Yoorheejs, on being ipon for a speech at the Demo--invention, yesterday, said that ' be manifestly improper for iiake a speech at that time, always was a modest man. i. a little strange that he should so to speak when so many of his friends were in attendance. i iT is pretty evident that the majority of the Indiana delegation sold out Mr. Pknih.eton. The delegate?, according to instructions, agreed to vote for him as long as there waa a chaueo for his nomination, but just at the time other States were wheeling into line for PENDLETON, he is deserted by the Indiana delegation. New Books. i:i!Zll.ANI" TIIK BRAZILIANS, port rived l Historical aud Descriptive nicefenes. P.y i:ev. Jamks C. Fj.ktchkk and Rev. W. P. Ki idkr, 1. L). Illustrated I'V on hundred and fifty engravings. Eighth Edition revised aud enlarged. Iiotou: ViIttle, Knows Jfc Co. The authors of this volume have had most excellent opportunities for giving us a faithful delineation of the peculiar characteristics of Brazil and of its people, and they seem to have improved them to the utmost. Previous to the publication of their researches and observations, to the greater pAt of the people of this country, Brazil was as much an unknown land as the interior of Africa. Indeed, not near so much effort had been made to explore its interior, nor had so many volumes been written concerning it. Its attractions were unknown and uncared for, and the salubrity and healthiness of the cli mate not even suspected. So, to those who were attracted thither by traffic or other purposes, the beautiful harbor of Hio Janeiro must have occasioned the greatest surprise and pleasure, and to those who have not the opportunity of seeing it for them selves, Mr. Fletcher's descriptions afford almost eiiual gratification. It seems to have been the design of Mr. Fletcher to furnish his readers with a clear conception of the coun try physically its bays, mountains, vlleys, and rivers its salubrious and euitabl! climate its history and present government, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants. This is done in the narrative form, and has much the sama effect as though he had liiss readers with him as he journeyed through the country, and pointed ut to the in its many beauties of scenery, as well as the oddities of its inhabitants. The smallest details are not omitted, and when the book is finished and laid aside, one feels that he has traveled over Brazil, and is familiar with its geography, its people their character, customs and laws and their ruler as well. In short, tin . he thoroughly understands what before was to him an unknown land. Our Western peoplo are familiar with Ilio coffee, but very few of them su much as know whence it t.ornes, or by whom it is cultivated. If they will read Mr. Fletcher's book tiny will no longer be in ignorance on so interesting a subject. It is not our design to enter into anything like a criticism of the merits or demerits of the work. It possesses both, the former altogether overshadowing and almost obscuring the hitter. Our main design is to so call attention to it that it may be more extensively read. When our country is so flooded with useless and senseless novels, whose contents are eagerly devoured by the young of both sexes, it .seems to us the especial duty of every good citizen certainly of every intelligent parent to direct their minds to such literature as will not only afford equal delight, but impart, in addition, information that will prove of inestimable value all through life, h'ueh a book all will find in ' Brazil and the llrazilians." So interwoven is its history, with its mountain and xea shore scenery, that one is comprehended and understood while the beauty and sublimity of the other is gazed at and admired. Its laws arc read and undcratood, and the characteristics of the people comprehended, while we arc interested in their dealings with each other and their manner of daily living. There is still another point to which, as an Indianian, we may call attention. Mr. Fletcher is a native of this Stat.:. Its list of authors is very small. We are not so sure but what he may be said to stand at the head of tho list. The popularity of his hook, as indicated by the number of editions through which it has passed, assigns him that position. His success, therefore, in some degree, reflects honor upon the State of his nativity, and in it all its citizens must entertain a feeling of pride. IN THE SCHOOL ROOM Chapters o I he Philosophy of Teaching, by John S Hint, L. U l. Philadelphia, Ei.dkux, on S. K V I.HO I lir.il. lill l, SI .1. There are few works which have appeared during the present season which will attract as much attention anon,; tho thinkers and educators, as this littles volume of Prof. Hunt. The Philosophy of Teaching and its proper application in the every day practice of the school-room and the family, is too little studied and consequently very little understood. The perusal of Prof. Hunt's work will no, fail to awaken a new interest and tend to deepen research. The work is a searching exposition of the profession of teaching as pursued ia the United States, which is, perhaps, the most rational of any in the world, and yet lulls snort ol what it ought to be. TI,a -,it r f fAor-Mn. oWk i. J he ait of teaching although pur -
sued for thousands of years and by
the greatest intellects, still appears to fall far shorter of perfection than any other learned profession. The reason, our author says, msy be found in the object it works upon mind, entangible spirit full of force and increasing vitality and power. "Chiseling the rude marble into the finished statue, giving the impression of the seal upon the wax; pouring water into an empty vessel;" all these similes lack one essential clement of likeness. The mind is, indeed, iu one sense, empty, and needs to bo filled. It is yielding. and needs to be impressed. It is rude, and needs polishing. But t is not a positive recipient of external influences. It is in itself a living power. It is acted upon only by stirring up its own activity. The teacher is doing his work, only so far as he gets work from the scholar. The teacher is not only to draw out the resources of the scholar: he must put in as well as draw out. Learning is a growth, and teaching is doing whatever is neccs sary to cause that growth. Upon these general principles the work is constructed and elaborated with twenty-eight instructive chapters. They combine practical instruction with philosophic precept so well and judiciously arranged that the oldest veteran may profit by their perusal The work is a long step in advance of anything we have yet seen on the sci ence of primary and intermediate class teaching. It concludes with a long and able " argument for common schools." We commend it to the favorable no tice of all instructors of youth. 'TREATISE ON GEOMETRY AND TRIG ONOMETRY: ForCollejes, Schools and Private Students. Written for tbe mathemat ieal coiuse ot Joskph Ray, M. D., by Ei.i T. Tappan, M. A., Proressor orMm euiatics, Ohio University. Cincinnati Sargent, Wilson A Hi.nklk. This is one of the well-known Eclec tic Educational Series, which is a good guarantee of its general correctness, and the neatness and substantial character of its mechanical execution An examination of this work shows that advantage has been taken of the progress which has been made in the science of higher mathematics and the new light which has been thrown upon this most interesting of its studies. It is claimed that decided improvements have been made in this book, in the arrangement of topics the division of subjects, the conve nience for reference, &c. The tables of logarithms are especially valuable on account of their being carefully corrected. We think the merits of the work will highly commend it to the favorable consideration of teach ers. THE N EVERS, and other Stories. ton: JlKNKY JtiOVT. BosTHREE CFlRlSTMAS DAYS : a Story These are two interesting little vol umes, recently issued from the fruit ful press of this favorite publisher of the children. We know of no estab lishment in the country which 13 doing a better work in supplying the youth of the nation with beautifu and entertaining reading, than Henry Iioyt, of Boston. We advise al parents and Sabbath School Superin tendants to send for his catalogue when they want to select good and at tractive books for their children. A PRACTICAL GRAMMAR OK THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. For the use ol Schools 01' every grade. By Thomas W Harvey, A. M. Cincinnati: Wiuon, iiiNKi.tfl. f or saw uy t ish tkk, r,vansviiie, The author of this new text book in O rammer is a practical educator, o high reputation as an instructor and lecturer. He will be remembered by our teachers and citizens as one of the instructors of the Vanderburgh Conn ty Teachers' Institute last year. To the preparation of this work Prof. Harvey has given years of study and profitted by a life-time of practical experience in the school-room. We have not given it that careful examination which would warrant us in criticising its merits. Some of the distinguishing features of the treatise are the following: The methodical arrangement and logical development of the subjects discussed; the brevity, clearness, and uniformity of the rules and definitions; the great variety of models for parsing; the abundance of appropriate exercises and illustrations; practical character and systematic classification of the instruction and exercises in false syntax. We hope to see this work successfully stand the test of just criticism, and make its way into the schools of the country as the recognized textbook. IIitrd & HononTosr. One of the most popular of the New York Publishing Houses is that of Kurd & Houghton, with which is connected the celebrated Riverside Press of II. O. Houghton & Co. There is no house in the country which surpasses it in the neatness and durability of the mechanical execution of their books, and their publications are of the higher and more useful class. We take pleasure in copying the following notiee of this house, from which some idea may be formed of the character of their publications: Hurd & Houghton's specialty is in publishing standard Belles le tires and juvenile books. Recently they have added some law books to their catalogue, and they are also known as the publishers of the popular juvenile Riverside Magazine. Four editions of " Cooper's Novels " are published by them, and it is a singular fact that during the last six. months more copies or these novels have been sold than during any period of six months for ten years. They publish four editions of " Dickens's Works." The sale of the " Globe " edition has gone up to 100,000 volumes, the " Household " 20,000, and the " Riverside," which is incomplete, has re&ched 40.000. They publish "Bacon's Works " in fifteen volumes, and will soon publish his life by Spedding, the editor of his works. The editor xias never received a 1 . 1 1 ;ufc irora nis xtiDgiisn puDiisners, 1 whose edition is verv costlv. but he
. 1 h
has received a uacdscmc sum lrom lard & Houghton, who Dubmh a neat and comparatively cheap edition. Kennaeys Works. ot which " Horse Shoe Robinson " and the " Life of Wirt " are the most popular; umes, the only revised American edition, and which sold during the ast year to the amount of o.Ouu vol umes; "Carlyle's Works," four vol umes, not very popular;.. Mon taigne s Works, four volumes, having a steady sale, are among the standard works which this house pub lish. Of Hayes's "Open Poplar Sea," 10.000 have been sold; one thousand copies were tacen oy an ngusn house. A large ana lucrative business is done by them in issuing firstclass illustrated works, such as Bry ant's " Forest Jlymn," "In the Woods," "Watts and Barbauld's Hvrans." " Smith's Bible Dictionary." revised by Prof. Hackett, the first volume of which is just out, 13 having a large sale, a fact gratifying to all who loves the Bible and desire that it should be intelligently studied. The Riverside Magazine- is monthly in creasing in popularity, on account of its excellent illustrations and great variety of topics. Watchman and Kejtector, JJoston. Political Hand-Book. Hon.
