bcnuol Examinations. Editors Journal : The public examination of the schools, just closed for the Summer, has kindled do little interest in our city. It is obvious that the standard of our schools is being elevated each year. Of the larger public schools, which have so creditabiy acquitted themselves, full notice has already been made. They do honor to this city and people. Besides thee, there are some private seminaries of learning, conducted by individuals, and dependent upon their own merit for patronage aod continuance. Not alone cheapness but intrinsic worth sustains them. Without great fidelity and sagacity, their teachers could not maintain themselves in the midst of euch excellent public institutions. Miny of our citizens prefer them for their
children. Ihry think that a smaller safety and etacieDCV j Oue of the o;ue-t and best known by the Misses C. Hooker and 11. Hough, aided by competent assistants. It was your correspondent's good fortune, with a number ot others, to be present at the closing exercises of this t-chool, - It would occupy too much of your space, to give an extended account ol the several classcxamin trioris. Where all did so well. i distinctions might seera invidious, i Uut it is due to the whole school, to ; cali attention to the thoroughness of i the instruction, as shown in the classes in arithmetic, French, phsioiogy, grammar, and auebra. come one has aid that. " writing well, like 5 peaking the trufh, is cot a natural gift, but the'result of practice." Perhaps the same might be said of. sWing icJi. I here were several thoughtful and well written essays read by the young ladies. Miss Annie Buncie received the first prize for good deportmeot aa J proSciencyin studies. Mis MolIie llagon and Faunie Armistead wete awarded books for similar: excedeucics. As a token of good use of the article, Miss Mary Walker received a fine gold pen. Ou the whole, it was very pleasaut. Here were some sixty well-trained children, whose behavior and manner showed good handling no less than their miiuh. One special feature of this examination deserves mention. It was cot all couducted by the twtchers. Several of" the visitors crop- examined the pupils. Tni showed that the answer to questions was not, what is too often theca.-e, a mere parrot exercise. It proves their acquaintance with prlac -pte. If this were often done in all our schools, we should .ee more confidence on the part of scholar, and more care to know the maton and grmind of things taught. These public examinations caunot become a fair measure of the quality and quantity ot learturg acquiri-d, but if the parents a id p.Liij wou'd more generally attend, and o- quest o -, it would. impart a spur and give more tone to pupils an 1 teueners.
