Iflwrencetiile and Olnfy The Crop Prospect Oversow of Lands J amuse to Growing Wheat Kolltleal Matters Grant ami Coirax The People Eatusi&tJt: for tlwtu. Lawrenceville, May 2(x Editors Journal : ' : - Thinking a letter from thi point Hiight be read with interest, allow me to "intrude." What the morepar ticnlarly interests the people at pres. entand that which the most interests all aside from ipeachment-I imagine, is the prospect for the crops the coming season. Along the low lands in this county, which have all been overflown, the prospect is g'oomv enough. Many fields of wheat that gave promise of abundant yield are literally ruined. I heard of one man who bad 2('0 acres of promising wheat before the flood, who, it is said, will not raise a grain, it being totally destroyed by high water. Many ethers have lost, but net so nrach. Of course, it will be late before corn can be planted on low prairie lands, but a fair season from this . out, will ensure an excellent crop of corn in all parts of the county. The farmers are exceedingly busy just now, planting corn on the higher lands, but will not be done for some time to come. Where the wheat was not injured by the overflow, it locks very fine never did it look better, I am told. Politically, this county is about equally aiviaea. Dctn parties Cia:m it now. General Legman received a handsome majority in the county when a candidate for his present position, and h to-day in Lawrence County, probably the most papular man in Illinois. So far as Republicans are concerned in Lawrence County, I am informed on the best au'hority that Trumbu:! is emphatically a "dead duck " that is if it i- bis intention to go over to tie Copperheads, or his hope to carry any na, n with iell he drew the third pert of the Etars of heaven with Liin: -but when Trumbull fell, he wett doTrt in a "gang by himself." The Uliod men were never in more earnest in all their lives than at the pre-eot time, in this part of the State. Tl ev ! are organizing and tucJciing on tLe armor for battle, and will most surely render a cood account of themBelves in Kovember next. I have talked with many, and they are all mcBt enthusiastic in their supnort of Grant and Colfax. No man could have been chosen for the Vice Presidency who would' have been more heartily endorsed than Mr. Colfax But, while Republicans are Lopeful, ! tne uemocrats are not asleep oy any means. They are busy at work, and will do all in their power to make the party successful. ' A Democratic County Convention will be held or is to be held in this place on the 30th inst., at which time it is expected that "Hon. Thomas Cobb, of yout State, will i make a speech. Ii wish he could be handed over to the .ten;tler mercies of Maj.- Robinson, of yotlr city, for an Lourr, I imagine he would 'icel the most sensibly that be was in truth a cob after that, and a cob with all the corn well taken off. , 1 1 " ' -'. Of earnest and faithful wcrk on the part of Republicans in this county, there can be no;doubt. They are full ot enthusiasm now, and cxrect bv faithful work, to carry the county for;! Urant.ana toltax. it would be a eatisfactioa to know ' tiat ia all thes counties in the "Pocket"' our people were as determined. , i s ; .; ; Oi-NEY, 111., May 27. , -JSUiLoxvJo'ttxaai: .... . There are some of the most beautiful farms along the 3;ne; of the Ov & II. Railroad, from Lawrenceville" to this place, that I have seen for a long tiraa. Almost .as far as the eye-sight whj reacn, stretcr. wiae prairies, in a high state of cultivation, while broad aeres of wbeat and corn are to be seen, field after field, " arrayed in living green," most beautiful to look opon. And on those ; well cultivated and large farms, you may nee numbers of the sons of toil busily engaged plowing or digging fold out of the earth. How successal they are is learned when harvest time comes, and the heavily laden farm wagons and the capacious barns fairly groan under the weight of the products of mother earth. The lands being higher and more rolling than in Lawrence County, the prospect for a fair crop is more flattering at present in Richland than in -Lawrence. Oiney, as most of your readers are" aware, is pleasantly located on the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad, about thirty miles west -of Vincennes. It contains a population ot about 3,000 souls, and is in quite a flourishing condition at present. It was incorporated a city about a yetr apo, and is now under city regulations and fjovertment. One. ot the finest public school houses I have seen anywhere is situated in this city. It is oapable of accommodating full six huodred pupils. It is filled with scholars all the while. The public schools in Oloey reflect great credit on the citizens, and will, of course, add greatly to the interest of the filace for such as are seeking to change ocatio-n. . The music of an excellent band attracted my attention yesterday evening, and wtcdicp my way to the Court Hcuse, I was informed that a meet-h
ing had been, called t$ ratify and endorse the nomina tions mad at Chicago, at the late-National Kepublican Convention. JThe meetine was called to order and Capt. J. R. Johnsou chosen Chairman, and Mr. A. JDariio? appointed cretary5relimiaa-, ry "steps were taken to organize a Grant Club, and resolutions adopted endorsing the nomitatioo8,after which Gen. Bowyer, editor 'of the Journal of this city was called upon and made a .forcible and "effective speech

The Central Committee is busv at work, and an organization will be effected in a few days by which a thorough canvass of all the townships in the county will be made. - It is the intention that every man shall work, and fbat faithfully and earnestly. The Republicans are enthusiastic, and will do all that can be done for the success ci the ticket. Confessing Judgment. The more candid Democrats are disposed to confess judgment on the Presidential question. In view of the unmistakable popular approval of Grant, Colfax, and the Platform, such'a disposition does them credit. Probably the fairest exponent of this sentiment is. the New York Citizen, edited by General Halpine, who holds one of the bet offices in the gift of the party. His paper, though unqualifiedly Democratic in its polities, possesses the rare virtue of saying pretty 'r.uch what the editor be lieves to be true; and on the Presisince the Chicago cent :al question, t Convention, he appears to have arrived at clear conclusions. What ' they are, can be inferred from the I following quotations from the Citizen ' of the 23d inst.: "But even the altercations and ill feelings which sprung out of the trial nave Deen aneviatea, it not aitogetner removed, by the action of the Convention in its .nominations and platform. The incorruptible Senators are not denounced and read out of the party. Wade and Vengeance is not the war-cry in the approaching battle. The very conservative element which has been scorned and ' denounced : is conciliated; and everything of an aggressive nature is avoided. The plat form is so worded that ven the D'nocrats ran scarcely take, exception to ii, and the candidates arexcmtderate that even Democrat might vote for them if it were not for the party they represent. -'- "Grant and Colfax.: make a ticket hard to beat. : Thstvonderfulmilitary success of. the one, and the great politicai ability oj the oilier, cannot -be writ' ten dnvn or belittied by newspaper editors; and the attempt to do so is a folly only worthy of the late management of thts I Democratic pdrtyi ' The uiro of DoneliOH Corinth, most wnderful of alLof Vicksburo, ind finally of Rich mond, is not a third-rate- General, and no tttcrary scribe can.m4f.fee him, om. The gentleman who has worked liis way up to the Speakership of thc llouse of Representatives is not aba 'L politician, and those who, buy'him for one will not make" a profitable bar gain. Probably there- are no two leading names ; stronger;; individually or collectively than the two which . have been put forward. . And if they do not receive the support of the people it will be from other than personal reasons . j " -The convention1 was powerful, dra-: matic , and harmonious, ; and has the prestige of success! which will Has Copperheadism ever yet defeated loyalty? Can Pendleton overcome Grant?. It has been our. boast that there were more Democratic than Republican soldiers in the ranks' of the loyal armies. ; Will these men fight one way and vote another?' Havine whipped the enemy in the field, will they vote him the victory in the council? The leaders who think so must be 'old line Whigs' those most hopeless of political drivelers. Can we go into this fight against the glories of . Vicksburg, Donelson, Appomattox Court House, and a thousand other famous -..fields, with 'peace at any price' and ' tne war a failure,' inscribed on our banners?" The Citizen expresses the sentiment of thousands of Democrats. But notwithstanding this disposition to confess judgment, we advise the Republicans to go on with the foreclosure proceedings they have instituted. Doubtless we shall have the help of thousands of Democrats; but let us go ahead as though none could be expected. Grant's tactics should be ours. He never counted on anything but opposition from the entire force of the enemy, and with him victory was certain. E (The New York Evening Mail) happened to be in the office of an 'evening cotemporary " last Saturday aoon, just after the news of the test vote' was received. An elderly fentleman,- in blue coat and bras uttocsv evidently a reader of the venerable journalcrashed into the office in a state of considerable ex-
citement: "What's the ; vote? " Nineteen to thirty-five.' : Money did it I mon did- iiU honey did IT 1 1!" Adding force to the expression with each repetition, the old gentleman dropped into a chair, wipea his forehead, set down hia gold-headed cane'vVlth uamistakable ensphasi?, and continued -his fnonologue as follows; "Money did it mon-ev

This preparation is composed entirely of vegetables, among which are Sarapaiiila. Yellow Dock, Noble Pine. Mandrake, and Hood root. When the originator lived In New Ilaui thlil re. at Ootfstown Centre, for the space of thirty or forty miles aroupjd, and lnManchester particularly, me Humor ixxv tor was well known and nighly valued for tli? numerous and wonderful cures which It effected.
