chants inform us that TmsinesS InYrTe city ia slightly reviving, and sales are increasing. We have noticed that the packets for the last three days have gone out full of freight, chiefly purchased in this city. When the Fall trade opens and cotton commences moving, we may expect lively times and a greater abundance of money. So mote it be.

Commissioners' Court. The Commissioners' Court has adjourned "over until Mojaday, the 21st inst. Commissioner Bower is seriously sick, and Commissioner Parrett is just recovering from a severe illness. For theso reasons, and on account of the District Fair, which occurs next week, the Court took a recess till the time above indicated.

Health of the City. The health of the city for some weeks past has been excellent, and the mortality list very light not having averaged more than one a day for several weeks past. We doubt if there is another city ia the United States of 30,000 inhabitants which can boast of as much exemption from sickness and death as this.

Dry It Up. There is a noisome mud-holo or hog wallow in the gutter on Locust Street, at the mouth of the alley leading from Main to Locust Street, between First and Second Streets, which should he dried up. This can readily be done, as there is an iron grated inlet leading into the sewer at that point, but which is choked up by rubbish and mud. It would require but little time or labor to open this inlet, and abate this peatilent nuisance. Lefitbedone. Alf, Burnett's Lectures. Our people should bear in mind that Alf. Burnett, the greatest mimic in the world, and the most perfect delineator of excentrie characters in existence, will give two of his inimitable entertainments in the Evansville Opera House, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights of next week, for the benefit of the Library Association. The object ia one that commends itself to the liberal patronage of all who feel an interest in the Library Association, and wo hope to see

the Upera House crowded on that occasion. Reserved scats can be secured without extra charge at the Opera House ofiice, and at Geo. W. Warren's mnsie store, this afternoon. Pole Raising. The Grant pole that the inclemency of the weather on Tuesday evening prevented from being raised, near the residence of Mrs. Rost-ncranz, was last night raised in fine style and without the slightest trouble. The Republicans of the Ninth Ward turned out in considerable numbers, and after their object was accomplished, and as the noble names of Grant and Colfax waved in the breeze, and the Stars and Stripes fluttered in graceful folds beneath, loud cheers for our patriotic standard bearers made the welkin ring. Captain Cassavant then made a short, sensible and stirring speech, after which the rowd dispersed.

Assault and Battery and a Speedy Exit. A man, whose name was not ascertained, committed an assault and battery two or three days ago on Mr. Clarke, who lives on Dr. Walker's farm. It appears the Doctor had some fine peaches, and had instructed Mr. Clarke to give a few to such persons as desired. Instead of being satisfied with this generous offer, persons were in the habit of going with baskets and bags, at night, and helping themselves, and some even in daylight ; and, to facilitate their efforts, had killed the dog on the premises. On the day of the assault and battery, Mr. Clarke found this man. who was an employe as wheeler in a brick

yard in the vicinity, coming ' out of

the orchard with'a supply of peaches. Clarke told him he must not go in there again, whereupon the fellow assaulted him and used him pretty roughly. Complaint was entered before Justice Walker, and a warrant was issued, but the accused did not stay to seo it. He " lit out " suddenly for parti unknown, and has not since been heard of. A" Dull Day. The moist state of the weather yesterday had a depressing influence on city items, and they were nearly as scarce as hen's teeth. The Recorder's Court did not furnish

a single item, and the Recorder waited, solitary and alone in his temple, for something to turn up, presenting

much the appearance of patienee on a monument. . The J ustices' Courts were alike barren of . interest. Justice Walker had a nibble Wednesday evening, which he expected to convert into roast beef yesterday, but he experienced a realization of the adage, " There ia many a slip betwixt cup and lip." There was nothing of general public interest transpiring in the Common Pleas Court yesterday. One or two cases in which Judge Johnson had been counsel, were certified to the Circuit Court. Several demurrers and answers were filed, and one or two judgments taken by default. . ,C'se of the Mutual Life, Fire, and Marine Insurance Company vs. WUliam XPage et al., was tried by a jury. Aftej the evidence had been heard, the arguments of counsel heard, and the charge of the Court had been made, the plaintiff dismissed the case upon what grounds exactly we did not ascertain. i

Affairs in Tennessee. From a

d hero yesterday "n thai trouble

aud hloodsneu mTYl trevails m reo-

nesee on the line of that river. On

Sunday night last, George Harding,

represented lo be a Kn Klux, was waylaid and shot while going home from church, at Savannah. Another shooting affair occurred at Swallow Bluffs, where eight or ten shots wero fired, and two men were woinded. It was also reported that the bond given by the two parties to keep the peace towards each other, had been torn up, and it was expected that hostilities would again be resumed. The Ku Klux, since the New York Convention, have grown very bold and defiant. Seymour and Blair is their battle cry. "In tub Midst of Life we are in Death." This trite saying was mournfully illustrated on Wednesday, in the neighborhood of Frank Wil

liamson's, in Union Township. A

lady, whose name our informant did not remember, was in the act of putting on her dress. As she raised her arm to put it through the sleeve she exclaimed, "Oh, my God!" and falling down, immediately expired. Her

husband and others were present at

the time. She was buried yesterday afternoon. ' . t . - Robbed. A man named Nunnhemeir, a foundrymaD, who boarded

at Engle's, left $110 in the pocket of

his Sunday breeches. On going to get some money out, he discovered that he had been robbed of the whole amount. No clue to " the thief has been obtained. This is a hard case indeed, as it was the hard earnings of a poor man, and all he had. o A Failure. A loud call was made in the " organ " yesterday morning for a rally of the Democracy at the Third Street Engine last night. We called around at eight o'clock or later and found only George Stackhouse and one other man, whom he was trying to induce to take a life policy. The Democracy did not seem to rally

f worth a cent. What's the matter?

Aauutemtitti. Tn& New Opera House Second Night. We were mortified to see a very meagre audience at the Opera

IIou.c last night, being much smaller

than on the opening n'ght, notwithstanding the night was pleasant, and

nothing going on to draw the people away. The bill presented was unquestionably one of the best ever pre

sented to an Evansville audience, and

the whole programme was well executed.

"The Singers Welcome," by the

Liederkranz, was a masterly performance, and the " Rhine Maidens," by

Mr. and Mrs. Schlessinger, was well

executed.

The Morning Call, by Mr. Gotthold

an3 Miss Rickcord3, was the " tit bit" of the evening. Miss Rickcords in her debut, made a decided hit. She

lacked a little in voice, which may be

excused in a first appearance in a new

Hali. She has the bearing and ad

dress on the stage of a true lady, and we predict for her an immense popu

larity in this city. All the other per

formances were favorably received. The Shanghai Quartette was abun

dantly funny. To-night the Lieder

kranz appear in their great Opera, entitled the "Czar and Carpenter," which was given in the Turner Hall in April last, and received with such universal favor.

This delightful opera has been put upon the stage of the Opera House by the Directors at a heavy expense, in order to afford our citizens an opportunity to hear this gem of music in a hall acoustically adapted to its

production, and they deserve a crowded house. Burglars Still Operating. On Wednesday night the grocery of Joseph Juergensmier, corner of Vine and Third Streets, was entered, and the cash drawer robbed of $5 in spurious postal currency. Juergensmier had fortunately removed all his good money to a place of safety. There is a large number of scallawags and carpet-baggers, brought here, no doubt, to vote the Democratic tic ket, loafing about the city, who are thus endeavoring to "turn an honest penny." They are not likely to be caught. Ah attempt was also made to enter the grocery of George nof, corner of First and Elm, but they made so much noise that they awoke the family and were scared off. LOCAL XJOTICE3. The Happiest Man in Town. Our artistic friend, McGrew, well known a one of the heads of the proftsn'on. No. 7 West First Street, is again alone in business, and with the service of the best talent in the country, he will bo enabled to do full justice lo his friends and customers. Give him a call.

Attention, Grant Guards. The Grant Guards and all Republican citizens of the Second Ward will meet at Lant's ebop on Saturday evening, September 12. - Business of importance will be transacted. " Rally 'round the flag, boys -rally once again." . .. '-' Gored by an Ox. A man named Houk or Myers, as different reports had it, was gored by an ox yesterday, m Carpenter's field, in the abdomen, lie was carried home, and surgical aid summoned. His recovery is considered doubtful. Under CovEB,-McReyD0lds' new building, on Third Street, between Locust and Walnut, is under coyer It will make a handsome business house, and add greatly to the appearance of that square.
