1TTTT JLiL VOL. XIX.. EUROPE. By .Atla.iitic? Twlejyrapli.. London. Sept. 5 Yesterday, Hon. Itsverdy Johnson, American Minister, delivered another fpsech in Sheffield. This speech was in reply to an address presented by the corporate authorities of the city. Mr. Johnson said that in the discharge cf the du ties of this oosition. he anticipated no trouble, sn far as the nreservaticn of peacefal relations between the United States and England was concerned, but the high and deserved reputafioa achieved by his illustrious prelocessor, Mr. Adams, had made d.fflcult a task of succeeding him with equal acceptability; the highest aim of his mission would be to do as well. The speaker repeated what he said yesterdav. that a rupture ot the friendly re lations now existing between the Uni ted States and Great Britain would be impossible, on account of identity of race, language and aspirations. The character of Queen Victoria forbade the possibility of such a rupture. Mr. Johnson refuted the assertion of Mr. Ilpebnck, one of the Representatives in the House of Commons from Sheffield, that the people of the United States : were ' heterogenous. He maintained that the foreign emigrants who landed on the American fchorcs, all merged in one great nation and that nation was English, and they did not violate the community by importing vices with them. Tho Time has a lengthy editorial on the subject of Johnson's recent speeches at Sheffield. It comments favorably oa his declarations regarding the heteroeeniousness of the American people, and thinks that tho i people ol the United otate3 are as much an English unit as the people of England, where the Irish, Scotch, Freuch and Germans make so largo a share of the population. Referring incidentally to the gen eral elections soon to occur in Eng land, tho 3fYiesays: Whatever may be tho result, the tamo rec;procify of feelings between the United States and Great Britain is certain to ensue. Clark County, Standard of the 29th, has a report that a bloody tragedy occurred last week in Lewisville, Lafayette County, the extrcma southwest county in the State, resulting in the death of seven negroes and five white men. The circumstances of the case were substantially as follows: A negro man had committed a horrid outrage upon a little girl thirteen years old, and the citizens executed summary punishment upon him by hanging. A brother of tho negro went to town after the execution, and behaved himself ia a very insu'tmg and riotous utiuner, and using threats against those who had hung his brother. The people of the plae3, alter bearing his insults for some time, hung him also. Tho negroes then, of the town and neighborhood, collected together, to the number of forty or fifty, ani made a general attack upon the town, which was met by the citizens, with the above result. Forrest's Letter to the Clncln. nail Commercial. NAsnviLLE, Sept. 5. The following is a copy of General Forrest's letter to Mr. Woodward, correspondent ol tho Cincinnati Commercial: Memttus, Sept. :i, lfi8. Dear Sir I have just read your letter in the Commercial, giving a report of our conversation on Friday last. I do not think you would intentionally misrepresent me, but you have done so, and I suppose because you misunderstood my meaning. The portions of your letter to whieh I object are corrected in the following paragraphs. I promised the L- gislature my personal influence and aid in maintaining order and enforcing the laws. I have never advised the peop'e to resist any law, but to submit to the laws until they can be corrected by lawful legislation. I said the militia would cccasion no trouble unless they violated the law by carrying out the Governor's proc lamation, which 1 believe to Do unconstitutional and in vio'ation of law in shooting men down without trial, as recommended in that proclamation. I said it was reported, and I believed the report, that there are forty thousand Ku Ivlux in Tennessee, and I believe the organization stronger iu other States. 1 meant to imply, when I said that the Ku-Klux recognize the Federal Government, that they would obey all State laws. They recognize all lawsAand will obey them soj I have been informed in protecting psaceable citizens from oppression from any quarter. I did not say that any man's house was picketed. I did not mean to convey the idea that I would raise any troops, and more than that, no man could do it in five days, even if they were organized. I said that Grant was at Hoily Spring, and not a Corinth. I said the chaigo against him was false, and did not use the word liar. I cannot consent to remain silent in the matter, for if I did so, under an incorrect impression of my personal views. I might fee looked upon as one desiring a conflict, when in truth I am so adverse to anything of the kind that I will make any honorable sacrifice to avoid it. . Hoping that I may have this explanation placed before your readers, I remain, very respectfully, . N. B. Forrest. What Gen. Forrest terms a proclamation by Gov. Brownlow, was simply an editorial of the Knoxville Whig. The committee appointed by the Legislature to wait on -President Johnson consists of Senator Wisener and Representatives Ogee and Hamilton. The Militia Bill cannot pass the Senate in a shape to satisfy the House, and will probably fail altogether.
