" The Chicago Times denies that the plank in the Copperhead platform which culls for " equal taxation of every Vpecies of property " was intended to include real estate. 5 It alleges that farms and houses and lots cannot be taxed by the United States Government, notwithstanding they have been so taxed repeatedly, and no longer ago than 1S62. But suppose we admit that real estate is not included. The platform nevertheless requires that flour and whisky shall be taxed equally, and beef and tobacco be taxed equally, that poultry and petroleum be taxed equally, that pianos and potatocs.be taxed equally, that carriages and cucumbers be taxed equally, and that greenbacks and bonds be taxed equally each according to its real value. This is equality of taxation with a vengeance. The New York Express, Democratic, attributes the overwhelming Republican majority in Vermont to the fact that the " reading and speaking have been in Vermont all one side." This is a damaging admission. They have schools, churches and newspapers iu Vcrment, but none of them aid the Democrats. The people of Vermont arc among the most intelligent of those in any State in the Union, and by this Democratic authority their intelligence is all Republican. - The Democracy, we arc left to infer, are the small balance of unintelligent and corrupt people which remain.-) in every community Campaign Notes. In his stumping lour over the State, we understand he has much to say ' by ' way of exhortation and kindness to the soldiers. By way of introduction to the distinguished gen tleman, we give'.the following extract. giving ms views upon tne war ana the soldiers, in the House of Repre sentatives of Indiana, February 1, 18C2: " The North Jiad fostered and strengthened a Jiostile feeling againtt he South, until it lund become a rank ling Jiatred, as shown by the laws passed by tJie Northern States. OR MONEY, OR ARMS, or consent TO ANY MEASURE THAT WILL LEAD to a conflict." See Brevier Legisative lieports, volume 4, page 154-o. This gentleman is equally consist ent in other matters. As late as 1SG3, he was violently opposed to green backs, and on Monday, the 26th day of January, in that year, introduced the following resolution in the House of Representatives : By Mr. Packard : Whereas, Section seven of article eleven of the Constitution of the State of Indiana, reads as follows: All bills or notes issued as money shall be, at all times, redeemable in gold and silver, and no law shall be passed sanctioning, directly or indirectly, the suspension by any bank or banking company of specie payments:" therefore, Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire and report, at their earliest convenience, whether the Bank of the State of Indiana has not, by relusing to redeem its notes in gold and silver, and instead thereof redeeming them in United States Treasury notes, violated the Constitution of the State, and worked a f orfeiture of its charter. His impudence in this matter is fully equal to his begging in honnied sentences for soldiers' votes. The Ku Klax Klaa in Kentucky. Special Telegram to the Commercial. Bowling Green, Ky., Sept. 7 The outrages of the Ku Kiux Klan in this part of Kentucky are exciting the utmost alarm in all classes of society. On Saturday night they entered the house of Glasgow William, formerly a Union soldier, in Franklin County, and shot him dead, spattering his brains over his wife, who was pleading for his life. . The night previous they burned a large mill rnd woojen factory belonging to a community of Shakers at bouth Union. The . Shakers, who were opposed to the rebellion, have been the objects of the most merciless rebel persecution ever since the close of the war. Their houses have been burnt, their animals poisoned, their fences torn down, and their crops destroyed. Their loss by the recent tire is over two hundred thousand uuiiars. Last niffht a neero in T ty, who bad been in the Federal armv ederal k.h fat An from hia i .1 ID. anil this, morning nis aeaa DOdy was found hanging on a neighboring tree. Not a night passes but what some outrage is committed against the Union men. It is has been proclaimed, time and again, by the Ku Klux Klan, that no man who was in the Federal army can live in this part of Kentucky, and that-determination is being carried into effect. Dow Indiana Is to be Carried for the Ku-KInx Nominees. From the Chicago Tribune.l Fort Wayne, Ind, Sept. 4, 1SGS. The circular, as published in this morning's Iribunc. from Joe McDon ald and others, and sent to Republi cans iu Indianapolis, for the ostensible purpose of procuring a fair election is refreshingly cool, in view of the fact that the Democratic KuKlux organization, known as " White Boys in Blue." which have made, as they suppose, full and complete ar rangements to take charge of the polls oh election day at Indianapolis and some other cities and towns to various parts of the State; and this circular is gotten up for the purpose of affording an excuse to the Kn-KIux to have a row of the tallest kind. It is claimed bv the Democracy in Indianapolis that the White Roys in Blue are organized from soldiers, vfion if ii faol that not more than twenty-five have ever been honorably discharged from the army, while many are known to the detectives as deserters, bounty-jumpers, thieves and los-fers, who are loyal enough to receive from the .uamocratic iunu tne sum of $4:2 and unitorm lor tne campaign. It is also known -that there are no loyal men in the organization at the State capital. - Arms have been provided lor them, and they are expected to fight if this circular does' not answer the purpose of intimida tion sufficiently to give them control without. To further aid in this laudable Ku Klux undertakings few days since there was received over the Bellefontaine Railroad nearly $jO,OUU, which has been distributed to the various local Democratic committees where it will do any cood towards carrvme the State election, and one 01 their main efforts on election day will be to trade vote3 for Grant and Col fax and get votes for Congressmen and members of the Legislature in close districts. . The guise under which they attempt the role, of- Aminidab-Sleek is too transparent, and will in no wise serve them now. for their true border ruf fian character is too well known. Impressions of Kvansrllle. The local editor of the Indianapolis Journal, who was present at our County Convention on -the 4tl iost. writes to that paper a glowing account of the Convention and the Torchlight Procession, and concludes his letter with the following complimentary notice of our city: THE CITY OF EVANSVILLE la more like a city "than' any other place in the State. The Ohio River, which, in the peculiar economy of nature, runs past lasge cities, gives it the ability, to carry on a heavy trade. North and South, with the Missis sippi and ud the Cumberland. Sev eral large steamers lie at its wharf all the time, and the commercial import ance of the place is rapidly increas ing. I he people are alive to their business interests. There is plenty of capital and none of it sluggish. It is ready for prompt investment, whenever a good - opening' is presented. The completion of' the EvansTille. Henderson and Nash ville Railroad, - now fairly' under way. will mark an epoch in the his tory of the Crescent City. It has long lines of closely built business houses; it has beautiful residences and spacious yards; it has an earnest business community, largely composed of Germans: and a society unexcelled in the State. It has a Street Railway Company, operating a long line, and which is constantly stretching out its iron nrtgjrs. and taking into the mar ket large unoccupied tracts of land. whicn hnd ready sale at good figures. indicative of a feeling of confidence in the tuture ot the place, it has a people of eenerous impulses and un bounded hospitality; not too modest in their estimate of the importance of their own city, and with good reason, as every visitor will concede; and last, but not least, it has the most gorgeous crop ot poles, ot every politicsGrant and Colfax, and Seymour and Blair -to be found outside of Brown County, where poles are the staple product. The Republicans are alive and earnest. They feel confident of the County and the District, and are sure of beiDg one of the vanguard in leading the electoral vote c the btatc to form the triumphant column Lor Grant and Colfax. I must not close without mentioning the Evansvillo Journal. Under the management of Mr. F.M.Thayer, formerly of Indianapolis, and Colonel John W. Foster, it has grown to bo a newspaper of no second rate influence. It has a fine marble front building adjoining the new opera house, on Locust ' Street and First, which would do credit to any publishing establishment in the West. The Journal deals no faint blows at the Lost Cause, and whoa the returns oome in irom the Pocket its political influence will be acknowledged. ' - LlGE.
