KELiaiorj3.--TtwilI be seen by reference to our Religious Intelligence on the second page, that the new pas tor of the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church, Rev. J. P. E. Kumler, will preach hi? initiatory sermon to-raor row forenoon, and also occupy the pulpit in the evening. t Railroad Material. Among the freight by the Rob Roy, yesterday, we noticed a large amount of chairs for the Evansville, Henderson & Nashville Railroad. These, as we nresume cvervbodv knows, are used for taten'ms: the raila to the crossties. ' ' "' Xeoro PaowNEP. As the Rob Roy was on her way to this city yes tfrday, when opposite Well's, a mile above the mouth of Green River, one of her deck hands, a negro named Jacob Anderson, who was skylarking wlthsome of his fellows, suddenly lost his balance and fell backward overboard, into deep water. , The alarm was at once given, the boat backed up, and every effort possible made to Rave him, but, being unable to swim, after rising two or three times, he sank to rise no more. He resided in Covington, Ky., where he leaves a family. t Enviocs Criticism. Since the re cent change in the form of publica tion of the Daily Journal, the Courier has contained several sneers at the change, and made indefinite allu?ions, by which it would have its readers form an unjust conclusion relative to our business. The J our is now furnishing more reading m:'4'.cr, and has a larger subscription list io-day than it ever before pos sessc-d. When the Evanaville Courier will furnish its patrons one-half aa much reading matter, and attains one third the circulation of the Journal, it may, with better grace, criticise the business of its neighbors. Church Dedication. The new church edifice, built by the General Baptist Church, of Independence, of which Bev. (. Y . Moore is" pastor. will be dedicated, with appropriate ceremonies, on Sunday, July 12th, one wees irom to-morrow, vine new f hurch edifice ia a neat building, and will make a cotafortable place of worship. Rev. Thomas Strain, of i'ort Branch, will preach the dedi eatory sermon. The public is invited to attend. Reckless Driving. -We see every day evidences of the reckless, care less or malicious driving ot teams. A lew weeks ago, the inlet to the sewer at the northwest corner of Main and ater Streets was repaired, and to prevent vehicles from driving into the mouth of the inlet, a large stone was planted a foot deep, on the edge of the street, and projecting a foot or more above the ground. In a week's time that stone was knocked down by loaded drays or wagons being driven against it. Nearly a dozen other cases of a like character might be named. The city authorities ? should : set ; a watch on those thus acting, and put an end to such conduct. rat Tir . . -t - , .nit; ediucB. x esteraay.. was the mot distressingly hot day of the reason. On Friday, the 10th of June, t ho mercury, for an hour, stood at 'JO , with a close, sultry atmosphere, and for three hours it ranged above 06. But the storm that followed pro daced a great changeand the follow ing days were unseasonably cool. Yesterday was hot all day. The . mercury - was above 90 from 9 A. m. tiil long after night, perhaps till mid ught. At" 10 :a. m. it stood at 96; at 2 p. m. at 98, and at 6 p. ai. at 95. Th sky all day was almost perfectly clear, and the rays of the sun poured down almost vertically and with fierce ardor. On . the exposed side-walks the heat was nearly unendurable. Almost every one prognosticated a storm, and all implored for a rain For a while there were some BigQ30f raij, but by 8 o'clock last night the sky was almost perfectly clear, and all Jiopes of rain till after the Fourth were dissipated. If to-day is as hot as yesterday, great care will be requisite to guard against serious, if not i'atal, consequences.

The 4th OF July. This 13 the 92nd Anniversary of the ever memorable "4th of .Tnly," a synonym for the Declaration of American IndependGDC '..-' The events that gave rise to the commemoration of this day are well known .to every man, woman and child in the Union, who&e education has received the slightest attention, and we do not propose their reiteration. A number of distinct celebrations will be held in-this vicinity today. , . . .. - The great Democratic party, too national in their views to", mingle with common, patriots, will , celebrate at the Grove adjoining Blackford's. They are making earnest preparations to make a good display. .The Demo cratic Silver Band will make music. and everybody ia invited The congregation of , St. John's Church have a grand celebration at the Crescent City Springs, and have invited the Grand Army jf the Re public, the Butchers' Association, and all who do in deed, and in trftth, love the memory of the events that cluster around this day, to join with them. The Crescent City Silver Band will discourse " most eloquent muie.' The programme will be found in another column, which will, we presume, be strictly carried out. The ,,. 0 . Crescent City Springs comprises one of the most beautiful natural land Ecapes in Southern Indiana, and have been highly ornamented by the pres? ent owners at. great expense, and with great labor.1 A" visit , to the grounds alone, will more than repay the expense that will attend it. We anticipate a vast crowd at the Crescent City Springs There will be a celebration after the " good old ' style at Striogtown, where the Declaration of Independ ence will be read, and an oration will be delivered by Luke Ward, Esq. At Edmond's Grove, a beautiful locality, five miles below the city, the Sabbath Schools , of Union and Perry Townships will hold a basket picnic, have read the Declaration, to be followed by speeches, See , Sec. The steamer Romeo, Capt. Throop, will make three trips to the grove during the day, leaving at eight, ten and twelve o'clock, carrying passengers at twen ty-five cents for the round trip. The steamer Tarascon will make an excursion trip to Mount Vernon, carrying passengers at half fare. She wilt" leave her at 1 or 2 o'clock, and return about 9 o'clock P. M. She will bo provided with choice music, and at Mount Vernon will lash with the Quickstep, and return to this city in company with her. This will afford a delightful steamboat excursion of 80 miles, on one of the finest packets that visits these waters, at the trifling expense of two dollars. These several celebrations will af ford every one an opportunity to en joy the day according to his or her own choice. We wish fb alt a pleas ant, joyous time.' . ... . i Personal. Tom. Collins, editor of the Mount Vernon Democrat is in the city. He has suspended the publication of the Democrat, until after the Fourth of July. Capt. C. II. Allen, of the Terre Haute Express, arrived in the city by last night's train, to spend the 4th of July. ; Mr. Enoch, General Agent of the Automatic Washer, was a passenger by last night's train." Dr. Josh. Cobt, the venerable un cle of Captain Josh s Throop, was a passenger by the Armada last night. He comes, an unsophisticated youth from the country, to see the Fourth in the city. Horticultural Society. To-day is the regular time for the meeting of the Horticultural and Pomological Society. The occurrence of the 4th ot July, on this day, will necessitate a postponement. We suggest to the President that he call together the Executive Committee,' to take into consideration the affairs of the So ciety. Assignee's Sales in Bankrupt CY. James II. McNeely, yesterday as assignee in bankruptcy, sold the as sets or the loilowing named persons, after legal notice had been given : : The assets of W. E. Burbank, nominal value $3 10, to J ohn Schubert for 73 cents. " " . Assets of Ben. Lowenhaupt, of Mt. Vernon, nomlQal value $6 000 to John Schubert, for 7 50. The assets con sisted chiefly m s0nthem debts which are not likely ever to be paid The assets of J ohn Davis, nomina; value ttoiju, to u. n. Authes for 50 cents..., , V7., Every arrangement has been made for the picnic to be given under tt auspice of the St. John's Church, at the Crescent City" Springs, to-day and it promises to be a grand affai The Turners, the Grand Army of the Republic, and other Societies, will be in attendance, and the host of musie will be provided. The Crescent City Silver Band will be there to delight the people with excellent music, such as that band alone can produce. ," At night the grounds will be beautifully illuminated, and at 8 o'clock in the evening there will be a magnificent display of fire-works, which will be repeated at 9 o'clock. All who wish can spend the day pleasantly at that delightful place. Constitution op Mississippi We are under obligations to Mr. Luke Grant for a copy of the new Constitution of the State of Mississippi in pamphlet form. - "s. Grand Pyrotechnic Balloon Ascension. At 9 o'clock to-uight there will be a grand balloon ascension, accompanied by beautiful fireworks, eetit up from the Crescent City Springs, free of chare. .
Recorder's Court.- Although the
Recorder consummated no cases, yesterday, his court room was the scene of extraordinary excitement. Jim Sherwood, who has been an object of especial attention to the police for a week past, was released from the lock-up, on Thursday night. He went home and remained quiet until towards noon yesterday, when he managed to get drunk again, and then went to the house of his mis tress, whose furniture he broke up, and nearly broke the woman's head. The police soon had him in their clutches again. When he was taken into tha Recorder's court room, he behaved like a mad man. He clenched his fistswalked in a circle around the room like a lion about to spring upon his prey. Wrhen the Recorder ordered him to sit down, he gave the command no heed, and when the order was repeated by the Deputy Marshal, he told that official to go to h II. Joel struck at his head with his mace a stroke that would have brained him had he nt caus-ht it neon his arm. The " - blow served to stun him, and he sank into a chair. He picked up his- hat, which had been knocked off in the struggle, and put it upon his head, and when ordered to take it off by the Recorder, positively refused, when a policeman not only, knocked off his hat, but well nigh his head with it. The Recorder then imposed a fine of $5 on him for contempt of court, when he was taken back. When he shall have served out $5 worth, he will be tried on the other charges, with a fair prospect of taking a new contract on the streets for the whole Summer. Jim is evidently deter mined to conquer the city authorities who are as equally determined that he shall not. It may become a war of extermination, but it is not hard to tell who will win. Commenced.
