Oa Monday last the bouse of .Wm. Matheny, situated . on the bank of the river one milebetowiMt Vernon, was burned to the ground, while the family was. absent at Mt. On Tuesday an ill looking fellow , from lntucky crossed over to the house of Malheny'a father-in-law, Mr. Jessq Oatman, and appeared to be examin ing the. premises, when a lady, dis-; covering him, seized a gun. and fire J at hiin, when he incontinently fled, and re-croed to the dark and bloody ground. ;It is a pity these knaves could not boJ caught and hung or else; shot&s they run.. . .... , , :-, , '.Will They be Paid? It is a well kpown fact that the special police forco .on the day of the election very gcncrajly, engaged in working for the Democratic .ticket. , In the JnratWard.pne znaii,. engaged as a special policeman, rode about in a buggy hauling men , to the , polls, and in drumming;,. up the faithful. Citizens arc anxious. 'to know what will be done by the Council in regard to the payment of. them. ( Councilman Reitz opposed the payment of thot special police Iit Spring after the election. on the ground that some of them had engaged jn, electioneering for the Re publican . candidates. Many of our citizens are anxious to know whether Mr. Reitz will favor or oppose the payment of these men who employed their time in electioneering on Tuesday last.!-; j A Row ' on Tiiird Street. Yes terday evening, a man named Johnson, who keeps a fish-boat at the Lamasco wharf, went on Third Street and commenced a disturbance with Peter Maicr, using, it is said, very abusive language to Maier. Constable.Frank Morris attempted to pre serve tho . peace, .and commanded Johnson to , keep ' quiet. . Johnson at once .turned On Morri3 and conimenced abusing him, and offered him violence,' it is said, when a fight ensued, 'which resulted in Johnson get? ting very severely handled, ""receiving quite a cut over one of his eyei, from which the blood flowed most profusely. J ohnson was taken to the Third Street engine ' housej'where ho , was held for' a short time and then disf e"h"argcd on his own recognizance. TcNErOuT. The: special policeman: who, aight before last; made an attack i on a saloon keeper, striking bimrVuh aglasaon the arm, and after, ward drawing a revolver as if ta shoot for which he was arrested and lodged in the eity prison, was- reversed from custody yesterday, there net appearing any:ooo toi'proseeute him for the offense. . An unfortunate individual who is well kaown. in the city, and who. perjodioally. geta on a bit of a spree, was, unable to r stand the election excitement imbibed , too freely and found himself locked in the city prison.-No oao appearing tor his prosecution ho was turned loose, and bade go and sin no more. -' .Injustice. -A few days, ago the Courier ;' in speaking of j an r assault made on Postmaster Whittlesey, mentioned the Eame of Mr. George Chandler in a very offensive manner, 1 as having been one of the assailants. At the thne the troublo occurred, Mr. Chandler was not within five or. six squares of where the assault . was made; and knew nothing of it. Notwithstanding this gross injustice to Mr. Chandler, who is a quiet and orderly citizen, and, who never indulges in riotous conduct, no correction has yet been made in that paper. i An Excited People. The excitement and desiro for latest news yesterday, was equal to any that existed during the most exeitingjtimes during the late rebellion. .
