The New York papers admit that tho recent town 'elections demonstrate this fact. The' Herald contains tho following: Vr.:1'.-.. Kkaotion in, Connecticut. The town" elections in Connecticut on Monday last show a decided reaction in favor of the Republicans since last Spring. "'-It H useless for tho Democrats o ay thtrre is nothing in these local elections, or that they ' only reflect the sentiments of the people upon local questions without regard to na-, tional ': topics. In a crisis like the present, -on the-eve, as we are, ol a momentous Presidential election, these, little sign1 indicate the bent of the popular sentiment upon the great issues!" the hour. The great Republican ifain of fourteen hundred in the city'of New Haven is especially significant. Altogether, wo are - bound to take this rasult in Connecticut as tho tirst manifestation of the approach of that immense tidal wave which will sweep- over the whole country in favor of (Jen. Grant in November next. The Tribune of the same date gives authentic returns from sixty out of the one . hundred and sixty towns of the Statej which show a net Republi-. can. gain of over 3,000 votes, upon which it remarks as follows: CONNECTICUT POINTS TUB WAY.1 The town elections in Connecticut on Monday 'prove to. have been even more decisively Republican than was at first UDorted. Baker as the Chief Executive of the State, the Sentinel makes the follow ing confession: - "We publish the following communication, though we think the writer attaches too much importance to the article under the captioD, 'A Costly Governor. which was written in criticism of the comments of a paper thatis not entitled to notice. .We supposed the honorable auditor knew ns too well to think such a course neoessary, and are inclined to believe that he was prompted by others, for 'he knows well our course towards : Gov. Baker has. been fair and courteous, and: except the article referred to, nothicg ever appeared in the Sentinel that could be tortured into a reflection upon the Governor's honof or integrity.
