' ''. . k-: Southwestern District T air. Final preparRtions were made yesterday for the opening of the Southwestern District Fair to-day, under the most favorable auspices Already we note a number of strangers in the city to contribute1 to the interest of the occasion. ' To-day will be devoted to the perfecting of entries and the arrangement of articles,' and to-morrow the Fair will be fully under way, The weather promises to be fair,' and we have no doubt the attendance will be large. The Railroad Company will famish every facility for visiting the grounds convenientlyand cheaply', and all needful arrangements have been made for the - accommodation and entertainment of visitors. Go every one. "r ? Befoee Esq. Walker. Yesterday a warrant was issued by Esq. Walker against Anson Warner on a charge of mortally wounamg Charles W . Long. Warner was not able to appear, hence the case was continued An affidavit was s filed with Esq. Walker against Louta Folts, charging him with shooting at Peter jSpcckt with intent to kill. . An affidavit was also filed agaisst Auguat Claushide, charging that he stabbed and mortally wounded Anson Warner. The cases were all continu cd, and will he heard as .soon as pos siblc. . Claushide was released on bail, yesterday evening, to appear to day. r "... - : ' . .;:: Recorder's Court. Nick Sorsiner appeared before the Recorder on a charge of drunkenness yesterday, tor which, in fine and cost, he was. charg ed 45. . ; , ; ...r, :; Kate Winters, on charge of drunk enness, was charged $5 C5, which she paid. Harriet Hardin, on a similar charge,, answered, and ! had $5 C5 charged to her account, which she paid and went on her way rejoicing. Catharine, McGraw, on a charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. was taxed in fine and cost $5 Go. Not having the cash to liquidate the claim, she was sent to the lock-up. Al. MoAlister and wife, on a charge of drunkenness and disorderly conduct, were each fined and costed, the one in the sum of $6 25, and the other $7 25. It will probably teach them a lesson for the future. ; . . The Affair at Bellevue. The shooting and cutting affair at Bellevue on Sunday evening, proves to have been quite a serious one. !Mr. Charles W. Long was shot, as before stated in this paper,'" and no doubt mortally wounded, j ..Anson Warner was cut dangerously, and it ia thought he cannot live; indeed, it was. report ed on the fctreet yesterday evening that he was dead, but the report was premature. No hopes were entertained, of his or Long's recovery yesterday evening. , It was indeed an unfortunate . affair. A legal . investigation will take place as soon as it can be had. Until then it will be prudent to make no comments. - Another Runaway. A horse and buggy went dashing up Main Street yesterday evening at a frightful speed, and to the consternation of the multitudes of people wtio thronged the sidewalks. The horses attempted to turn onto Third Street,, but the buggy flew over, and . the momentum carrfed the horse . with; fearful force against the corner, of Bridwell's drug store, knocking him off his feet. He immediately got to his ftet again, and was on the point of starting off again, when he . .was secured. Strangely enough, the buggy did not- seem to be in the least damaged. ,We could not ascertain where the horse started from, or, if any one had been ia the buggy; but we presume not, as, these runaways are generally the results of leaving horse3 standing loose on the streets, a habit that, should be sup pressed. A . . . Fine Grain Warehouse. Messrs. A small squad of Second and Third Ward Democrats met at the Third Street Engine House last night. The squads were doctored (?) up, but could not, for all that, make a respectable appearance as far a numbers were conoern.ed.. We are gratified to announce that the opening of the dramatic sea eon at the Evansville Opera. House last night was a complete success The audience was quite large, and composed the elite of the city. The parouotte and dress circle were fully two-thirds full, with a large number in tho family circle and gallery. Th play was mounted in most elegant stylo-both: in scenery and costumes The leading characters, by Mr. Gott hold as Richelieu and Miss" Rick cords a Julia De Mortimer, were very well sustained. . Many passages of Richelieu, were rendered with superior force and ability, and brought down the house with warm applause. Mr. Gotthold could, how everi improve, we, think, on the make up of his personal appearance. His face was a little too plain to his fami liar friends. Miss Rickcords wa3 mo3t charming in her style ; and action. Her voice at times was rather weak. but in relating to Richelieu her in terview with the King, she rose abso lutely to the sublime, and' again in her scorn and defiance of Baradas She cannot fail to become a favorite with theatre goers. Mr. Cooper filled the place of another as the Chevclier De Mauprat, and while his acting was good and his voice fair, he appeared rather light for tho rU. Mr. C. F. Buck, as Louis XIII, while display ing fair talent, was hardly suited to the role. The characters of Francois, by Miss 1 Georgia Lopez, and Marion De Lorme, by Mis3 Mary E. Bryer were very favorably received, little more vivacity in the style of the ambitious page would have added to the piquency of the role. Count Do Baradas was very fairly represented after the first act. Taken as t whole, the play was admirably pre sented, and was received with very genera! satisfaction. Before the. last act Mr,, Gotthold ,waa called before the. drop curtain and made a very suggestive speech. After thanking the audience for their attendance and the compliment shown him and his corps dramattqne, he gave the assurance that the company would do their duty if the communi ty would do its.: His remarks were received with manifest approbation f We congratulate the lovers f- the drama in this city on having secured a corps of artists superior in every particular to any that has ever ap peared upon an Evansville stage The. entire company gave token of good principle as well as good cul ture, and we are certain that it is the aim of the lessee and man ager, Mr. ? Gotthold, to , elevate the character of the dramatic representa tions in his eity. We hope our peo ple will liberally sustain him in his efforts. .To-night and to-morrow night the Opera House will be occupied by the great mimic and carrieaturist, Alf. Burnett, and on Thursday night "Richelieu " will be repeated, with an unequaled cast of charcters.
