We have some comments to make upon the figures, especially relating to Van derburgh Couoty, which we will reserve for another issue. We call attention to tho letter which we publish this morning from Breckinridge County, Kentucky, re garding the contest for the Democratic Congressional nomination in the Second District. The writer, who is one of the most reliable citizens cf Kentucky, in a private note, says: "I believe, if the Democrats of In diana had wi ncssed tho proceedings here yesterday, they would go over almost en manse to tho Republicans, and vote for our own brave UlyssesJ TI1E MAI.NE ELECTION. Some of them we believe, however, we heard of only one who was so ex traordinarily silly were proposing to bet that the Republican majority would not exceed 15,000. Editors Journal : , There is at the present time quite a lively contest going on in Democratic circles in this District. There are two candidates before the people of the district, both Democrats, seeking the nomination of the Convention to bo held at Greenville on the 1st of October, for Congress, Mr. W. N. N. Sweeney, of Owensboro, and Mr. Henry D. Mcllenry pf Hartford. These two men fitly repiesent the two elements of the Democratic party of Kentucky. Sweeney in 1S60 was a Breckcnridf e Democrat, and although he did not go into armed rebellion, he was, during the whole war, an ardent sympathizer with the rebel cause, and a bitter unrelenting opponent oi the war for the preservation of the Government. In fact, so warm was he in tho rebel cause, that Kenj een' wa3 to loyal tor hiin and he fled to more congenial associations in Canada. On tho other hand, Mcllenry in 1860 was for Bell and Everett, and up to 1S64-5 acted with the Union party, and was during the war. a "prominent member of the Kentucky, Legislature. But whilst there in March, 1862, he committed the unpardonable crime of voting for the famous expatriation act, which simply enacted that all citizens of Kentucky, who were then, or might thereafter, enter into the service, either in a civil or military capacity, of tho so-called Confederate States or Provisional Government of Kentucky, or give voluntary aid to those in arms against the United States, should be deemed to have expatriate! themselves. On last Saturday they met here in debate. It was in vain that McIIen-

and their sympathizers during the war could Dot iorgivc.
They managed to maite a complete muddle of the reconstruction and fll fiuostions. Bat the thinsr that drew forth the most vociferous applause was the assertion of Mr. Sweeney that the sooner every man who was for Ijcneral Urant ana the Congressional plan of reconstrue tinn married a niffzer wench and emigrated to Africa, the better would be tor him. . Of course, they dared , not " kick against the pricks." : McIIenrvV friends claimed that he was defeated simply because he had at one. time been a Union man. and that such, action as this would ruin all the fair prospects of the Dem ocrats ot Indiana and the JNortuWcst. All this afforded the " Rads " in finite amusement. They eDjoyed it hugely. KAMBLER From i'lko County. Pktrksburg, Ind., Sept. 16, 1838. Editors Journal: To-day General Ban. Set Pike down for an increas ed majority for the right. xours, &c, JblLO. Yeatcu and Xiblack. Washington, Daviess Co., 1 Sept. 16, 1868. j Editors Journal: The joint discussion between Gen James C. Veatch and Judge Wm. E. Niblack, which has for some time past been thrust in our face by enthu siastic Democrats as the time when our policy would ba utterly demolished, along with' our candidate, has taken place. But never did a Union victory make them look so downcast and disheartened as now. Judge N led off in a one hour and a quarter speech; in other words. he spoke his piece," being composed of the same old twaddle which he has been neddlm? around this District for the last fonr years. He, like all the rest of the small guns, took or maintained no affirmative position, but dwelt, not on what be bad done and proposed dome. but on what he had not done, and did not intend doing. He seemed to pos sess not one single idea of government, and proved most conclusively he is ono of that class who can neither pro pose nor plan. During his speech, several ot the distinguished JJemo cratic leaders got behind the Judge's desk, and when he appeared to be eiv i"g out or getting befogged, beat the I tenches furwuslu with sticl-s. but no response came from the crowd that was before him, and no one could help bat see his manifest inability to make a good political speech. At the close of his haranpue, the General occupied the noor lor one nour ana a nan, making one of the finest political speeches ever listened to, perfectly and comletely annihilating his weak opponent. He took up the Judge's record, charging and proving most conclusively all he said. He frequently turned to the Judfie, and asked him whether he did not vote for certain bills or make cer tain speeches. The Judge would iuvariably deny them positively. Then the General would quickly turn to his documents and read the proofs of his assertion. Then, turning to the Jnrlif with that inimit.ihlo smile, he would say, "No doubt you forget, Judge," amid the roars of launter and the universal cheering indeed, trom the first to the last, the audience we hnar;nn. ,.,) laughing not artificial cheers, but genuine, hearty, spontaneous cheering; and there the poor Judge sat like a criminal before a jury, and no one could look upon his face and see his suffering without pity. Even the Democracy admit that he has not the talent to meet General Veatch; yet if he had been honorable, faithful, and patriotic, and had given aid to our cause, he might do some better. Iu his fifteen minutes reply, he became perfectly furious, charging the General with unfairness pleading and begging most pitiful to behold bringing forward that poor, miserable, feeble piea, let by gones be bygones," to help him out, and asking us to forget the past as he appeared to have done, so conveniently for himself. We think no man was ever so badly demolished before.' None deny the fact. At nieht flpn Wonnn trtftAa an eloquent speech to the Grant Club of mis piace. . , . Our cause is prospering better than we could expect. Daviess, we think, will give eatch a small majority, lours, enthusiastically, X. KEPTJB11C1X 1XD DEMOCRATIC TAT. iTIOX.
