ho was fined one dollar and costs. What an excellent thing this provoke law is. It furnishes both parties an opportunity to get satisfaction. ',' - ; Quick Work. Last Monday, a man whose name we did not learn, stole a horse at Boouville and attempted to make his escape with the animal. On Tuesday he was arrested, the horse recovered, and the man sentenced to the penitentiary for a term of five years, on a plea of guilty. That is what may be ealled .doing work up in a hurry. The defendant is now on his way to the State building at Jeffersonville, and will have a good chance to learn a trade, by which he can make an htonest living. . .... ,' . Highwaymen; The New Albany Ledger of the 21st, contains the following: "As Mr. McCullom, of Owen County, Ky., and his nephew, a Mr. Richardson, of Evansville, Indiana, were coming into this city night before last, from a visit to a relative about forty miles up the country, they were met by three men dressed in white and masked, were ordered to halt, and, on refusing and driving ahead faster, were fired at. The three men rode rapidly'after the buggy, hut as they were poorly mounted, they failed to overtake it." I i i i ui i , js?

be saea by the announcement this morning that Eon. Schuyler Col pax, Speaker of the United . States House of Representatives, and the Republican candidate for Vice Presi dent, will visit Evansville on next Friday, October 30th. There will doubtless be a general desire on the part of the people, not only of Vanderburgh but of the adjoining counties, to eee and hear "him. In order to accommodate them as far as possible, the Railroad Company, it will be seen, propose to carry passengers,at half fare rates, and the packets, (both Cairo and Louisville,) at two-thirds the regular rates, and tnake special : arrangements to delay departure till the close of the night meeting. Discriminating Against Evans i Ville. Wo have before us a card of the Cincinnati , and . Tennessee lliver packets, Abeona and Kate Robinson, which contains the following: "We, the. undersigned,, agree to give the ; above named boats all the freight . we may have for pointg on the Ohio River, between Cincinnati and Paducah, and for the Tennessee, on the .days said- boats "leave port, they carrying freight at going rates." And then follows several hundred names of merchants "ani business firms,, 1 embracing : all varieties of trades. lit ia.well known that the Charmer is an Evansville and Cincinnati, packet, plying regularly between the two ports, and the - above pledge simply says we, the undersigned merchanta. of Cincinnati, do ' net want the trade of. Evansville, unless we are permitted to ship their goods ; on boats which are avowedly seeking to draw trade from Evansville which legitimately belongs to" herj aa,3 i direct proposal to starve out the Cincinnati and Evansville" packet,' It is well known that Evansville has commanded the larggr - portion of the Tennessee River trade for the last three years, and that Louisville and Cincinnati have made desperate efforts to attraet -that trade to those cities. Hitherto they have met with ill-suc cess, and" -they can now only succeed by driving our packets out of the trade, and. "in this they , expect Evansville merchants 'to" assist them by shipping goods on boats that; are -in 'opposition to the packets that arc bringing trade to our city the Charmer and' the Sam. Orr.' '-It is the interest of our merchants" that this discrimination against our city shall not prove suc cessful, and they should demand that goods they order at Cincinnati be shipped by our own packet, and if Cincinnati merchants refuse to ship aa ordered, then our merchants should go elsewhere for their goods. As long as our packets are sustained in the Tennessee River trade they wiU draw to our eity the largest share of that traded but if once they are starved out, the trade will go by us. The duty of 4our merchants is plain. Will they do it? . . . : A Joke . Well Turned. Before the election, a Democrat of this city, who is 60 : fortunate as to have a Re publican wife which speaks well fori her sound Judgment concluded that he would have a little sport after the election of Hendricks. Accordingly he went ti)' a dressmaker and ordered a full suit of mourning A'or his wife, which in the event of Hendricks being elected, he proposed to present to his. wife,; who is strong for Baker. This was all done very " quietly, but his better half learned ' of what- he proposed to do, and patiently waited the . result. Soeing that her' suit of " mourning'! was. not forthcoming, she sent her husband's hat : to the store, and had it trimmed with crape, after which she presented it to him'. Mournfully and sorrowfully he looked upon it, acknowledged the joke well turned, but could not see anything in particular to laugh about, a Trinity City Mission. Rev. John Maddox has recently been appointed to a new field of ministerial labor in "this, city, called Trinity City Mission." r At present he will .preach regularly every Sunday in the .Methodist . Church at, Independence. Preaching - at 10$ . aji. and 7 r.M. ; Sunday School at 2 p.m. A new rOom for preaching will soon bo opened in the eastern part of the city. ; Work. But a short time remains for -Republicans to work before the eleotion. If every man wiir do his duty, much good may be done in that short time. It is to be hoped that no Republican will cease to labor, and that most assiduously. " It is within the power of Republicans to carry the county by a handsome majority, and by vigorous and active work it may be done. Attend your ward meetings, gentlemen.' and keep up your organi zations work. . ) ; Grant Cavalry. The young men of the Grant Cavalry will meet at Turner Hall, at 7J this evening, where it is hoped there will be a full attendance, as business of importance will be brought before the organization. Turn out, gentlemen, and mako arrangements for the balance of the campaign. Circuit Court. The only case before the Circuit Court yesterday was tht of Gaff, Cochran & Co. vs. one of the Insurance Companies, which suit wa3 brought to recover the amount of insurance on some hay which had been lost on a barge, some time ago. The details of the case were not interesting to the public. The result of the suit was not learned by us. .
