Courier Vve "might, with equal propriety, ask why does not the Courier publish tne ailuwaoces. iney are public records sdJ accessible to all, and if there is capital to be made out of them the Democracy; ought by all means to be informed of them. We have made it a practice, at the close of each term of the Commissioners' Court, to publish the allowances in full. We do not remember ever to have setn them in the columns of the Courier. , , , Vermont, Maine, Connecticut. The to wu. elections in Connecticut, last Monday, show that the State is coming into. line and will follow the lead of Vermont and Maine in November. It is very significant that in the city of New ITaven alone, where Governor. English resides, the Demorats lose over thirteen hundred votes, or about four hundred more ' than their majority in the whole State last. Spring. It is hardly necessary to fay that the election was closely contested. So it-will be all' through the North. The tide is everywhere rising, and will bear Grant and Colfax on to a sweeping victory. Republicans of Indiana! let us rally tati the rollcall, and every man stand firm at his post. ' ' '-: That brilliant statistician! 4 Alexander Delmah, is the target for universal ridicule. "It has -transpired that the errors in his figures amount in the aggregate to 160,000,0001 One single estimate is sufficient to illustrate his ignorance and stupidity. The original estimate for the Navy was about $ 17.000,000. This was "reduced by strikiogat the largest items not absolutely -necessary, and; by cutting down the fjree'.'of officers and men, which nowoonsi$t" cf. about 10,000 men. The actual expenditures in the three fh'-al iuioklKi past amount - to $0,000,000. Mr. Delmar, " in" his " tables," estimates the requirements of tbe Navy at $47-000,000.! 'This trifling mistake, aided to his forgetfalness in taking into consideration the actual receipts of the New York Custom House, entitle Mr. Deuiab to the very first rank s a blunderer. The New; Ytirk Sun alluding lo Frank Blair's assertion in his speech in Cincinnati that the reconstruction laws have been de'eided to ! be unlawful, ' null and void,' " by the Supreme Court of the United States, the body authorized to pass upon such questions," pertinently asks, "Where, when, and in what case was sui-u a decision given by the Supremo Coui? If General Blair: can tell,' he has sources of information not open ';o orJinary lawyers." The Sun thinks, perhaps, General BLAIR " has late and more perfect reports of the decisions of the Supreme Court than are known to the public in general," and cills upon him to make them known immediately. . Kebellion is rampant in Texas, and officers of the Freedmen's Bu reau, belonging to the, regular , army, are as much in danger, it appears from official reports made to General Howard, as if they were among a tribe of savages on the Plains. Such are some of the, If gitimato -effects of the Tammany platform and the Blair revolutionary programmes. The election of Grant and Colfax is the

I 1 Irish Republicans. . ; The laree number of Irish' voters in New York, Cincinnati, St. Louis and other places, who are enrolling themselves i -Rennblican organiza tions, is one of the significent signs of the. timcH. Cuonftr's Institute, m New York,' was filled to overflowing, the other evening, by an enthusiastic Irish Republican meetine which was addressed bv Senator Conness and other eloquent Irish orators. Hundreds of Celtic voters in this city, who never yet east a Republican ballot, will, we trust, break away from the old party trammels and give their votes for Grant and the Republican ticket. Our advices from St. Louis ilar effect. We know what desperate exertions will be made to nrevent this exercise of the freeman's independent . right. But we trust these efforts will not avail in suppressing the good movement bo auspiciously becvo. ; ' Intellicent Irishmen, who have hitherto adhered to the Democratic party, must have long since become restive under the consciousness tnat all voters of their race were regarded as so much political capital always reliable for whatever Democratic ticket might be set up, whether their wishes were consulted pr not. They must have seen the effect of this assurance, wnich . tbe past has so neatlv justihed, upon their politioal fortunes, and how injurious it has been to the advancement of Irishmen, as a race, in this country.: Their welfare would be largely promoted by at least a division of their .political forces, and by dispelling the Demo cratic notion that partydnll is sum cient at all times to carry their vote in solid column for the Democracy Their self-respect must be lessened by. the reflection ' that citizens of every other nationality have refused to be bound en masse to the chariot wheels of any party, while they have been treated; aa - shackled captives of Democratic victors. . A i little unbiased .reflection, party prejudice being thrust aside, must convince the intelligent Irish voter who has for any time watched our po litical affairs, that the so-called Dem ocratic party is far removed from the influence oi real Democratic princi ples; that, in upholding slavery, it W dobe all in its power to exalt canUal at the expense of labor; that it has long since ceased to be a party mat recognizes tne will of the people as the supreme law, but aims ever to 101st the opinions and purposes of sett-constituted leaders upon their humbltr followers, contriving, by means ot upera iiouse clubs, and the line aristocratic comDinations, to con trol, in secret, the action of the mass es; and that it treats the Irish vote as its property,-not as a political ele ment tuny entitled to its voice in al that concerns the nublio welfare There is little, in truth, save a misap propriated name, that is fitted to at tract any foreign voter to the Democratio side. We appreciate the difficulty which any man finds in breaking away from old party associations. But we remember, also, how large an element of the present Republican party was but a few years ago in the Democratic organization, and left it on account of its abject subserviency to protlavery dictation, 6f its complacency toward armed traitors at the South, or lor other reasons based in a love of freedom, self-respect, and patriotic impulse. Wo do not expect extensive inroads, in a day, upon ranks hitherto so compact in the Democratic line as the voters of Irish origin. But the time has come for a break in this phalanx. So much as this is already assured. . We hail it as a good omen for those chiefly interested. The Republican party, without this help, is Strong enough to carry the day triumphantly, yet it is not so strong but that ail new adherents will be cordially welcomed and faithfully regarded. Cincinnati Chronicle. - The Election-Business. Peace or war is the great issue to be decided through the ballot box this year. Naturally, therefore, business men take a lively interest in the eleotlon, and are governed in their operations, as the campaign progresses, by the prospects. When Seymour and Blair were nominated on a revolutionary and repudiation platform, the credit of the Government suffered; bonds declined in London; gold advanced In New York to 150, and business everywhere was depressed.' The Vermont election was the first popular response to the New . York platform, and that sent gold' down three per cent, Maine followed in the same line, and gold fell fou per cent., and now, as it becomes evident that Grant will sweep the country .gold continues to fall standing to-day at 140, which is ten points below the price reached on the paniciclused by the Democratic Tammany Hall deliverance. , In the meartime there has been a 6teady growth of confidence in mercantile ' circles, and a marked improvement in general business. If this has resulted in anticipation of the defeat of the revolutionary party, what may we expect when Grant shall be actually elected? On the other hand, if Seymour's nomination sent gold un 10 net cent.. and caused general depression in busi. nens, what would oe tne . effect ot a Democratic victory in November? These are- questions that business men can readily answer. There are men in business who support Seymour, because they ihink he will be defeated anynow, ana tney vote merely to secure Sornhera trade. liut if Seymour should Ce successiul, we ask these gentlemen to tell us what bouthern trade would be worth r If the eountry is to' be ngain revolu tionized, as it, i would be under the rrar.k Blair programme,, no . man would sell a dollars worth of goods to the South, on credit; there would be no Northern trade, and there would be a panio in business such as fri DV bej? "Perienced since lhol. 1 he disaster would bo so terrible and sweeping that no man would" escape it. It would cause a suspension of business; it would stop improvementa; it would throw the people out of employmentit would depreciate the currency in the hands of all classes until a greenback, dollar would not bo-worth forty cents in gold, and it would set the whole industrial interests of the country back five years. ; This is no exaggerated picture of the events that would follow the election of Seymour and Blair, and we commend it to those who carry their patriotism in their pocket who are supporting Seymour and Blair merely as a bid for trade.
"Buain what the country needs now is repose. Thia 'I'Kia.. llHMn t.;rn a The work of reconstruction, will be speedily completed. Civil governments will be established and maintained in all the late rebel States; all classes of citizens will be protected in their rights; agricultural and commercial interests will prosper; stability will be assured in national finances; the thieves who are now plundering the government.-will be driven out; the taxes paid by the people will go into the Treasury of the people, insteaH of into the pockets of the rings of Treasury eaters, and we shall have lighter taxes with a grndual reduction ; of the National debt. ... . . .71 In a purely business point of; view. therefore, the election is .one of ex traordinary importance: but great as this is. it sinks into comparative insignihcaace when we consider its re- . . . 1... ... ations to tne oesciniesot tne country. In loot the people were called upon to decide whether they would .save the Government by the sword. The decision was in the affirmative, and after four years of bloody war, the oss of 400.000 lives, and the ex penditure of five thousand millions of treasure, the rebellion was sup pressed. Now, in 1868. the people are called upon to decide by the bal lot whether they will keep the gov ernment, which they -fought to save. out of the hands of men who fought to destroy it. , it this decision should be in the negative, the rebels who were defeated in the hel would tri umph at the ballot box, and the " loBt cause" would be regained; the rebel nag would be unfurled, and the pre cious blood which was so freely pour ed out in defense of the nation's hon or and the nation's life would prove to have been shed in vain. ' --: i Freemen! these are the Questions to be decided at the ballot box. i Are you ready?. The first charge is to be made one week from to-morrow.. In Pennsylvania, in Ohio and in Indiana votes will be cast that, if they do not virtually decide, will largely influence. the .November contest. , For tbe per formance of this great and important task, therefore, only week remains tor work. .
