Independence in Council; The Republicans of Independence held a large and enthusiastic meeting on Tuesday night, J. II. 'Bemer in the Chair, and Charles W. Lang, Secretary. After Borne di-scussion, the meeting went into the election of officers, which resulted in the election of Charles W. Lang as Captain, F. Lenner, 1st Lieutenant, and Wm. Koch, 2d Lieutenant; Christ. II.1 Fuchs, Orderly Sergeant ; James Veach, 1st Duty Sergeant; Joseph Peterson, 2d Sergeant; Hugh Hardy, 3d Sergeant; Peter ness,. 4th Sergeant: " "J. B. Grant, 5th Sergeant. A committofli consisting of Alex. Simpson and Peter Hess; were appointed to confer with the committee of the Babytown Club, with instructions to : report to the Captain of the .Independence ; Club. Sixty names were enrolled, after which J the meeting adjourned. ; German Methodist Conference. The German Metbolist Conference meets.' in the German Methodist Church at 9 o'clock this morning. Bishop Kingdey is in the city,' and will preside. The proceedings of the conference will be -carried on n the English language. Preaching each evening during the week in the German language., , ; Bishop Kingsley was present at the attempt to raise the tall Grant pole on lower Water Street yesterday evening, and, like all good patriots,, was mortified by the disaster that attended the effort. Like the venerable Bishop Simpson, : and most other good men, he is on the side of right. . Young Mes's Grant Cavalry. The Young Men'sGrant Cavalry turned out for drill yesterday, with their uniform caps and lances. - They made a magnificent display. This company of young men, who will cast their first vote for President at the coming election, will create a sensation oh the night of the procession. The com-i. pany will be headed by a. grand chariot, bearing a young lady representing each State.- The young gentlemen are in earnest, and are working hard. I Cowardly. A man' from the country cheered for Grant and Colfax, at or near the head of Main Street, day before yesterday, when he was at once knocked down by some Democrat who stood near; causing quite a severe wound oo'tha head. The assaulting party made hi escape. ':
