.JULY 4, 13SS. FASH ITEMS In. Wyoming County, N. Y., 100 acres or osier, or basket willow are in cultivation. Only four days were fit for planting in the. month of May through New FcgSind. It is expected that Louisiana will produce 100,000 hogsheads ot sugar the best sugar made in the world ?hicu is half of a full crop before the war.; '. ,Tho milking machine, so much advertised, milks a third, spills a third, and leave? a third. It is shown in the city, not in the country. " Ilighta " are tor sale. It ia astonishing how ready agricultural professors are to tell farmers what to do. Gentlemen we would hive "more faith if you yourselves .honIl show us how to do it. The Wilson strawberry ia so sue-ressiul-as to be profitable, except near small towns. Sent to the largo ci'iej, it scarcely pays expenses, and yet many are trying to produce a better berry. American wine growers complain hat European wine is preferred, and ihat it. brines a higher price. This is because' people do not know their own whisky after it ha taken a trip serosa the ocean. A butter factory 13 proposed near St. Louis, Hundreds of families are ready to contract for a fresh article at 60 cents a pound the year round. "Water and spriugs for milk-houses are abundant, and nothing is wanting but era ss.' ll"-7'i.' . -. lodsr trious men who understand fruit grwreiug can get $100 a month, but none can be hired because such vtii have land of their own. This is one of the evils of having a Republic. If we had a king men enough could be hired. Immigration from Europe to the Uitned Sutes never was eo large as now. 0'je hundred and thirty of the best steamships are running, and many o the people coming are of a high clips,'. having money, skill, and braiai. The Jicwc des Deux Monde says that thc wiue drank by the lower classes, is not wiue, but a mixture, tin basis -of which is sugary that even in France French brandy in scarcely known, and that while more than 200,0(0 ca.ka of Madeira are sold, only 1,000 are made. How a Farmer Slay Lose Money. By not taking a good home paper, Keeping no account of home operation. . ' Paying no attention to the maxim: "A stitch in time saves nine." in re gard to the owing of grain and plant ing ot seed at the proper season. Lraviog reapers, mowers, plows. cultivators, etc., uncovered irom the ram and heat ot the sun. More mouey is lost in this way than most pporle are willing to believe. Permitting broken implements to be scattered over the farm until they are irreparable. By repairing broken implements at the proper time many dollars m.iy be saved, a proof of the assertion that " time i3 money." Attending the auction sales, and purchasing all kinds of trumpery because, in the words of the vender, the articles are " very cheap." Allowing fences to remain unrepaired until strange cattle are found grazing in the meadow, the grain field, or bruising the fruit trees. Disbelieving the principle of a ro tatioa ot crops betore mating a single experiment. Planting fruit trees with the expectation ot having fruit, without giving the treea half the attention required to make theai profitable. Practicing economy by depriving stock of proper shelter during the Winter, and giving them unsound tood, such as half rotton and mouldy hnv or fodder. Keeping an innumerable tribe of r;iU on th premises, and two or three lny dog3 that eat up more in a month thau th.y are worth in a whole life Time. And lastly, he loses by not reading i a advertisements ot those who pnfron'zo the printer, they being invariably the most enternrisin - and liberal houses to deal with when he W. to town. 1 The Crops Trcm tt Cincinnati Price Current, 1st. ha weather has been warmer, and , ttf temperature up to the Hummer standard. It has been quite favorable for tho erop3, and wheat has matured rapidiy. and the growth of corn and all other field crop has been all that oould have been desired; indeed, as roiiaras the growing crops, the weath or could not have ben more favor able than it was the past week, and this gives confidence to farmers and merchants generally. All peem to undarftutd the necessity of abundant crops to the country, and therefore no rore interesting subject could be treated ot just now. Wheat has been harve:ted, pretty generally, in all the States south of the Ohio Kiver; and also, in the pomhern portion of Illinois. The yield is not very heavy, but the quality ii pretty generally highly spoken of.T In portions of Indiana ihe weevi' has been doing considerable damage, but this does not extend over a large district. The ecoaois trotn the entire Union, with ao exception here and there, as regards me crop3, are generally favorable, more geuerally so than has been the case for many years. The indications of an abundant corn crop are quite lavorable. and should this be the case, a lare increase in the pork crop may be looked lor the coming season, because tho supply ot stock nogs will bo unusually large, for not only was the Btippiy left over from last season large, farmers not having fatted them became ot tho high price of corn and x.be comparative low price of pork, , but the increase Bince then has been liberal, rj0 that the number now in the Vmern States, it will be seen, . must be unusually Urge. ;Tnr :Whkat Chop. Our information vsith regard to the whe.t rnn continues, on the full comparison of vie-s-a anu uiaicuienis ot parties Who have made careful inquiry on the lines of road centering here, ao faable. The midge has certainly attacked the wheat this year, as last in mauv districts east and north of thin and has probably done a good deal of damage on the late wheat and the smooth Mediterranean. The early ,?rheat and th bearded has not been ic-t5ted. Sample of Hungarian white wheat, ?rownhy Mr. A. H. Taylor, near Pendleton, ere exhibited on 'Change today. The beads were round, plump and very full, and counted out fiftytwo to six'y-four grains to the head, WuiS Lancaster and bearded wheat fihowo at the same time averaged only tec'y five grains. Especially is this the ense for the reason that white wheat in Central Indi ana h99 of late years given place to darker red varieties, and choice white is worth fifteen t twenty, cents more a bushel, and being soarce, is in active demand both for milling and shipment. Ind Journal 1st.- ;t x The wheat harvest is progressing briskly in this country, and . farmers will realize a much better crop than they anticipated. - The wheat 1 has ripened slowly and filled out remarkably well. Fully an average crop we are told, will be garnered. Princeton (Ind.) Clarion 2d. We are advised by intelligent and observant persons, that the crops of every character throughout pur county are unusually promising wheat andeorn especially promises an unequaled vield, facts we are glaoV to record. There was a regular dearth of business on the levee yesterday, , and the steamboatjnen, wharf boatmen and draymen, or, indeed, any other man, can see the' "fail business." of which we read....,.".. ..There , were but three arrivals up to noon, and receipts were extremely light.... A good deal ol freight was being hauled down to the Sam. Orr, giving her the prospect of a good trip out The Charmer arrived a$ 11 o'clock yesterday with her guards in the water. She had a magnificent trip, having freight at rates ranging from 25 cents to ?1 per hundred. Capt. Vandergriftand Mr. Whittaker,' her chief clerk, arranged all, her difficulties, and, hereafter, the Charmer can land here with head erect, the odium of the Chess dynasty having been wiped out From tho officers of the Tennessee, we learn that the Bichmond got off Walker's bar temporarily Wednesday' night but. grounded again , and was still aground when the Tennessee pa&.5ed that point. She had broken her nigger engine, and her crew were much exhausted in their efforts to get her aloat. One barge load of freight was taken off and landed at the foot of Hurricane Island, when the barge sunk. It was loaded with pork and j cement, the latter of which is supposed to be ruined. The Tennessee took 1,000 bushels of coal from a barge, to which the sunken freight will be transferred. They were still j engaged takicg freight off the Rich mond, the report of its having all been previously removed having been erroneous. But the prospects of her getting off were not flattering, as the river falls steadily .A steamboatnian suggests to us the following query: .If a steamboat with 700 tons on board is flying light, what could be said of one with nothing on bonrd?
