The most important business transacted by the County Commissioners, yesterilay, was to make an appropriation of $800 to build a bridge across Little Creek, in Center Township. They also made an appropriation of 2."i0 to improve the road from Cody's bridge to Locust Hill Cemetery. During the day they had under consideration the annual report of receipts and expenditures of the County for the past year, and in considering them fr'diu the " budget " for tho coining year. Tennessee Wheat. The steamer Tarascon brought to this city yesterday, '2?n' sacks of Tennessee wheat, shipped from Nashville. A sample has been shown us. It is of most excellent, quality. With such an abundant crop of wheat all over the United States, it cannot be possible that flour can be held at the famine prices that have ruiod for the last two or three years. Cheap bread will do more to relieve the pressure of hard times felt by the people, than any change in financial questions likely to be made by Congress. A splendid assortment of Note and Letter Paper at Journal Office. Emery's Court. Late on Tuesday evening Mary Hart, for provoking a ablo sister to commit an assault and battery, had a hearing in Justice EmeryV Court, and was fined 50 cent-', with costs. On the same day a man named liu'der, had a hearing before Justice Emery, on a charge of hav'ng stoned the houso of a sick woman in tho lower part of the city. The testimony failed to coBvict, and the accused was discharged. Visitors at the Crescent City Ki'RiNfis. .Some estimate of the number of visitors to tho Crescent City Springs ou Saturday, the fourth, may be made from the fact that over ."l were taken at the gate as entrance fees, showing that nearly 1,10( persons visited the grounds in addition to the large number that entered the grounds by way of the south grove, in which the picnic was held, most of whom visited the north grove during the day. The magnificent dinners set by Col. Wehler that day attracted a large number of guests to his dining room. Every delicacy of the season was served up in very superior style. JiEFORE UlSTKE WALKER. The three men, Millspaugh, Kobinson and Weiehel, against whom Henry Kramer had filed an affidavit for surety ot t he peace, appeared in Justice Walker's Court yesterday, when, after a free conversation and consideration, the matter was adjusted by the complaining witness withdrawing the i-oraplaint and paying one-half the cost, and the accused parties paying the balance. 1 1 would bo far wiser in many of these petty cases with which the justices are annoyed, if the parties would have a free consultation before the complaint is made or costs have accrued. A great many of them are of such a trivial character that they would be summarily dismissed, were it not that the justice and constables think they should have pay for their trouble, and, in order to cover costs, a nominal fine is inflicted. IlECOiuitfts Court. The Recorder being anxious to visit the rural districts, yesterday, to escape for a few hours the heat and dust and turmoil of the city, held court early yesterday morning, and dispensed justice and judgment to a pair of waiting penitents. Anthony Fatten, whose penchant for artificial teeth we made mention of yesterday, had a preliminary examination on a chaa-ge of grand larceny, to-wit.: stealing three patent artificial teeth and twenty-eight common artificial teeth from Dr. Hutchinson, full details of which we mentioned yesterday. He was held to answer in the
sum of $200, and in default was sent to abide the action of the grand jury, in Castle Miller. A Teutonic individual, whose name, in the absence of the Recorder we could not ascertain, was presented on a charge of being drunk and resisting the officer that arrested him. lie was relieved of $7, as a penalty for his disrespect to the laws and ordinances. In addition to this financial expense, he had previously experienced a sound rap from the policeman's " billy," which had prostrated him. Late Tuesday evening, the cases of Jennie Mathews, Caroline Young and Eliza McClure, three females of the African persuasion, residing on Clarke Street, were disposed of. The charge against them was for raising old Cain generally and disturbing the peace and quiet of the neighborhood in which they live. A fine of $1, with the usual costs, wa3 assesssd in each case. Two of the boys engaged in the sport of shooting through windows on Friday night last, were brought into court yesterday afternoon, but in consequence of the absence of the Recorder and the principal actor in tho mischief heretofore detailed, their cases were continued until all can be got into one fold. Clearing the Moutiis op tiie Sewers. A good work, that we sug gested some time ago, has at last been accomplished, to some extent at least, to-wit : the cleaning out of the mouths of the Sycamore and Main Street sewers. Ihe mouth of the bycamore sewer and the aquaduct leading thence to the river was full of filth, that emitted a most noisome odor of slops and debris from kitchens, and other filth sent down the sewer had accumulated in its mouth, creating a most villainous smell. This has been cleaned out, and when hauled away a material change in the atmosphere of that region will be experienced. The mouth of the Main Street sewer had been completely choked up with mud, gravel, brickbats, old boots, Ac, &e. These have been cleaned out, and the improvements made at the entrance to the inlets at the corners of Main and Water Streets, will prevent such a state of affairs in the future. A further improvement might be made on the wharf, by cleaning off the mud and dust in front of Humphrey's wharf boat, and removing old rudders and other nuisances that encumber it. Payson's Indelible Ink for sale at this office. Further Testimony. Another illustration of the great Scripture truth that "the way' of the transgressor is hard," was had in the case of a scurvy fellow, who, too parsimonious to pay his way into the picnic held by the St. John's Church, at the Crescent City Springs, and too lazy to go to the Free National Democratic Picnic at Parrett's Grove, where he rightfully belonged, climbed over the fence by the back way into the Crescent City Springs Grove. He had not been there long until he created a slight disturbance, and was summarily ejected. lie soon managed by some means to gain a second entrance.. As soon as he was discovered he was again ejected with his companion. The two proceeded down town, but before they separated managed to get into a quarrel between themselves, and the one who had created the only disturbance that had marred the festive scenes of the celebration at the Crescent City Springs, got a nice little whipping. It is hoped that he will act more wisely next time. Holding a " Crowner's 'Quest." We have had related to us a good joke - that occurred on, board the Tarascon on Saturday night, after leaving this port. A young man of delicate proportions, well known in Una city, but hailing from a rural village, tired out by two nights' and one day's jollification, laid himself down on the soft side of the carpet to sleep. At length he felt a heavy weight upon him, although asleep, and tried in vain to relieve himself. The oppression fncreased until he awoke, and found the steward and eleven other gentlemen from Africa sitting upon his body, and Mack Levi standing by taking a minute of the proceedings. Despite all his protestations of vitality, the jury returned a verdict," Died of a plethora of Fourth of July; The Orphans' Picnic. The excursion upon the Chattanooga to Spottsville, yesterday, by the orphans and indigent children of the city, was a pleasant affair. The day was ex cecdingly pleasant, and no accident occurred to mar the pleasure of the occasion, very little rain lell, not sufficient to interrupt the day's sport. A bountiful supply of provisions had been provided and donated, and be tween rambling through the woods, romping and fishing, the day was passed most joyfully. Among those who realized the pleasures of the day were those lone orphans so well known throughout the city Nathan, George, and Christopher. The boat returned about 7 o'clock, and all were pleased with the excursion.
Speculating!. There wa much speculation and discussion in Democratic circles yesterday respecting the probable nominee of the Democratic National Convention. Some excitement also prevailed. One gentleman, who had bet on Pendleten, being informed of the status of affairs, at 4 o'clock last evening exclaimed most reverently, " By G d, Hancock will never be President of these United States." Another unswerving and unterrified was told, fn great confidence, that Chase and Fred. Douglass had been nominated, when he exclaimed, with much candor and with like reverence, "I don't like the ticket much, but by G d I'll vote for them." The agony is becoming very intense. Died. The many friends of Mr. John Bingham, in this city and vicinity, will be deeply pained to learn that he has been bereaved of his fair young wife. Only one year a wife she, on the first anniversary of her marriage yielded up her life in giving life tocher first-born. This melancholy event occurred on Friday last, July. 3d. The deceased, a most amiable, beautiful and accomplished lady, was the daughter of Mr. E. II. Fairchild, Mr. Bingham's partner in business. Many hearts will sympathize with the young husband in this terrible bereavement, which cruely crushes the happiness of his life. , Personal. Among the strangers in the city yesterday we notice the following names registered at the Sherwood House: F. II. Kingsberry, of Indianapolis, Agent of the Star Union Line; Alex. Lemcke and wife, of Cincinnati, who return to make this city their home; Captain T. L. Lee, of the firm of Fowler, Lee & Co., wharf boat proprietors and forwarding and commission merchants, of Padncah, Ky.; Hon. Archie Dixon, of Henderson, and J. G. Bowman, United States District Assessor, of Vincennes. Mr. Ed. F. Finley, representing the great grain house of Srayser & Milton, of Louisville, arrived in the city last night and is stopping at the American House. Dr. Josh Cobb is still lingering in the city. There is sure to be a sufficient attraction.
An Extensive Bore. The work of boring for mineral or soft water at the Crescent City Springs, is progressing steadily, day and night. The work i3 rather the enlarging or reaming out of the old bore. The shaft, enlarged to four inches, has been sunk to the depth of one hundred and seventy feet, and now the workmen are engaged in reaming it out to the diameter of five inches, in order to admit copper tubing to prevent the caving in of the shaft. The machin ery runs by steam, and works day and night. Horticultural. In our Local Notice column will be found a call 'or a meeting of the Executive Com mittee of the Horticultural and Pomological Society of Vanderburgh County, at the office of Law & Anthes, on Friday next, at 10 a. m. It is hoped there will be a full attendance, as business of great importance is to be transacted. Rain. It rained all around the city yesterday. At Vincennes and as far east as Seymour, on the line of the O. & M. Railroad, heavy rains fell. A dense black cloud and heavy rain were visible for six or seven hours to the' south and ""southwest. A small selvage of the cloud overhung the city and a light rain fell, scarcely suf ficient to lay the dust. The atmosphere was hazy and foggy last night but the sky was almost clear. 1,0 OAX ITOTICES. Horticultural Society Meet. inq op Executive Committee.
