O, how foolish I have been, how absurd, and I am rightly punished; for my folly 1" - But still Ariel wept on; when a gjrl of eighteen , has built up a. glittering castle iu the air, whose foundations are laid in her own heart, she cannot see it dashed ruthlessly into ruin without a fewnatural tears. ; Meanwhile. Miss Experience Browne,, cetat, fifty well ripened Autumns,' was reading, with no little astonishment, the letter which Bridget's enemy, the" post-boy, had brought for her. "Up--on my word!" exclaimed Miss Experience. lowly and emphatically. The impertinent young fortunehuoting humbug. Does he suppose I'm a born fool, to swallow such, a pack of sentimental flattery as this? Lovely eyes dimples. '. If he'd had said spectacles and wrinkles, he d have been eonsiderably nearer right. I'll be ready for him, and I'll warrant rue he won't be in a hurry to call again." , And Miss Experience chuckled to herself until all the false curls quivered as she folded the letter neatly and put it back into it hurriedly-directed envelope. , , . Harry Grover was a little appalled at this change of horse and foot, but he stood his around manfully, not even quailiog at the big dictionary! But, Miss urowne will you hear me a moment? l don t want you to marry me ! What has put this strange fancy into your head? " You don't want to marry me? Then what in the mischief does this letter mean. I d like to know?" "Well, I never!" exolaiaaed Miss Experience as the door banged unceremoniously iu her face. i " Ariel I Miss Brown!' But Ariel -turned, haughtily from the pleading eyes of her lover. "Your letter is quite sufficient, sir; I need no further exponent of your meaning." ' - ' " " Ariel darling there has been an absurd mistake; this is the letter that was intended for you. The other was writreu to.your aunt oo business, and, by some unaccountable blunder, got into the wrong envelope! 1 have been a fool blockhead but 1 love you. dearest, with all my heart! Ariel, you will not send me away!" No Ariel did not, send him away, for the. shy smiles and rosy bloom were beginning to come back to her face, as Bhe read the real letter. "But, Harry P' she aaid, with a roguish dimple at. the corner of her mouth, " you must confess that Aunt Experience's not had rather an unpleasant style." " I was a careless reprobate," said Harry, frankly, " but you see Judse Cornell was watching me" And that was . the end of all misundestanding between Harry Grover and Ariel Browne, thenceforth, evermors. - Miss Experience was rather disappointed in two things. She would like to have sold the school house " corner lot," and she would like to bave said that once in the course of ber fifty-five years of life she had an offer of marriage. The weather took a slight change Monday night, just before midnight, when a -brisk, delightful breeze, increasing almost to a gale, sprung up, moderating the intense heat greatly, and there was every prospect of rain, but it came not, notwithstanding thick clouds gathored. Yesterday forenoon was cloudy and sultry, and & rain seemed imminent but after a mere sprinkle, the clouds sunk away to the south, and the hopes of rain grew fainter. The river during the twenty-four hours ending at 3 o'clock yesterday, had fallen thirteen inches, with eight feet on the shoalest bars to Cairo and Louitiville. 1 Arrival, ana Uepatrtnrea.
