CHEYENNE, WYOMING, August. Editors Journal: Our party, consisting of Hon. John Hill, M. C. from New Jersey; Lieut. Campion and wife; Reverends B.C. Magie and Joseph P. Tuttle, left Chicago, Monday P. M., via the Chicago & North-Western, for the Rocky Mountains. Tuesday afternoon we arrived at Omaha, and were soon moving with amazing rapidity toward the Great West. Arriving at Columbus, we failed to catch the enthusiasm of George Francis Train, and call it "the future center of the world." Nothing of interest transpired during our first night on the plains. The next morning at daybreak I stepped off the cars at Plum Creek, and was painfully reminded of something which, occurred at that p lace just a year before. As the engineer of "53" was coming into the above named place, with a heavy freight train, his engine was suddenly upset, and he was horribly mangled. The Indians, who were the authors of this mischief, scalped the helpless and suffering man, and threw him into the fire box. His fireman was served in the same way, and in a little time all that was left of two noble physiques, could be put in a box a foot square. The Indians next turned their attention to the contents of the csrs.in some of which they found gaily colored calicos. They tied one end of these to their horses, and then dashed over the prairies in mad delight. This is only one of many instances in which these worthless vagabonds have murdered and scalped respectable men. Extermination may sound harsh to the refined and cultivated who have read the wild theories of Cooper, but they will find that their theories will not work when they come to put them into practice. The night we passed Fort Kearney we learned that the soldiers had been driven in by the Sioux; and this is the way they are carrying on things with a high hand, all over this Western country, countenanced and encouraged by the inaction of the Government to take sharp and decisive measures for the benefit of its citizens The appearance of the country is monotonous. One becomes tired of looking at a dead level, occasionally relieved by bluffs. Several miles east of Sidney we saw some fine antelope, the engineers always giving the warning to the passeneera as if something was on the track. The enterprise of the U. P. R. R. is very striking, viewed in any aspect; but the fine, large brick machine shops, some accommodating thirty engines way out here on the plains, is especially noticable [sic]. As we were whirled rapidly along, we soon found that we were pretty well up in the world, a fact which we wish our friends in the States to notice. At this place we are about 5,000 feet above the sea. Here Lieut. Cam- pion and wife left us for Fort Russell, JUNIUS.
