Had the leaders of the Democratic party been more earnest for principle and less for plunder, no power on earth could ever have placed np in a minority. La Crosse Democrat. Soyrnonr asked a few day3 ago: "What claim have the Republicans urn the soldiers?" Certainly he has . n I. - i. none. He was Chairman of the Convention that declared the war a failure, and he wna the master-spirit of the anti-draft New York riots. Governor Andrew, three days before his death, said: "The tendency of the hour is toward Grant; and that is best. Grant is so square and honest a man that I believe he is bouLd to be right, anywhere." The Detroit free Press wants to know what Grant ha done toward reducing the expenses of the Government. "Saved millious to the Treasury," answers Andrew Johnson, and the Presi can cross-examine the witness.
