However hot the contest may bo up to ' the eve ' of the "battle, on election dayhe mostj commendable good feeling prevails. , The election yesterday passed off with, unusual quiet and good order.JWe heard of but a single ebulition of.ifeeling and that was short : and innoxious. The manner in which, the election passed off was a complete vindication of the wisdom of the County Commissioners in dividing the Township) into precincts. , There was no eapacial crowd at the polls, and all who. desired to vote had the privilege of doing so, if they were entitled to rote, and the returas from most of the Wards were received at the Journal Office by 11 o'clock. We are greatly gratified that our city was not disgraced , by any violence, however the election 1 may have resulted. A we write the result in the city is still : in doubt. Thus for, midnight, the returns show large Republican gains in the city. Later. Full returns from the ten precincts of Pigeon Township show that wo have carried the Township by sixty , to one hundred and five majority. The news toward midnight, 'from the several Wards, and from this State, .Ohio and ..Pennsylvania, had the effect to check the hilarity at the " Vincennes Varieties,", and one by one the Democracy wended their ways1 silently and contemplatively homeward. The spirits of the Re publicans rose correspondingly, and the Seventh Ward came out in force to serenade the Journal office, and would not be satisfied until they had heard from John J. Chandler, exGovernor Dunning and Colonel Foster, who severally complimented the noble patriots of the Seventh Ward on' their gallant achievment of yeater-" day'. Evansville is still loyal, and ' a majority of her people have declared against the present city government. TheGlorious Seventh. The Seventh Ward covered herself all over with glory yesterday, rolling up the handsome majority of 11G to 122. The Ward is full of gallant soldiers who did noble service in putting down the Democratic rebellion that succeded the election of Abraham Lincoln, and they continue to vote as ; they shot. They organized early and did effective work, and their triumph is complete. If all the wards had imitated their example, we should have carried the city by 250 to dOO majority. The other wards should emulate the example of the noble Seventh, and add largely to their vote in November. The enemy is now routed in the city. Let the pursuit be vigorous, and wa shall achieve an Appomattox in Novem ber. - . , Fine Grapes. We were presented with two of the moat magnificent bunches of grapes yesterday hy Miss Kate Laughlin we ever saw, and they were as luscious to the taste as they were beautiful to the eye. They were from the grounds of our late fellowcitizen C. R. Bement, Esq., of Bridge port. . . Vote op the Township. The vote of this Township yesterday was by far the largest ever cast, showing an Increase of at least 800, which indi cates the increase of the population Knight Township. Official re turns were not received from Knight Township last night, but it was re ported that it had gone Democratic by 95 majority, which is probably about correct. - The Countv. We are compelled to go to press without the returns from several of the country townships The returns leave the county ticket ia doubt, with the chances in favor of a small majority for the Democracy. Opera House. Now that the election is over, and the excitement has passed, our people will no doubt dcngnt to . attend the Opera House xuia is an institution that our people ought to sustain, and we tfciniV ;n The magnificent spectacle, Zorastre win do presented the balance of th evenings this week.
